When I arrived in Lothering, during one of my runthroughs, I attempted to get STEN from his cell.

After repeated attempts to convince the priestest to allow the Qunari go free in my custody, even after paying that Judas harlot her 30 silver tithe, she still refused to release him.

I then told her I could invoke the right of conscription and take him and what does she do?  SHE REFUSES!!

WTF??

Huh??

From lowley commoner to prince, I HAVE THE RIGHT TO INVOKE CONSCRIPTION!!

So what the heck??  How is it she can refuse?
Chantry or not, she does not have the power to stop me.

So, my question is:  WHY didn't Bioware include conscription as an option for getting Sten?

Yes, I'm aware it's super easy to get him with Leilana in the party, but this was on my first play through, and knew 'right of conscription' was a powerful tool.  (My city elf had been saved by it in another game.)
Imagine my surprise the first time I tried to use it....    and got shut down by some crotchety old hag who just bilked me for 30 silver....

Incidentally - I haven't taken this route yet, but is threatening her a good idea??  Do I get to fight everyone in the temple?

Yeah, I tried using the Right of Conscription my very first play through to get Sten, and she refused me. Intimidating her is fine, as far as I remember. She'll give you the key and you don't have to fight anyone.

It was worth it.

My Dalish Elf has a personal grudge against the Chantry, with good reason, so it wasn't uncharacteristic to threaten her when she rejected my proposal.

While I did take a hit from Alister, Morrigan was pleased as punch, and allowed me to get my 'accolade' from her.

Or you could just take Leliana along--the Revered Mother gives in right away if she's in the party.

Because she would rather die herself than have other people die because of her, plain and simple. Sten was kept in that cage for good reason.
Anyone can refuse the Right of Conscription, they just have to be ready for the consequences.

Invoking the Right of Conscription is to recruit someone to become a Grey Warden, way different than to simply recruit someone as a companion or placing someone under your watch.

2 simple way of getting Sten out is just to have Leliana in your party when meeting the Reverend Mother or just lockpick the cage.

That doesn't change the fact that she'd rather die than have other people's blood in her hands, does it? In case you didn't notice, the Chantry is similar to a religion. Religions have these people called "martyrs".

Gee, I thought all you had to do was bring Leliana & hit will you reconsider...... dialogue option. Always works for me, & no hit on Approval rating from anyone.

Just remove Allistair from your party in Lothering before entering the chantry to avoid the hit from the intimidate.

Oh and I suspect because the Mother Superior doesn't wish to be seen helping a Grey Warden due to Loghain and the outlaw of Grey Wardens during his time as regent she feels very capable of saying no to the Right of Conscription.

Since you resorted to violence and aggression, how can she even place a 'murderer' under your watch? Maybe it does have something to do with religion, but she has every right to deny your demand. Except if you did invoke the Right of Conscription to make Sten a Grey Warden, then she has no rights to stop you. But 'abusing' the Right of Conscription, does make her think less of you. A couple of nice words and gestures would do the trick most of the time.

So bringing religion into the whole thing doesn't really add any perspective.

Edit: Oh and whodawhanow do have a point. The Grey Wardens are still rebuilding their place within Fereldens, and Maric did re-establish the Rights of the Grey Wardens just recently. When Loghain declared the Grey Wardens as traitors it effectively remove the obligations to their rights. So the Mother have legitimate reasons to refuse the Rights of Conscriptions.

I used the right of conscription option a while back and I thought it worked? If memory serves, the revered Mother says something like the right of conscription probably has no hold on the quanari people, but these are dire times and if the gray wardens could use him then so be it. Could it instead be an issue with low coercion/cunning?

Yes Cazlee, coercion/cunning/strength does affect convo-checks. I succeeded in intimidating the Mother once, but have yet to try invoking Right of Conscription.

If you give 30 silver to the Chantry when you first talk to her, she will agree to release Sten into your "custody" if you tell her you're a Warden (although you still need some persuasive talent).

(My chantry-hating Dalish of course never give anything and just pick the lock after the Revered Mother/Chantry hag refuses to give up the key.)

If I'm a human, I'll be as diplomatic as possible in such conversations, but if I'm elves or dwarves I usually take the 'alternate' route hehe just love RPing

Hmmm, because the right of conscription isn't worth a copper coin with all gray wardens being outlawed and defamed by loghain?

Actually if you have 2 points in persuasion she'll give you the key to the cage but she also comments about the gray wardens being outlawed .

Do you ever find out why Sten killed the family to begin with...I'd like to know...

It's a plotline for Sten. Get his approval up via gifts to unlock the dialogue. It ties into his personal quest.

Let me explain:
I ran 4 different character Origins, taking them all the way to Lothering, where I finally decided 'who' I was going to 'finish' the game with first.
1st guy - 1 point in coercion, managed to convince release of Sten.
2nd - no coercion skill, nothing I said or did changed the outcome. Completed all the Chantry quests, help everyone in the village, and gave the 30 silver tithe, and she STILL would not let me take Sten.
3rd - figured out having Lel in party is 'auto success'.
4th - just used Lel again.
5th - ditched Lel to get the 'stabbity stab kill kill kill dialog, tried 'intimidate' for kicks.

Having played the City Elf origin, I was very much aware of 'Right of Conscription', not to mention the blurb about it on the loading screens.

So WHY.... during the ONLY section / conversation of the game, when I get the option to ask for 'Right of Conscription' I get denied????

Maybe I'm wrong, and I have the chance to invoke it somewhere else in the game, but I haven't found it yet.

After reading about it, experiencing it, and seeing it plastered on my loading screen over and over again; the one time I get to try and use it??

EPIC FAIL!!!

They could have let us use it at least ONCE during the game.
(unless we are 'technically' invoking it when/if we spare Loghains life?? Still... that is weak sauce.)

Took me a couple of attempts, but I finally figured out you had to be; blunt, direct and to the point, with Sten.
Never question is culture, just accept it the way it is.

Keeping that in mind, you can increase his approval and get his quest to open.

Give him a couple gifts to help soften him up.

Anytime you show 'Strength'; even if you think you're being a jerk, he approves.

Hehehe.. I remember the 1st time I did this with my female city elf, who is sooooo very tiny standing next to him.
I said something like:   "I'm not here to impress you."  and for the first time got positive approval from him.

I wish we did get the chance to conscript someone, it would have been cool to see how people actually reacted to it.

It looks like we do get to invoke the Rite in Awakening though...can't wait to hinder those stupid templars from their duties.
