I like Meer's Voice Acting. I tend to feel that Jennifer over-acts and puts a little too much inflection into everything, mainly things where not much is needed. I think Meer's skill as a Voice Actor is more subtle, and because of that Male-Shep seems more believable to me.
Meer's voice acting in ME1 was awful to passable, at best.
Hale voice was always good in the two games.
In ME2 Meer's voice acting showed a huge improvement, surprising me, some lines I've found better sayed in his voice than in Hale.
But this is because the downplay that Bioware did with femShep.
In general Hale's voice is still better and more plausible.
BTW, I prefer play with femShep and sometimes people forget that Hale have 10 more years of experience than Meer.
He started in 98 and she in 88.
I don't judge him too harsh because of that.

On the whole I thought Hale did the best VO, but then she tends to stand out in most games she lends voices to. Mark Meer has really improved for his part, with only a few clunkers now and then. He sounds like he's enjoying himself during some of his Renegade lines in particular.

I am curious though about the people who say they "can't relate" to a female Shepard - do they have the same problem with movies who has a female protagonist or is it just games?

Plenty of men don't understand women and there are women who don't understand men. Understanding is pretty necessary to "relate" to someone, and crucial to "empathize" with them. There are guys who won't ever play FemShep because they don't understand the female point of view. This is less of a problem with women, as women tend to be more flexible in their thinking and more sensitive to feelings. Most of the female players play female out of gender pride ("I am woman" and all that), or because of something completely subjective like voice acting.
Personally, I don't see the whole "this voice actor is so much better" thing. The voice acting is a non-issue to me, I play MaleShep because it feels more natural (me being male). Most games where there is a choice in gender I pick my own, but I usually at least try a female, and most of the time the difference isn't very pronounced. In Mass Effect, the difference is more noticable because your character is voiced and animated like a real person. Of course, being unable to relate to your character just makes it easier to do things you wouldn't normally do without feeling bad about it, like play
As for being unable to relate to the other half of the population, that's pretty much reality. Legally (here anyway) the sexes are equal, biologically, not so much. Just my take on it.

Hale should stick to softer voiced characters, where she doesnt sound like shes got a stick up her backside.

i also love they leave it open if shep is male or female in the comics too and so on...
at the end... we have to feel ok with our shep.. cause we decide for him/her... good way, bad way... realtionships... and so on...
my shep was always fem for me... but i have a renegade male shep... lolz.. but it kinda feels more like the bad brother of the true shep or so. XD
i just wish bioware would be more open in relationships in mass effect. xD

I always play maleshep ,for me it's not about relating to the opposite sex i just prefer to play maleshep because it reflects me personelly.
When i'm playing i get pretty immersed ,and having one of the male npc's constantly hit on me is just a gamekiller for me.

I don't think it has anything to do with logic. It's clearly an emotional response.

Took that right off me mouth.
Hale isn't bad. But for me it's either Bastila Shan or Mazzy Fentan.
Plus her voice acting in ME is so....uh, how was the word? It sounded so darn exaggerated and unrealistic. And acted like a typical anime dub. She sounded just fine in Mercenaries or KOTOR...
People are spitting on Mark's work, but I think that his ehm... "unique" voice acting has become sort of iconic in ME.

No. There is a noticeable difference between playing Male or FemShep. Maybe they're subtle, but I can't emotionally invest in Mass Effect with a FemShep.

Male Shepard is the main character, and the game was made for this guy. I like to play the game the way it was supposed to be played.
Female Shepard (Jenifer Hale) definitely has more experience and sounds like she knows whats going on in the environment. And who doesn't think Jane Shepard with a M920- Cain is sexy!

As for voice acting then I like how male Shepard is done. He sounds natural. I don't know why some individuals on these forums cry about Meer's acting but to me, he's OK. Men don't overreact when it comes to emotions and such, unless they're some weirdos who are unsure about their gender. I find his acting quite OK (I don't find the dialogue choices that OK as in many cases the answers or choices are pretty stupid but that's hardly a VA's problem), manly, so to say. If someone would say that he's not emotional enough (what, always cry when choice A is made or yell like maniac when choice B is made?) then I don't know what kind of men these people have met in real life. Or if they even are really men themselves in real life. To me male Shepards VA is OK. Text needs quite some work but VA is good.

I still think Hale's performance are better than Meer in both games
