I'm not have trouble to hardening Alistair.
Even if I prefered him to choose this way by himself.....maybe he lost a bit of his innocence, but life is hard and don't make gifts, he must learn to "take the bull by the horns".
even if he don't become king, it could only be beneficial because my warden and others friends and mentors won't be always by his side.
