In other Bioware games I generally play male since the character has no voice - but Mass Effect, I just really love how well Hale delivers her lines of dialogue (Male Shep isn't bad at all.. just prefer Hale's voice a lot more)

But when hale talks to joker, there's inflection and emotion in her voice... Meer's voice for the male sheperd is very... ordinary... nothing wrong, but also seems to lack a bit of the inflection Hale has.
Here's female sheperd version: www.youtube.com/watch
Here's the scene with male Sheperd www.youtube.com/watch
Obviously some will still prefer the male version... but when I listen to both of those scenes, Hale's is delivered with discernable emotion.... at seeing joker again, the way she says they have to name the SR2.. etc.
Meer's is alright.. but it doesn't have the same pull on my emotions as hale's delivery.
All that said... Seth Green delivers his lines with mastery in every scene. Joker is an amazing character 90% due to his talent... 10% the writers

If you would begin a new game that you knew nothing about (ie, the voice-overs), would you still make the choices in gender? I had no idea of how maleShep would sound, but I still choose him, since that is my preferred role. I did make a femShep and tested her, but didn't even get to Eden Prime before I shut her down since a) it felt wrong and
But what do you say? Would you still have your prefered gender even if you did not know what s/he sound like?

Also, I agree with the Jennifer Hale fans...I watched my boyfriend playing his male Shepard, and I found his voice less emotional and entertaining. I don't say he's bad, but Hale is definitely more believable.

Indeed. I play as a FemShep because she actually sounds like a real person. With MaleShep I can't recall any line of his in either ME1 or ME2 that has any emotion in it whatsoever. Yes, I know he is a soldier so he isn't going to be getting extremely emotional, but come on. Surely there should be a bit of emotion in his lines sometimes. Even in the lines that should sound like Shep is extremely pissed he doesn't sound that angry. When I go renegade FemShep actually sounds angry, MaleShep just sounds like he is only annoyed, nothing more.

"I play as a women as I like to stare at something pretty" "I likes to stare at womenz ass, you must be GHEY to stare at men"
Now is it me but my line of sight is never that far south in the game, and the majority of the tme it is focused on enemies, the horizon etc. How hard is shooting staring at ass?
Anyway I play as males shep, don't rate Hale she's just Naomi Hunter to me. As i wouldn't say this poll is a fair demographic as it doesn't show to opinion of the casual market who buy the games just don't post about it.

Yeah, Hale is definitely Naomi Hunter... and Bastila Shan... and Ophelia... and Mazzy Fentan... and Samus Aran (though technically in grunting and all that). Even ignoring her TV roles, she's got a dozens of other roles, major or otherwise.
Never played the Meteroid games, but Metal Gear is my favourite series of all time, and her voice just will always remind me of Naomi. Its like David Hayter and Cam Clarke will always be Snake and Liquid to me.
Meers fits the role to me.

After a year, I acquired an english PC version of the game (I had a french one previously), and I replayed it. With Jennifer Hale's voice, and the ability to play a strong and powerful female character, Mass Effect, which was already great IMO, became my favorite game so far.
I was a bit disappointed to see Sheploo everywhere while waiting (eagerly) for ME2, yet I understand marketing.

I played the game from the very start with a female Shepard, as I am a woman myself. I have a play-through with a male one (ME1 and ME2) but it just feels like another testosterone-full action-game with a bald macho space marine: absolutely boring and not so inventive.
Are you saying playing a female would be more innovative? Look around, there are plenty of female action heroes out there, doing the exact same things as their male counterparts.

Not nearly as many and it's rare that you get to play a female lead who's not overly sexualized. The 'setting' is also key as it's rare to be able to play as a lead female in a military setting. There are tons of games featuring a militant male action hero, so it's refreshing to be able to play as a female in this case.
