We’re looking into the audio cut-out problem and we need some help from the community. If you are experiencing the problem regularly, please review the questions below and post your answers here. Some of the questions are straight from the guidelines for posting problems, but others are more specific to this issue.
1. Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
2. Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
3. What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
4. What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?
5. What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?
6. What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
7. Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
In order to provide maximum benefit to the programmers looking at this issue, please avoid unnecessary discussion in this thread and posting comments about other problems. If we need more information we’ll either post a general request here or send a PM to specific individuals.
At this point we can’t commit to a particular fix or ETA but we will do our best to keep you updated on our progress.
Thanks for your help.

2. Dell XPS desktop, 3 years old.
3. Windows XP Home SP3
4. 1.86 GHz Intel Core2Duo E6320, 32 bit, no overclocking.
5. Integrated sound card on a Dell Inc 0CT017 motherboard. The Chipset is P965/G965.
6. McAfee Security Center is running in the background, but never scans while I'm playing.
7. No problems with sound in other games. Other games include Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Mass Effect 1, and Dragon Age: Origins.

2. Desktop.
3. Vista 32bit. Service pack 1, I believe.
4. AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor 2.20GHz. Over-clocking? I'm not sure if I am or not.
5. Realtek most likely. I'm unaware, I'm also currently playing music/volume/all sounds through my headphones, which are Gigawre. I'm unaware what it is set to. A walkthrough to find out would help.
6. No other applications, and no virus scan. Just Notron running in the background, not doing anything.
7. No, only with Me2. I am only playing World of Warcraft aside from that. And there is no "true" cut-scenes or dialouge. Sound seems to be where it should, regardless.

Thanks for the reply. I do sometimes notice them after explosions. However, I'm also experiencing the same effect at times when ther are no explosions (at least not that I can tell). Can the same effect occur when taking fire from ordinary Collector weapons?David S wrote...
Hi Spocklives, it sounds like you're experiencing the ducking effect caused by large explosions that occur near you. They are supposed to muffle the sound for a few seconds to simulate ringing ears.

Ofcourse, not only! The collector's beam gun might be one that muffle your sound and, besides that, when your health drops (and you start seeing blood veins on the screen), the sound muffle, lowers and you start hearing your heartbeat.

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean like at 1:28, 4:12 and 5:00 in this video?
Archangel loyalty mission spoilers ahead:
www.youtube.com/watch
If this is the case then I'm not sure different pc setups are relevant as I have played this scene multiple times and the dialogue cutting out always occurs in the same place. Furthermore, another person with a completely different rig to me also has exactly the same audio cutouts at exactly the same times on their video: www.youtube.com/watch

1. Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
Yeah, in the beginning (prologue story) and the intro, the sounds working great in every aspects. Finally, when I get in the "new" Normandy ship (after the tutorial story) the sound suddently vanish. The only sound working is the environnement one but I can't hear voice when NPC talks and I can't hear music either (from the music radio in the captain room). This is not a sound card issue cause I was using an onboard sound card (Realtek 7.1 HD sound card) which wasnt working either even after the drivers updated so I installed a Creative SoundBlast X-Fi Xtreme 5.1 PCI Express audio card, updated it and it's not working either too.....
2. Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
I'm using a Desktop.
3.
What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP,
Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc.
variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
- Processor : Intel Quad Q8400 @ 2.66ghz
- Ram : 8.00gb ddr3
- System : Windows 7 (home premium) @ 64-bit
- Graphic Card : Geforce 9800gt @ 1gb ddr3
- Sound Card : Creative Sound Blast X-Fi Xtreme (5.1) (PCI express)
4. What type of
processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock
speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your
processor?
See question #3 and it is not over-clocked.
5. What type of sound card are you using? Is
hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using
(stereo or surround)?
See question #3 and i'm using stereo(with sub) Cyber Acoustic 2.1 (model : CA-3090) and hardware acceleration is not unable as far as I know.
6. What other applications are running
on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a
scan when these issues happen?
My anti-virus (AVG free edition) is not doing a scan when I play, it is only schedule on a weekly scan @ 2am eastern time. When I play ME2 there isnt anything running in background (no msn, no bit torrent programs, nothing at all)
7. Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
Experiencing this problem for the first time. Im a big PC gamer and I never had any problems with audio before. I play Dragon Age Origins from Bioware without any problems and a lot of other games too from other compagny. (Like Fallout 3, Battlefield, World of Warcraft, Civilization IV, Steam games (Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat...etc) and many more)

Usually at the end of sentences from Jacob and Jack. Also noticable in the field where one sentence is completely cut off by another. I always figured that in the field it was because I would run over another audio trigger before the other finished.

1.- Audio cutout happens in cutscenes and game areas where dialog happens, such as activating a news terminal, or things like that. The audio begins with a delay, so it is not in sync with the video, and when the dialog or the scene changes the rest is cut out. It happens randomly, and if you replay the scene, you might get in-sync audio on the same scene.
2.- Laptop
3.- Windows 7 home premium, 64 bit
4.- Intel Core i3, 2.13GHz, 64 bit, no overclock
5.- RealTek High Definition Audio. Desktop Stereo Speakers, stereo configuration. As for acceleration, I'm at a loss, as I can't find the setting to enable or disable audio acceleration in Windows 7
6.- No other application is running, except for McAfee SecurityCenter, but it is not set-up to perform a scan.
7.- I've experienced this same problem with Mass Effect 1. This is a brand new laptop, so I haven't been able to test it with other games.

It's funny, I dont know if this will help you guys from Bioware, BUT I went to the game store today in the morning and I bought the FRENCH version of Mass Effect 2 (cause i'm french) just to test it and see if this will change something. I desinstalled the ENGLISH version from my PC and I installed the FRENCH version instead and now the audio is working just wonderful...... I've been playing for 2-3 hours and no audio cut-out occured of any sorts. I must say that I find this very odd cause I rather play videogames in english cause french game sounds very strange to my ears I must say lol (they are French (France) DUB and the "accent" is very annoying lol) so until a patch comes out to fix the audio problem with the english version of the game, I will keep playing the strange french version .lol
I just wanted to let u know the big difference here cause I find it very strange that the english version isnt working and the french one is and that maybe it will help you guys to know.

Another thing - cutting out the conversations. It seems to me its the same problem I had in ME. So I think the "bug" was carried over to ME2. A question: when the voice is cut out, do the characters still move their lips? In ME it was as if they fell silent, stopped talkin after voicing first few words from the sentance - no lip movement.
