It's strange to me how many male gamers play with female toons.
I myself like to identifie with a character, so playin' a FemShep is out of the question...

So does this imply most of male gamers would like to be women for some reason? :)

Atleast in my case, no. I rather like being  a man :)

I prefer female characters for aesthetic reasons, as a man i find the female form and sound more pleasing. The "immersion" argument is lost on me, i never play "as" the character, but "with" the character. Frankly i find playing as "myself" more awkward than playing with a female character.

Those aesthetic reason are also why i prefer a Dragunov as my sniper rifle and a SU-37 as my fighter jet :D

Identifying with a character and wanting to become that character are two different things. The people who play RPGs for the second reason tend to have this view that its weird for a male player to play a female character, because they apply their approach to RPGs to everyone. Speaking for myself, however, making an RPG character is not about creating an alternate self, it's simply about creating an interesting character and developing their story. Playing FemShep is thus no more "out of the question" than watching Aliens and thinking Ripley kicks ass.

Absolutely bob on. I like girls with guns and swords and stuff in movies and so don't see the the difference at all. My list of fave female characters is a long one....I would start with Trinity..etc etc. ME and DA gives me the ability to create my own - why wouldn't I want to do that?

I think it's also important which view you have: First person feels more like it is me. Third person is more like controlling another character.

Yes, exactly. I think you have identified the heart of the matter here.

When I play COD, MW2, Flashpoint - it is me. Not wanting to start a 'what is an RPG?' argument, I can find the feeling of immersion very deep in those games - even though these games are not perceived to be RPGs in the traditional sense.

One of my favourite games is Rainbow 6 Vegas 1/2. Not only was the combat very visceral, but it also had a rather good character creator for its time. Story wasn't all that bad either. The perspective is 3rd person and so I absolutely made a female character. I didn't perceive this lass to be me, but someone I had created - when playing, her personality emerged by her actions. This experience of watching a character emerge and grow is much deeper in ME and deeper still in DAO.

I like Oblivion's feature which allows you to zoom from third person to first person and back by using the mouse wheel. I wish more games had something like that. Not only RPG, but shooters as well.

I played both. Male and female Sheppard and I must say that I liked them both. Here is my oppinion on those 2:

-John Sheppard is the perfect renegade.

-Jane Sheppard is the perfect paragon.

This is what I would recommend to the new Mass Effect Fans!

just my 2 credits and greetings from good old Germany.

I haven't played Oblivion. I was hovering over buying it this week, but put an order in for The Witcher instead as I was quite excited by the The Witcher 2 trailer.

<--- The Witcher fan. ;)

The game is not bad at all. Obviously RPG based. Cool non-linear story. Decisions can bite you in the back later on. Hehe. Multiple endings. The Witcher 2 should be much better.

I can't wait until 2011. That game looks sweet. ;)

Oops... Back on topic...

And no sex change in TW2. ;)

I have to admit I am quite excited about the Witcher. I have read about its issues, so am already prepped to deal with them. TW2 looks frankly awesome. I have already checked the mods for TW1 and, yes, you can play a female character!

Hehe, yeah I know. I would certainly not mod him into a female on the first playthrough! Actually, the mod replaces him with a female character with a different name. I cant, off the top of my head, remember her name, but she is one of the characters within the game.

I played a male shep mostly, but have played through as a female. I didn't indulge in any of the romances as a female though since that would have been a bit weird. (And anyway, the romances are so badly done that I wouldn't want to anyway.)

I am not a fan of the current romances myself. I didn't like how the Jacob romance was handled. It felt like the only discussion topic. It's great to have romances included, but I will alo love to see topics that allow me to get to know a team member as a friend.

Female shepard for me. I'm a guy and I got a habit of making female characters. Don't want to look at a guys back/ass for to many hours makes me feel strange...I did make a male shepard just to romance Tali....but that was like the 5th play-through I believe.

I play either, but for ME I focus mostly on male, more because I try to related to this character, where as in a D&D or Oblivion game I dont have a preference.

Well, alle the discussions about fem/male comes down to ones perspective. I find it more apropriate to play a male character, as I identyfie with the decisions - if the decisions I make are in tune with me it means the character has to be. Then again maybe its the narrow pov of me being a man and not being able to "play" female role/character as I fail at playing with the character in rpgs...fps, or shooters/action games in general I dont have this kind of problem...its all down to specific genre: rpg. I was playing pnp rpg most of my life(more than half now :P ) and I belive this greatly influences my perspective.

BTW making a (female) toon just to look at its ass coz I play and run with it most of the game - that kind of argument I always find lame ;)

On my own time I play as a Male Shepard because I feel that I can connect with my character more closely. I do play as a Female Shepard as well however, because my Girlfriend loves Mass Effect but the Combat just isn't for her gaming playstyle. This way I can experience the voice acting of both Mark and Jennifer, just to compare. Either way, I have no problems playing a either a male or female character in any game.

Do have a voice acting preference now that you've heard both?

First some development psychology: One of the first things we learn in life is that we have a gender - that we are different/or alike to mum or dad. and it is fundamental to our self-identification. Later, we add other things to our self-image or identification (nationality, sexuality, class, etc), but our gender is fundamental.

That means that in a role-playing game where we can choose gender, we can choose to break out of these boundaries. An actor will in 99.99% of the time be limited to his/hers gender's role availability, but a role-player will not have that. We can be experimental and see how it would be to be the must fundamentally different from our own self, a different gender.

I guess I'm a little too old and a little too conservative to play anything but a straight male since that is what I am, but I can play games with female leads if there are no male options, like Tomb Raider. The immersion in the role is however greater in a male protagonist. That said, I don't mind people breaking out of the barriers for whatever reason they may have - its just that I can not do that.

I'm not 100% sure yet, as we're still playing through her Kelly Shepard. But so far I feel that the dynamic voice acting role has been reversed from ME to ME2. In ME, I felt Jennifer was more dynamic than Mark, but in ME2 I feel that Mark has become more dynamic than Jennifer.

Just my opinion though, no need to go spreading it around or anything. (Heh, Joker.)
