We've a lot of evidence that what we actually saw was a mutilated stump of what Bioware originally had planned. It seems Liara had a significant role to play in the story of ME2, and they changed it for various reasons (some legit), cutting a signficant amount of content. What they left was abbrassive and disjointed, and painted a very poor picture of Liara.
I agree that the scene was probably torn apart and redone several times, but I do think the end effect was intentional. They wanted to make sure as many people as possible dumped the old LI's for the new ones to "validate" their decision to sideline them in ME2.
I guess I see that point, but frankly I think its a very weak choice. Why not make it a tough decision? Why not make the new LI's so compelling that you're tempted no matter what the other LIs say? Or go all out and actually introduce a rocky element into the old relationship. Its a pretty weak choice to undermine your characters in order to push people away.
