The 80% of people who play Maleshep as confirmed by Bioware is the reason. As for those who then say, "But I can't believe that because on the poll here it's in favour of Femshep?!" Well do you really think the millions of people who play Mass Effect are going to make their way onto the forum?

That's not how statistics work![/morbo]

Correlation does not imply causation!

You could equally well say: 80% of the people play MaleShep, because of the overrepresentation of MaleShep. D'uh.

I really have trouble understanding why all these males enjoy playing as females. It boggles the mind. Anyway this poll is extremely innacurate, as it's been confirmed that 80% of players play as proper shepard.

It boggles my mind how some people can't think outside the box.

Personally Male Vanderloo Shep and Mark Meer's voice just fits the bill so well. That's why i prefer it. The first time i played Mass Effect i had my own custom Shepard and even a Female Shepard, but i just ended up sticking with the Default original Shepard.

Those stats mean nothing because we don't know how the stats where odne. Is it first PT, multi PT, many people did not even turn the feture on, so no those stats mean nothing unless BW gives us an understanding n those stats and how they where done, until then the poll is what we go by.

I dont see why, in a game, you have to be restricted. I prefer playing as a femshep for 3 reasons.

-I like a girl who can kick ass and look good while doing so. There are few in the movies but they are awesome. Michellle rodriguez in avatar and SWAT. Jennifer Garner in the kingdom. Whoever played the shieldmaiden in LoTR. Its a breath of fresh air especially when games have so few good female leads that actually talk and you can feel part of. Femshep and Faith (Mirrors Edge) are the only ones I have met. I know there are more but still.

-I love hales voice. Its strong yet inviting. Emotional, yet cold and commanding. Her delieveries are better, for me, then Meers.

-I dont want to stare at a guys ass and face the whole game. I like the freshness of saying hey look a purdy gurl on the screen. Alright but seriously I do like it. I find her easier on the eyes and ears so I play as her.

And dont get me started on the stats. All I m going to say is look at the wording 80% played as a male shepard. Good, so did I, Im part of that 80. AFW's poll billed it at 73 pretty close. And yes we are a minority but still they take polls from select groups and it works out. Why should only people on polls want to play femshep. And dont say they go with just defaults becuase they dont know any better. I picked up ME1 a month before ME2 when I heard you could import the game. I thought I would have to play a man. When I got to the screen it says male or female. Well I picked female, and I dont see why someone else shouldnt because they dont visit the forums. :wizard:

EDIT: I am a dude

Really, I hate when people use the stats, they mean nothing. Until Bioware organizes and gives us a clearer meaning on them, the stats right now are just numbers.

So I'm just wondering if the males who only play maleShep and refuse to play femShep also are unable to enjoy movies like say Resident Evil or any movies where the hero is a badass hot female and limit themselves to Riddick type movies

I'm a heterosexual male and I almost always play a male Shepard since its a little easier for me to identify with a male protagonist; but I really enjoyed my ME1 and ME2 play through with my female infiltrator Motoko (any other Ghost in the Shell fans out there?) Shepard.

It really does give a different feel to the character and the voice actress for Shepard definitely outclasses her male counterpart. Still I had to save frequently to make sure that I didn't start hitting on Jacob by accident.

I only play Femsheps. I originally started ME1 with a male and restarted on Eden Prime because I could not get past Meer's voice acting. This was the first game I chose to play as a female where I had the choice to play as a male and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the experience. I have only played ME2 as a female and wouldn't buy ME3 if the option was removed or if Hale wasn't the voice. I know some people like Meer but I will never get it.

I'm only playing a femShep (yes, just one char).
I have played a maleShep only until the drop on Eden Prime, then switched to a femShep and have not looked back once.
Hale's VA is just a lot better, it is more convincing and more emotional than what Meer delivers (i've seen a couple of cutscenes on youtube).
I don't think they will, but if they would kick out Jen Hale as VA in ME3, I would be seriously pissed about it.

That said, I play femSheps exclusively, period

Heh. I didn't like Hale's VA. To me, it sounds like she tried too hard on most of her lines, especially the renegade lines. They often come off as a lame attempt at being tough. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Personally I prefer cunning and determined female protagonists like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley from Alien and Aliens or Linda Hamilton's Sarah Conner from Terminator 2 to female protagonists who run around kicking ass like they're Arnold Schwarzenegger with boobs.  To me super strong heroines tends to come off feeling like roles written for men since they rely on masculine brute force rather than feminine guile.   And honestly I can't help but roll my eyes a little when I see a 110 pound actress knock out a 250 pound man with a single kick or punch.

[MINOR ME2: LAIR OF THE SHADOW BROKER SPOILERS] I likewise couldn't help but roll my eyes when I watched my Female Shepard beat the **** out of a huge alien with her bare hands during Lair of the Shadow Broker. [END SPOILERS]

That said I don't mind a female protagonist with freakish strength as much when the story gives the female protagonist a justification for such power like Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell who's strength is justified since she's a cyborg or Leelo (playe by Milla Jovovich) from Fith Element who's strength is justified by the fact that she's a genetically engineered weapon who just happens to have the body of an extremely hot chick.  So I find Commander Shepard's freakish strength somewhat more believeable since she's had genetic and cybernetic upgrades.

None the less I still prefer heroines who survive through cunning and strength of will to the ones who rely on physical prowess since they're more realistic and show that a woman doesn't need to rely on an unrealistic psuedo masculine physical prowess in order to be powerful.  For example Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is a great character because she survives using cunning and bravery in situations where more physically imposing male characters drop like flies.  Likewise Linda Hamilton's depiction of Sarah Conner in Terminator 2 is also a great depiction of female strength since she relies on her wits and strength of will to get her through situations where brute force would be ineffective.

I haven't read a single post of this thread, but let me see if I can still summarize it:

*ahem*

"I like Hale, she puts actual emotion into her lines!"

"Hale sux! She sounds like a butch lesbian!"

"Sheploo is awesome because his face has higher resolution!"

"dudeShep is better because he's teh can(n)on!"

"Meer sounds deadpan, and a lot of his lines are mis-delivered."

"Hale tries way too hard to sound commanding and/or tough!"

"More males play games, so dudeShep is obviously the best choice for everyone!"

"Nu-uh!"

"Yu-huh!"

/repeat for 15 pages.

How'd I do?

In the end most players have more then one anyhow, but to be honest i like the voice actress for the FemShep the best it tends to have more range. and is somewhat enthralling

Plus hate to say it I really would rather look at a Femshep over a Maleshap.

Though going to do another playthrough of mass effect 1 and 2 again to make another Maleshap.

The "80% played as male Shepard" makes total sense. I played as a male Shepard, and so have most of the other girls I know. The fact is, a greater percentage of female players will have both male and female characters than male players (note I say PERCENTAGE, not number).

Most guys will play as m!Shep, and maybe half will also have a fem!Shep. In my experience, 3/4 girls will have both a fem!Shep and m!Shep a well. I'd like to see stats on how many people ONLY play as m!Shep, really.

Personally, I think both the voice actors have some great moments, and infinite patience for what is probably one of the most complicated recording jobs for a videogame ever. I've played as both, first as a fem!Shep, and then a renegade m!Shep--both times using the face customizer. I'm looking to make my experience of the game my OWN in a way that few games can offer. To create your own characters with their own look and personality and story is the reason why Bioware has worked so hard giving us those options.

I'll admit I identify more with the fem!Shep, being a girl, but I absolutely adore the character I've created for my badass, soulless m!Shep as well. I don't necessarily feel one is more "canon" than the other. Fem!Shep is perhaps a little more kick-ass, if only because the "save the universe" story is so different and surprising with a female lead.

I do hope, at least for Mass Effect 3, that perhaps they put out two different covers for the special edition or something--one m!Shep, one fem!Shep. Fem!Shep is really important to some of us, and it would be a nice nod to those fans, maybe.

Another Femshep only, single character. I generally play as women in RPG's if i have the choice as you always can get more interesting reactions from characters. Again I prefer Femsheps voice reminds me a bit of Starbuck from the new BSG(helped by EDI being 6 BSG)

just to add male and hetrosexual

Does your gender and sexpref really matter, its a roleplay game just dont pay attention to the folks who think it matters.
