With the label "minority" I signed the voters of a forum poll in the pool of all the ME-ME2 players :)

Like the term "non-representative".

Personally I do play femshep and on the net see her popularity. But I learned that an internet community is always just a small part of the whole (like 2million copies sold in the first week, and how many registered and voted here?).

I've seen what kind of males play female characters in games like Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Fallout 3. Nude mods, xXx animation changers... Instead of doing quests they spend their time skinny dipping their naked female character in lake rumare. Sad!

You know, this is the absolute truth man..

I remember back in the NWN days, there were entire servers and modules dedicated to trashy pseudo porn, complete with BDSM, lesbian and God knows how many other categories relating to sex..

I remember wondering whether these guys had any shame, but I guess they didn't..

Funnily enough, Dragon Age Origins attracts the same type of male player judging by some of the mods floating around..  If Dragon Age allowed online play, I have no doubt it would scrape the very bottom of the barrel and make what I saw with NWN look like an episode of Dora the Explorer because Dragon Age is even more flexible in the modding department..

Bioware was wise not to allow casual modding in ME/ME2, otherwise you'd see FemShep saving the Universe in a crotchless bikini armor complete with nipple rings Image IPB

Although the forum goers are the Minority. The main thing is, 'we' are the people who come onto the forums to give our opinions. We are the ones dedicated enough to make our voices heard -to an extent of course- and noticed.

If the players who disagree aren't around to say so then their opinions should not be held higher than ours.
I am not saying that only we should be heard and only we get to decide what goes into a game.

But if Bioware wants actual feedback then there is no challenge in sending out a mandatory poll to players across the world. Players are not going to be upset that they had to not play for another 5+ minutes to answer a few questions to make the game they love better. Bioware shouldn't be scared to make the polls (used for future development) mandatory and unavoidable. Just don't do them too often.

Also, this forum asks the question 'Which gender Shepard do you like and why?' not makes the demand. 'Mock other peoples reasonings and complain about them'
Grow up every one of you that has claimed people who play opposite genders are perverted or 'not right in the head' It's just sad.
I haven't seen any men complaining about the fact that some women play male characters. Oh no because that's perfectly natural for women to want to be big strong men isn't it? You don't have to like me or any other guy playing a woman. You can't stop us and you can't make us feel ashamed for it. We bought a game and want to play it how we see fit.

im a guy and i always play a female character in games where i get a choice because you almost never get to play a female in games where you dont get a choice and also because in mass effect i really hate the male voice actors voice.
and i definatly dont want to be a girl or anything like that.

MaleShep. It something I started way back in NHL98. I would always try to put myself in the game (to fullfill some failed sports star dreams, or what ever helps the trolls sleep at night). And I've done so ever since whenever the oppertunity allows, no matter the genre/franchise. From games like the NHL franchise & Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (which allowed me to photo myself and slap it on the head of Bishop for the win) to ME 1 & 2, I've always tried to model the face as close to me as possible. Sometimes I get very close, sometimes I'm just off the mark & sometimes I miss it completely and look nothing like my avatar. But that's just me.

And I kinda resemble my forums avatar... Kinda... If you're drunk and squint real hard.

I'm not a voice acting snob, so the MaleSheps voice does the job fine for me.

I also have a FemShep in ME 1 just for ****'s and gigles. I think she's bipolar.

Lets not forget you have romances in this game so if you're a straight male you might not want to be fep shep and romance a guy..

this, too. felt weird in Dragon Age: Origins trying to get the achievements for Alistair and Zevran's romance plots...

Doesn't bother me and I am a male. I know its a game, the one thing I cant do is make a male character and make a gay romance. It just feels wrong. Yet I can make a female character and romance a male npc ok. Guess thats what you call roleplaying.

I played as a MaleShep for the first playthroughs of ME1. Then I tried out a FemShep and just ended up liking the voice a lot more, so I stuck with it. I've yet to finish ME2 with a MaleShep whereas I've done three playthroughs with a FemShep.

Well, I have two major characters. My primary is a male, and my secondary is a female. Image IPBImage IPB

EDIT: I'm a guy, if that says anything.

FemShep. I like Hale's Voice much more than Meer's. Its simple preference. Of course looking at a Girl is also a nice bonus for some, not all, but for some. Or the Idea of not just playing the generic Hero on the white Horse thing, but a big **** who still saves Galaxies and eats Men's Hearts for Breakfast..or something. Everyone has a Reason for it, even if its a shallow one. I enjoy playing FemShep, it just feels a bit different than the "Guy goes to save the Galaxy" thing, i mean why cant a Woman do the Job for once? Also i found that in terms of Character Creation or Customization, the Male Shep has several rather weird and not very nice looking parts, for example the Eyes, or the Nose. Another reason why i do prefer FemShep.

Generally i dont give a damn about it though, i just play FemShep and thats fine enough for me. Im also playing a MaleShep through ME1 and 2 simply because of the Miranda Romance, because i want to use that one to see how it actually effects ME3 once that comes out :)

I'm fairly certain most people do. I'd actually bet my own life that there are more male shepards than female. This is why polls, especially forum polls, are meaningless. Typically the underdogs come out in the greatest numbers because the majority are comfortable enough in their majority to not care about polls. And then there is, of course, the fact that forumites are a very small percentage of the actual fanbase.

Certainly.  200 votes from thousands of gamers certainly isnt a valued sample of the population.    The average gamer will choose male over female.   It would be interesting to know what those figures are, but I doubt Bioware will give those details out of course.

Still dont underestimate the weight femshep has.   Since the last time I posted in this thread I have  started my fourth character.  Yep still femshep.   I think I will do my renegade VanderlooShep next though, just to mix it up.    Then I will be right back to femshep again.

Still I accept I am in a minority with femshep, but I think the minority is larger then most expect.  To the degree where femshep deserves more then she is getting.

I don't think Bioware wants to confuse people by having two spokesmodels and with a majority male customer base the choice seems logical. They would have to advertise the character creator in their trailers and given the cost of advertising they just stuck to the male persona. They can get more of their message across focusing solely on the game and with half the work. And producing two CG trailers is a waste of money.

On the otherhand I found the marketing for ME2, as far as televsion advertisement, lame. At least in my area. That claymation looking CG fight for the lost interview stuff didn't really show the actual game. The actual ME2 trailer I saw on Youtube would have been much better and they could throw in a "create your own persona" line in a show a couple seconds of character creation. Two commercials with ingame content, one male and one female. I hate when a game advertises itself with CG. I don't care about CG trailers. Same goes for Dragon age. A CG trailers doesn't show me anything. If not for the internet I would never have bought Dragon Age or Mass Effect. And they might just pick up a few more female players if they had alternate advertisement. Resident Evil: CV and 3, Tomb Raider, etc. have female leads. I don't think guys are going to blow a game off because it's possible to be female.

Femshep for both ME and ME2. I tried to play maleshep to get the romance achievement but never finished the game with him.

It's nice to be a woman and be able to play a female character in a game.

I'm not really a marketing person but from what i understand is that marketing is not about information (about gameplay or possible customization) but about creating a good feeling and hyping by a small adrenaline rush. The total lack of cognitive content lets the audience forget about the product immediately but they will remember next time, subconsciously maybe, when they stand in from of the shelve with several games that all look similar. so, the good feeling and small adrenaline rush might be the nudge that makes them think that bying this particular game rather than the competitor is a good idea.
CG trailers are much better in building up emotions than ingame trialers. But they are targeted at people that don't really care about the game.

Ingame trailer are more for actual information and more suited for homepages and presentation at e3 (or similar events) where people go that actually know about the game and want to learn more.

So, it's just different stuff, basically.

For the CG trailer, maleShep, of course.

For the ingame-footage, femShep and maleShep ^_^

Male always, I don't care if the Voice Acting is great, and he is definitley not Monotone, your just getting that impression from the first game.  Meer has gotten much better with the voice acting.  and if you customize your avatar right, a Male character can be pleasant to look at as well.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    http://i48.tinypic.c...363vn.jpg       Take a look at that pic all you female shepards.

I've tried to play a FemShep multiple times but I just can't get into it. When I play an RPG, I try to put myself into the game to help me relate with my character better, and I have a hard time doing that with a female character for some reason. I'm probably stuck in the cliche'd way of thought but the idea of a galaxy saving heroine just doesn't work with me. Personal preference, no offense intended. I usually play as the Default MaleShep (since I can't create a character worth crap) and I always enjoy it from beginning to end. Female characters, not so much, even though it's much easier to make a good looking FemShep.

On another note, I don't mind Jennifer Hale's voice acting but I really don't see what the big deal about it is. She sounds so bored most of the time, and while it may get better later on I never last long enough to see it. It's one of the main things that turns me away from a FemShep to be honest -- she just sounds so disinterested when reading the lines that I've heard.

Mark Meer isn't the greatest voice actor ever but at least he doesn't sound like he's running out of breath when reading half of his lines. He's greatly improved since Mass Effect 1, and that's only helped the immersion factor in the sequel. He has a few places where his performance was a little weak, but for the most part it was very believable. I didn't like how he said "ween" instead of "win" in one of the speeches, though.

Again, this is from a small sample size since I've only played a FemShep for relatively short periods of time (became a Spectre in ME1 and recruited Mordin in ME2). Still, what I've seen makes me unable get into a FemShep at all. I can't seem to relate.

Yeah I recognise the marketing strategy for ME, read my post on page 5 and it sums it up well and your point basically goes back to the one I was making also.   That a little bit more on femshep would be nice especially for those players who Shepard is female.
