Personally I compare all RPGs with Oblivion.  It was my very first open world RPG and i still play it today.  Bethesda managed to craft a real never ending story thanks to the Nexus mod site and the easy mod installation process.  And it my sound silly, but what sets this game apart is the ability to pick up and place any item in the game.  Most RPGs have everything glued to the floor except for a few choice items.  Oblivion allowed the player to pick up, steal and place any item he or she wanted.

I used to try to avoid doing this, but it's going to be hard to not compare future RPGs to ME2 now. I know a lot of RPG purists have an issue with calling ME2 an RPG, but to me, it's as close to what an RPG should be as I've seen.

Used to be Final Fantasy 7, but Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 killed it. So now, DA:O and ME2!

I find one giant yardstick never applies, instead I carry a case of precise measuring tools.

Hah, I'm with the OP. Everything is compared to Oblivion for me, and Dragon Age was found throughly wanting. Fable II has also become a barometer for me. Though as an Oblivion Xboxist, I'm afraid I never cared much for placing items. More just sneaking around and stealing anything that wasn't nailed down, heh

I compare every game to Ultima IV and every game FAILS to live up to this standard.

I tend to compare RPG's to Fallout though. Nothing can quite measure up to Fallout 2 and I acknowledge that so I don't compare those. But I do hope some can at least try to have some of the features of Fallout 1.

Bioware, i r disappoint.

Anyway, they are miles better than most OTHER developers, so I hold out and keep faith. Goodness knows your writers do their jobs.

On some level I keep going back to either Wasteland or Pool of Radiance, personally.
If I think hard about it, I want something more like Icewind Dale or Fallout.

When it comes to more recently, KotOR and Mass Effect would be what I'd tell people in conversation as they'd be more likely to know those games, and they are pretty good IMO.

VTM: Bloodlines and Freedom Force are top favs of mine, but when asked about what are some great RPGs or such, they often slip my mind (and I had to edit this post to include them.)

DAO will probably become my new measuring stick, though.

Even if my mind will always initially go back to Wasteland and Pool of Radiance.

Well, I have two - Baldurs Gate II with TOB expansion as story, location & characters benchmark and Icewind Dale II for action and battle.

Both of them were great RPG's,  a mix of both would result in a perfect game IMO. :)

I have no yardstick game. Different RPGs embody different qualities. Some, such as Fallout and Arcanum let me dig deep into my character and give me lots of flexibility in how they're made, played, and interact with the world. Others like the Baldur's Gate series or KotOR are fun for their narrative. A rare few like Bloodlines are a combination of both, with role-playing flexibility and a strong narrative.

If I have any sort of yardstick it's probably tabletop. The more a CRPG reminds me of how wide open tabletop can be, while still maintaining a fun story, the more I enjoy it. Unfortunately most games go heavy on one side while neglecting the other. Even Fallout is guilty of this. Oddly enough I think Bloodlines comes closest to my ideal, but I'm hesitant to use it as a yardstick for its many imperfections.

"Sarevok Approves +10" :)

I also cant forget the classical SNES "RPG's", like Lufia2 or Chrono Trigger, which had good/hard battles and cool story.

But Woldan: For the perfect RPG dont forget "Planescape Torment" ;) The Banter and Char-Depth was better then BG2 imo.

A shame that noone finsihed the "Icewind Gate"-Mod  <_<

Cant speak of Planescape Torment, I never played it. I was waiting for Baldurs Gate III at that time and was very frustrated.

The battles of Icewind Dale II were all pretty cool, even better than DAO. I remember having lots of fun trying to defend the sheangarne bridge and defending myself from the attacking mini-army of  slayer knights and the battle priests of Iyachtu Xvim. Oh, and Fighting Iyachtu Xvim himself, as a god.avatar.  Pinnacle of RPG combat.

Yeah , especially "Heart of Fury" was hardcore!
And the fight against Iachtu Xvim was same epicness as the fight against Iuz (and his counterpart) in ToEE ^_^

Sacrem, not wanting to offend you, but then I do not know how old you are....but Oblivion? Really?

If your after a bar that all rpg's must alude to, then it has to be either the first Fallout or Planescape: Torment for me....

Oblivion, while lovely to look at, had the depth and emotion of a dead snail.

I usually compare RPGs to the classic DnD rule based games of the past like baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, etc.

I agree, but thank all the modders that make the mods, nexus is not the only site that hosts all the mods made for that game. But I myself still play and mode
 for it.

DA has captured my interest I want to start modding for it as well.Image IPB

Nostalgia plays a huge part of me with RPG´s and I tend to compare with classics such as Eye of the Beholder series, Drakken or Betrayal at Krondor.

It depends on the sub-genre of rpg. Most western rpg's get compared to BGII, in terms of combat and depth. Any new Bethesda games get compared to Morrowind, although doing so always leaves me dissapointed. Jrpg's again, it depends, combat gets compared to the quality of Skies of Arcadia, story to the final fantasies etc. for me it would be pointless to only use one game to compare against all, for example, using Oblivion as a comparison against Dragaon Age is kind of silly, seeing as both games are almost entirely different on what they want to accomplish.

I tend to compare rpgs to how I feel when playing table top D&D (Been playing for almost 15 years).

Epic stories, flaws heroes, drama, memoriable npcs, drama, dice ... drama.

So far Baldurs Gate 2 comes closest for me and I use it as the standard to which I compare all other vrpgs. Dragon Age Origin has come close and so has Mass Effect 2.

Other games that I love,

Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10

Grandia 1,2

Xenogears (THE ORIGINAL! NOT THAT CRAPPY PS2 TRILOGY!)

Persona 1,2,3,4

Skies of Arcadia

Morrowind

the Fallout series

Luna 1&2 (first Video rpg I ever played:)

KOTOR

Jade Empire

As you can see I kind of started with JRPG, and slowly moved to PC. After Baldurs Gate, I started to feel very unsafisfied with RPGs in general, Neverwinter Nights was such a big disppointment for me that I havn't played another one til Morrowind. I need to connect to my character and npcs on an emotional level, if not, then I tend to put the rpg in the "its okay, not great, but okay" catagory.

For my husband, Ultima is the only VRPG, all others pale in comparison. Though he did spend an ungodly amount of time in Morrorwind.

Betrayal sure was a great game, but in my books. Fallout 2 is "the one". The patched version that is...

Other great RPG titles are Ancient Domains of Mystery, UnReal World, The Witcher, Dragon age (obviously) and even Risen. I never really got into Fallout 3 or Oblivion, they just didn't "hit the nerve".

I've never played either of the mass effects, so can't really tell anything about them. I have both of them for Xbox, but I've not even unwrapped them. And never will. I just bought them to support bioware

Every computer RPG gets compared to the awesome that was Ultima 7 and all its multitude of addons. Yeah, other RPGs have the better story, the better graphics, the better gameplay... But it all comes back to that initial memory: when playing this new game, did it feel as great as when I played Ultima 7 many eons ago? And yes, some games have.

I, perhaps unfairly, measure all crpgs against pen and paper games I have played. Also, I really don't hold any games of any medium up as the ultimate example of everything done right. Variety is the spice of life and I like it when traditional conventions are thrown on their ear. I do remember Wasteland fondly as one of my early crpg experiences but I am sure if I went back and played now, I would find faults. Faults I would likely forgive instantly due to nostalgia, but faults none-the-less.

Subconsiously I guess the Elder Scrolls, simply because Morrowind got me into RPGs in the first place. OTOH when I actually think about it, I'd say Neverwinter Nights since it's basically your meat and potatoes RPG with solid gameplay that can be built into either a boring game *cough OC cough* or something wonderful, like Adam Miller used to do. For plot of course it'd have to be PlaneScape :)
