I know this has been a frequently-referenced issue that players have regarding Mass Effect 1 PC, where Garrus' facial textures are not properly loaded (the game uses the low-res versions).  While I appreciate the current fix available, it still only uses low-res 512x512 textures and even on ultra-high settings his face looks extremely blurry.

I have put an end to that.

Since Mass Effect 1 and 2 often share overlapping textures, I realized that I could use TexMod to transfer the correct high resolution texture (1024 x 1024) that Garrus uses when first met in Mass Effect 2 directly into Mass Effect 1 (they're the same texture, after all).

Here's a link to the new fix:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=03CTD1NA

Remember that you need TexMod to run this and I would assume that you need to also own Mass Effect 2 to validate the use of resources.  Texture settings must be on ultra-high.

If there are any issues, please let me know.

That works great! good work man. Could this work with other characters? i.e are the textures for Liara, Anderson ect. better in ME2?

Megaupload is being stupid again, saying it's "temporarily unavailable". Could you possibly upload it somewhere else?

Has anyone tried this with the Steam version? Unfortunately I don't see any difference in-game, so either it doesn't work with it or I did something wrong.

I loaded up MassEffect.exe in TexMod, opened NewGarrusFaceFix.tpf in it and hit run, that should do it, right?

Making it work in Steam is tricky.  Here's what you need to do, or else TexMod will not load:

1. Rename TexMod (I use a copy and place it in the same folder as ME1.exe) to MassEffect.exe.
2. Rename the original MassEffect.exe to something else.
3. Launch Mass Effect from Steam.
4. This will cause Steam to load TexMod.  Then you point TexMod to the original MassEffect.exe file.

Basically, if you try your way, TexMod never loads due to the Steam launcher taking precedence.  It gets bumped out.  By tricking Steam into loading TexMod, you ensure that it runs.  This took me several hours of Googling to figure out, but I used the Steam version to create the mod.

is it still necessary to run this fix? I thought Bioware fixed Garrus' face in the last patch...

(i did not play the game with 1.02, I just checked the changenotes)

It's partially fixed with the patch - only fixed in the menu screens IIRC.

I seem to have a problem, I have ME2 fully installed, and I did what OP said to do when running the Steam version, but it doesn't seem to work. Garrus's face is still low-res. Any suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind, I don't know how I did it, but I managed to make it work. I must say this is much better then any of the other fix mods out there! It keeps to the original Garrus without changing him, and it looks 10x better now!

I have the steam version and I can not get Texmod to work with ME1 or 2. I get to the point in which steam will launch Texmod for me, however then texmod launches itself aswell :\\\\ Any tips? I've tried several ME2 apps to start up,

EDIT: Nevermind :\\ I just had a corrupt Texmod exe.

First off, this is fantastic. I did comparison screen shots and it looks so much better. Thanks for doing this!

2 questions though. Does anyone have any idea who make TexMod and have any website. Is there anyway of adding a command line to TexMod because it's a pain having to run it everytime I want to play Mass Effect.

After the patch people said on the forums that Garrus' face wasn't fixed at all. A dev replied by saying, and I paraphrase: "Oh, you meant in-game instead of in the menus?" Apparently patching his face texture would require a 1GB patch because they'd need to replace one file that contains a lot of data.

Necroing the thread here, I know, but I just found this mod. I've tried to use these fixes but TexMod just gives me its "D'OH" error. What am I doing wrong? I don't see how I can mess this up, just choose MassEffect.exe and load the .tpf file and click "Run". This is not the Steam version of ME1 by the way.  Does it make a difference that I'm running Windows 7 and the installations of ME and ME2 are in the /Program Files (x86) folder instead of just /Program Files?  If so how would I fix that?

Edit: Nevermind, fixed.

Thanks for this. I just got the PC version on Steam, and I couldn't believe how ugly Garrus was.

I don't understand why bioware doesn't simply patch this... it would mean swapping just one file!!!

For the reason I gave you. BioWare doesn't want to make a 1GB patch.

I need an answer to this (yh, sorry for necroing the thread). I've got the same problem, except mine is in /Program Files (guessing Sable Phoenix has 64bit OS- shouldn't make a difference). I choose the MassEffect.exe in MassEffect/Binaries/, and then the NEWGARRUSFACEFIX.tpf.

It is likely that no one else is playing with that old mod any more. The game is quite old, and even before summer came, with all of the attractions outdoors, hardly anyone was here to read anything and answer. The archives may have something, but not here on the social forums. You'll need to use Google or Yahoo, with a site redirector pointing into the Legacy Forums, instead.

I think I love you. This has let me play ME1 on the PC finally after buying it so many years ago.

I got this working last night with my Steam copy.
I renamed masseffect.exe into ut3.exe and renamed texmod.exe into masseffect.exe.
Also set Steam to not update files for this game.
I ran ME, it ran TexMod. I clicked the top-most icon and browsed to UT3.exe.
I clicked the folder icon in the middle and browsed to the garrus fix tpf file. Highlighted the fix in the left portion. Then I clicked Run.

Are both of these texture files the same? Or is one better? I can't see a screenshot for this one anywhere.

Also, apparently Garrus has 4 different face textures, depending on your distance from him. Are all four of those resolutions fixed, or is it just one of them?

Do I have to load texmod every time I wish to play the game? The game seems to revert back to the low-res textures if I simply load the game normally. FYI I have the steam version.
