Might as well post the poll in this thread too. http://social.biowar...294/polls/2871/

Considering what a lot of people say about FemShep that poll and the one in the OP go hand in hand. :P

sorry, an immature response to an immature comment. unfortunately i'm not above dropping down to my instigator's level of maturity when provoked. my intent otherwise is to get a general consensus (insert Legion reference here) as to why so many guys (the majority, according to the poll) like to play femshep

True to a point, but a lot of things (not just in games) are done purely on a whim or because people like doing them for no reason in particular.  Now, there may be underlying psycho/neurological reasons for these things, but that is not the same as them all being matters of rational deliberation, which is what you seem to be looking for.  Fact is, you're just not going to find some unifying explanation for why some males play female RPG characters.  Take me:  I played ME1 as MShep first.  Months later, I decided to replay, and purely on a whim, to replay as FemShep.    I discovered I liked Hale far better as a performer, and never went back.  But there was nothing in particular motivating the intitial decision.  I just gave it a shot for the hell of it.

so you went for a change of pace and stayed for the voice acting. would you mind describing what about Hale's VA you liked? i personally found femshep's voice somewhat grinding and disinterested. all i've heard others say about her is "She's way better than Meer," with no details on what they like about her

Cool. It's matter of preference I think. It seems most guys in here give roughly the same reasons. Read the poll comments too. You might not agree, but for them those seem to be reasons enough. I don't think it has much to do with one's sexual orientation. Depending on the reasearch only 6 to 10% of the population is non-hetero. That number doesn't match the poll results. I know... There aren't enough respondents for the votes to be significant, not scientific, etc. At least it gives a rough indication. Maybe enough for BioWare to start a proper survey to see if FemShep needs some extra loving from the devs. ;)

Meer to me sounds grinding and disinterested, though not so much in ME2.  Problem is for me, in ME2 he seems to now be in hurry to finish his lines far too often.  The prime example for me would be when he does the "Getting hammered on the Citadel Scene."  It's actually a place where I think Hale overdoes it a bit, but Meer just flat out fails...hard. It's probably his worst in ME2, but it's not the only time that all I hear is some dude in studio instead of a character (he also has a nasal thing going on which can get on my nerves at times, but that's not really an acting thing, so I don't really count it).  In general, Hale to my ear puts more emotion into her readings overall, and in appropriate amounts, and has a lot more variation in her speech patterns; like where she will place the emphasis in a given line for example.  Yes, sometime less is more, and there are a number of cases where I actually prefer Meer's deadpan line readings, but a lot of the time I have to wonder why MShep sounds like he's just taken cough syrup even though it's a highly stressful and emotional situation (and maybe a little too much syrup at that), whereas with Hale behind the mic, Shepard actually seems to have some life in her, even if I hate the odd line or two every now and again.

wow the results of the pole are surprising. I played both, my original import was male, but I think I enjoyed playing as female more. Maybe because I wore mirandas costume and got to stare at that ass all game ^_^.   VA is better too.    Shame about the lack of a Tali romance ;_;.

JACOB IS HAWT THOUGH.   NO ****** :D

I guess my femshep is bi, but it feels so wierd having a female lesbian be the savior of the galaxy.   Just...idk....awkward.

As a male I find some of the LI diologue a bit creepy when playing femshep but as long as I can put an end to the romance option its not a problem.Asari or celibacy as femshep is my motto.maybe Kelly if she wants to play

Yeah.  For example, I just pretend FemShep is being a jerk and messing with Jacob a little because all that saluting annoys her.

Another thing, some of my character concepts 'want to be' female. If there were dual pistols I'd probably give that to a girl Shepard, Finesse is feminine in my mind.

Some guys like to play females because it gives them something nice to look at.

You can have multiple female teammates to look at. I wonder what the real reason is.. telling a woman what to do?

My testosterone levels are way too high to play a Femshep anyway. B)

Mlow44,Its just that some people don't feel like they are "pretending"to be their characters. If i play a male character in Baldur's Gate and nail Jaheira for example,i don't feel like i actually nailed her,i feel that my character did.Its like watching a movie where i have a more close conection to the character because i help him in his quest, its not that i feel i AM my character.

So when i choose a female character in any game its for me,the same deal as playing a male character.
This for many i believe is the main reason.

A secondary reason is aesthetics.
For example.I play WoW.The male models in that game are horrible.just...horrible..they look like they are on ultra steroids or something,i really wanted to create a male orc warrior..but he looked so horrible i chose the leaner and more realistic orc female..

Those are the 2 main reasons,i hope you understand better now, cheers:)

EDIT:Oh and btw,i played countless games and used male characters just as much as i used female ones. That doesn't make me bisexual, does it?:P

I prefer male shepard btw.

I'm not sure if the poll is showing the actual market (yet). I was surprised nevertheless about how popular femShep is.

I play femShep too. I have actually not really found out yet why i always prefer the female option if there is any.
For one, I just can't stand the stereotypical "guy" that saves the world. It's annoying and boring in my eyes, to have this characterless stereotypes in every friggin action game.
Secondly I like the combination of girls and big guns (or swords, depending on the setting). It's cute and funny. Well, femShep is an exception because she's portrayed as actually capable of handling the weapons she's given. But she's still feminine enough to count.
Thirdly I like running around as a girl. Can't say why's that. It's somehow interesting to be able to act as the opposite gender, dunno. I don't have that urge in RL, though. Just in games  I guess i don't feel like I'm that person in the game, either. I just assume this role of someone, my avatar.

I'm a female gamer who's tried FemShep, but I play predominantly MaleShep. Not quite sure why, though I vaguely remember some bad experiences with rendered female characters from some of the earlier games I played; they were pretty clearly not meant to be taken seriously. I just got into the habit of using the male character options. ME1 did pretty well in rendering a reasonable female model, I think, and I'm tempted to go back and play another FemShep.

ME2 didn't help matters, though. The dialogue might be the same, and I think Hale's got a bit of an edge on Meer (though I find his deadpan delivery amusing most of the time), but the models move exactly the same and on the female it just looks...wrong. Like she's got something uncomfortable in her pants. And, well, the less said about the contagious male Con Shuffle 'dancing,' the better.

It would be interesting to hear from BioWare, if the used the same animation to cut costs or because they thought it would look better if the girl doesn't look too feminine, being a veteran soldier and all that.
But i guess they wouldn't admit the first option even if it were true :P

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a side-effect of a shorter development cycle - get busy with other stuff, and never quite get around to altering how the base animation looks with the female skin. They might have forgotten, or figured people wouldn't notice. I do hope they fix it, though. It's a little distracting.

And dammit, Bioware, would it kill you to let MaleShep dance well, or at least look like he's enjoying himself?

Female Shep of course.

I for myself am a female and I find it somewhat "awkward" to play as a male. It's stupid but this is how it is with me.

So far it's been exactly 50/50 (four playthroughs of ME, two of ME2). I prefer Hale's voice work, though (however, in fairness to Meer, I feel he has improved quite a bit for ME2).

Both M and FemShep got shafted on the dancing this time, what with them both acting like a kid at a school dance for the first time with no clue what to do beyond some halfhearted twitching and a bit of head-nodding to the beat.  Sure, MShep's not as silly now, but also lacks the sheer ridiculous charm of his admittedly sad ME1 moves, and FemShep wasn't actually half-bad pre-death.  Just like old times, my ass.
