Women don't seem to be as insecure as some men when it comes to playing as the opposite gender.
This is true. I play plenty of dudes in games and I'm not afraid of losing estrogen over it.

What? The rage is female protagonists now. Jojovavich (sp?), Jolie, the hot chick from all the underworld movies, are all lead protagonists in impossibly physical leading roles. Sick of male protagonists? Sheesh.
The audience (guys mostly) want to see T-n-A or macho men that they can imagine as themselves (Bourne).
Fact: action movies (and games) are male-focused and male predominant. ALways has been this way. You want to find where the girls are in computer "games"? Go to Secondlife or those virtual family games where the object is to (holy ****e) MOW THE LAWN, do dishes, date, go out dancing, etc, THAT is where you find the ladies. This being the case, that guys are the predominant audience, they are catered to. THAT is why when female lead roles in action movies or games are created, they are superbabes with perfect ta-tas, tight butt, narrow waist, etc. Eye candy. WHen the lead is male, it is intended to give the guys a tough alterego. There is no appreciable female audience (there are some, sure, but they are heavily outnumbered by the guys).
I still say that femshep is fine in this game but...just as the game changes subtley depending on whether you are a paragon or renegade (or mix) player, just as it alters ever so subtley depending on previous game decisions, the game should also be slightly different for femsheps vs malesheps. A "real" femshep is NOT going to be macho, strong, physical, the way a "real" maleshep would be. Their approaches, their means of getting their way, would be different and both enhanced and limited by their inherent physical limitations.
The game would be more interesting and realistic with slightly different outcomes and actions depending on whether fem or male is the shep.
Kindly grow up. There are many women on this board who does not fit your description of a female gamer, I would be careful how you choose to describe us. Your view of things is so narrow I'd ask that you get out more, the type of women you say doesn't exist are everywhere all the time, but they don't usually waste their time pointing this to men such as yourself.
I'm taking the time to answer because people like you are the reason I've been called names and judged for being too strong, too forward and not behaving as a 'girl' should.
Or we can forget trends and just be ourselves, supporting games like this and the possibility of both genders occupying the same role does a lot to kill stereotypes and the pressure of fitting in to any mold. Whether something is realistic or not is only limited by imagination, if someone can imagine creating weapons and armor both sturdy and light enough to be worn and used by anyone why shouldn't it be in a fake universe in the future? I'd have no doubt that if we ever get as advanced as the ME world is, such discussions as these will be completely useless and nonexistent.
I support fem Shep.

As a guy, I have 4 femsheps and 2 malesheps. I prefer the female hero when given the choice but playing maleshep is fun too.

People play the gender they do for a reason. Each person has the right to play whatever gender they wish and have an opinion. I like playing as a female, myself but play many games as a male.
Shepard is not a male nor a female. It sounds weird, yes, but it's true. Shepard can be either gender. I have guys friends that play as females and girl friends that play as males.
Maybe the reason you play male/female is the VA or the view or, hell, maybe it's the gender you are/aren't.
I'd like to know why people have to argue about it so much. You have the right to think what you wish.
Just my 2 cents, though. Honestly, I support FemShep. But MaleShep is fine too. It's just prefrence. I agree with Ryn, this thread should have stayed buried.

or better yet...
leave it out altogether.
The men could do with a bit of P&Q once in a while, instead of getting it in the ear nonstop.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with ManShep. I just have a harder time making him look good.

When he tells "Liara, go. Now" it actually sounded like a plea for his lover to get to safety. When my female character said the same thing, she just barked it like an order.
I don't necessarily think that either performance is any better than the other, but they both definitely bring their own thing to the table. I just happen to like Meer better. It has nothing to do with insecurity... that whole idea is just as ridiculous as the notion that there is something wrong with guys that prefer to play as a female.

Besides, women play as male characters all the time, given that most games only allow you to play as a male character....not much of a choice there, and most females don't have much of a problem with it. Women don't seem to be as insecure as some men when it comes to playing as the opposite gender.
I don't mind playing female characters. However, I like to coordinate my characters personalities with their characteristics. In example, my brute force soldier is typically male. However, my biotics character is usually female, unless I'm doing a renegade playthrough, in which case I feel compelled to make the biotics user look as close to Kane from C&C as possible. However, Mass Effect is a franchise where the first time through, when I get most immersed into the plot, I'm going to play as a guy. This is a game where relationships between characters are significant, and noticably impacted by gender. As such, I'd like to see the unfolding of the storyline from a guy's perspective the first time through.

Agree 100%
The main reason I play as male is because I'm male and I like Meer's voice-acting better. I've played both games as female, and I just didn't like it. Primarily because FemShep doesn't sound how I would like. It just doesn't flow very well most of the time. In games that aren't fully voiced, I have no problem playing as female because I can imagine how they sound, or pick a combat voice, or whatever. I can play female characters in Dragon Age with no problem at all, but it cracks my immersion ever so slightly in Mass Effect. Nothing wrong with liking FemShep, I just prefer male.
