The city elf does *not* fight in their life, it was taught by it's mother (this is the weakest part of all origins IMO). If it would actually have fought things, it would surely have been put to the gallows well before the wedding.

You, sir, have missed the entire point of the CE origin. You forget that you have been invisible sword fighting with your cousin Soris since you were children (and you always won, I might add). You never needed to train with actual weapons, as evidenced by the fact that you two can dualhandedly defeat countless guards and minor nobility despite never having held a real sword before in your life.

Your father in the CE origin explicitly asks you not to mention your martial training before the wedding. You had been trained. But your father and you tried to hide it so as not to appear as troublemakers.

Don't forget that in the city elf origin, Duncan also tried to wanted to recruit the city elf's mother into the Grey Wardens, but didn't do so to respect the wishes of ... (this is where the name fails me -- the wise old elf man in the origins). So Duncan definitely had his eye on the offspring since the offspring was "so much like the mother," etc.

Sweet! I get points for looking like an idiot! :o

Anyway, I'd definitely say the CE is the weakest of origins for fighting skills. I know they're there, but the character's mother is said to have died years ago, so it's unclear how (s)he kept practicing after that especially in such a hush hush environment. That said, it just adds to the awesomeness of the CE that Duncan would go for them instead of the better established fighters.

HN, as mentioned, is said several times to be a good fighter, and it's clear (s)he's also a good leader. The duties of nobles pretty much fit right in with what makes a good Grey Warden, so how would Duncan not go for him/her? Especially when Ser Gilmore is there in addition or as backup... It's a win-win.

The CE fighting skills remind me of certain pen & paper D&D campaigns where after I handed the DM half a dozend nicely formated pages of character backstory, he turned to me and said "It's nice, but you don't explain how your character learned to wield a sword." and I was staring at him "Does anyone care?"

Alistair is kind of unimpressed with the family bickering.

The youngest Cousland was known for his/her fighting prowess throughout the castle. And as Duncan said, they must have some good sense of responsibiltiy and leadership to be left as the castellan in bryce's abscense.

And not to pick on Fergus, he's cool and all. But when I first met him, I knew he wasnt exactly the most talented fighter.

Regarding Jory and the Human noble being disconnected:

Highever is (or at least can be seen as) used as a name for both the castle (and presumably surrounding city) as well as the region. Much like Antiva is both the name of a country and the capitol (Antiva City). The Bannorn use a similar naming strategy. Taegan is Bann of Rainesfeire, both a city and an area.

It is therefore completely possible that Duncan, on his way to visit the Couslands detoured past a tournament being held in an entirely different area of the region, a local festival if you will, spotted a likely recruit in Jory, and sent him back to Ostagar, while he himself continued onwards to visit the Teyrn.
