a. Basically whenever I start up the game, it crashes back to desktop. Any help?

Both your Processor and video card are likely the culprit. Thats a single core processor and there is a known issue with the game running on a single core processor. They are working on a fix. However your video card also isn't that great. You need to upgrade your system.

Actually, I fixed it by putting both of the CDs into two different drives so that the installation wouldn't pause to ask for me to "insert disc 2" or whatever and that seemed to fix the problem

That isn't single core processor, it is pure dual core proc from Intel and his graphic card is sufficient to play ME2 without problems. I have same graphic card as he has in my 2nd setup and it plays ME2 flawlesly on med-high setting and cca. 45FPS.
In other words, his set-up (proc and GC) isn't the issue here.
