Somehow I like the flow of the story better with FemShep, though I admit I have yet to take a male Shepard very far through the game. Once I beat ME2 with my 'primary' I'll start up an Adept just to explore this ridiculously huge internet sensation that is the Tali Romance, but I'm primarily a FemShep player.

It strikes me that my Fallout 3, Jade Empire, KotOR, and Dragon Age first playthroughs were with female characters as well - but Black Widow is way better than Lady Killer on purely mechanical grounds, and one of the Jade Empire models best suited my chosen name, so maybe it's not the sign of some huge psychosexual complex but more a case of modern RPGs largely treating the female protagonist with some maturity.

I play with my Shepard modelled after my own face. Since I'm a guy, it's male Shep.

Wondering if there can be an option in future ME games for Sheps who are neither male nor female, since I'm sure some ME players are like that, and would want to play it that way.

Multiple female Shepards and one male Shepard.

I don't know why people have a problem playing female characters in video games, maybe just "RPGs"? Granted, I also only play male characters in these type of games but only when they're mute since I can relate myself into him because I read all the dialogue choices in my voice.

But as Shepard is voice acted, I treat her/him like another character instead of an extension of myself. So I'm just directing their story instead of trying to fill in Shepard's shoes. By that, I felt the game/story works better with a female Shepard, I've seen too much generic male space marines in other video games anyway.A strong female lead is a refreshing experience for me.

Too bad she got downgraded in ME2 though.

I agree with the sentiment that since Shepard is voice-acted, it's his/her story, not your story. You're calling the shots but in a similar vein, we pick the general tone of his or her dialogue, and Shepard fills in the details.

I didn't get the idea to play a femshep until I read some forum posters talking about Hale's VA work - prior to that I'd gone through ME1 twice with male characters. I tried a femshep and thought a renegade female soldier was so much more interesting as a character than male space Marine...so now Sarah Shepard is my 'main' character and has gone through the series start-to-finish three times already. I have a maleshep ready and waiting for ME3 but Sarah is my personal 'canon' Shepard.

My main is also a female Shepard, but I have characters of both genders. I agree with Brotag. I also prefer a strong female lead in Mass Effect. As mentioned, it's rare in videogames to have a great female lead that's not overly sexualized, so that's a bonus for me.

Why do females seem pretty kickbutt in fiction, but in real life they generally take a backseat? Like this game for instance, you can see a female character kickbutt in games. But do you see any females in development of this game, other than voice actors?

If I remember correctly the lead gameplay designer is a woman.

ME is more akin to directing a character than being one. And I would much rather direct a great actor (Hale) than a bad one (Meer).

Just compare the opening scene of ME2. Hale sounds like a Commander taking charge of an intense situation. Meer sounds like he's performing a Ben Stein routine.

Sadly if this ME movie goes ahead (I doubt it will) there will be a Commander Shepard and Shepard will be a male thereby making that **** canon.

You remember correctly. Yay for Christina Norman!

Oh, and with that, I wholly support this movement! Thumbs up!

Both.

I find preferring one over the other is a little bizarre. I am playing both characters...I would hate to be self-loathing.

I don't like to roleplay as myself in ME or in other, more 'typical' RPGs like DA:O. I have more fun creating and acting out a character that is not me. We may share things in common, but it's not supposed to be exactly 'me'.

Still, I tend to use females as my PC since I really like the idea of a woman finally saving the day for once. I am also female, but this has less to do with it (for me) as I don't RP myself in games.

In Mass Effect, I've only used a FemShep...I started a MaleShep once and the poor guy's still stuck on Eden Prime. Actually, I may have deleted that save, so he's stuck nowhere.

It is crap like this that makes these threads full of fail.  There is no consensus on this at all.  This is your opinion and you are intentionally phrasing it in such a way to antagonize the Meer fans.  It is a troll pure and simple.

Next time you finish a game - any game - watch the credits. See how many women work on game projects. You might be suprised. I know I was. :D

I have no problem with Mark Meer's voice. It comes out a bit dull during some scenes, but most of his work sounds natural and  his Renegade is totally butt-kicking.

Also, he has became sort of iconic for the Mass Effect series thanks to both haters and fans.

Hale on the other hand is good too, loved her as Jennifer Mui, Mazzy Fentan and Bastila Shan but in ME her voice sounds too forced and exaggerated. People keep saying that there is a lot of emotion in her performance. All I can hear is devoicing the last two or three syllables and very unreal intonation. No curves characteristic for English. She sounds just fine when speaking naturally, why the "butch-woman" then? I keep cringing whenever I hear her Normandy Speech in ME1.

And no I am not a sexist, played all Tomb Raiders and did my first run in Baldur's Gate 2 as a female kensai.

So uh, yeah that was my opinion. No harm done, and hopefully, no pre-defined canon bullhonkey comes out from Bioware.

Of course it's my opinion - that's a given.  I'm not going to start every sentence with "In my opinion" or "I think".  Not only would that be tedious, but it is also the first thing you learn to eliminate for persuasive writing.

This is why I love my femSheps. It one of the few times where a woman gets to be the hero. Not like in most movies and games where women are usually reduced to the boring roles of love interests for the male heros. And  while women in movies and games can be strong fighter, smart technicians etc it's usually up to a man to save the day. FemShep provide a nice change from all this.

Since they created the game, I'm sure it's their Shepard.

Shepard actually looks and sounds "strong" Femshep's voice makes her sound like a 7 year kid using playground insults.

Interestingly Femshep seems to edge out on the polls.

I bet a lot of people who play Manshep do so because they feel it's the canon Shep, due to the box, default, and advertising. I know a lot of people who always/only play Manshep for that reason, at least.

The claims that Manshep being "primary" to appeal to a wider audience... I don't think that's true, since the fans seem to prefer Femshep. I think Bioware's marketting department has just been underestimating people.

I'm female, and when given the choice, I always play a female. In single player games, I've occasionally attempted to try out a guy, but those playthroughs never get completed, regardless of how many times I've played (and loved) the game as a female. It's just not as interesting and/or relevant to me, playing as a male when I could be playing as a female.

FemShep all the way. :)
