1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or
after a specific sequence of actions?

End of cinematic cutscenes is the most I've noticed. Most recent playthrough  (just started) Lazarus station when Jacob answers that Illusive man will be answering questions last few words get skipped. Mordin recruiting mission scene when he sends the pc off with a cure, last few words cut off. Reloading the game doesn't help. (Haven't gotten further yet on this playthrough, but I recall a few other sound cut outs during previous ones, not too many though, and all in simular manner: last words of the sentence at the end of the cutscene).

2.       Are you using a
desktop or laptop computer?

Laptop. Alienware Area 51 9750 model.

3.       What operating system are you
using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the
Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64
bit)?

Windows Vista 32 bit

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify
manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you
over-clocking your processor?

Intel® Core™2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33 GHz (2 cores), no overclocking

5.       What type of sound card are
you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration
are you using (stereo or surround)?

Realtek HD Definition Audio (RTKVHDA.sys [6.0.1.6043] driver)  I did not see an option to check hardware acceleration on the ME config utility or in game. Desktop stereo speakers

6.       What other applications
are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus
scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?

Usually a bare minimum, services and antivirus. Antivirus (Avira) isn't doing a scan during the game.

7.       Do you
experience these problems with any other games on this computer?

I haven't. Mass Effect 1 is running smoothly, so is Dragon Age.

Thanks for looking into this! :)

Hi all,

This is my first post though i've been a member for years. Anyway I felt compeld to respond to this one, so here go's:

1 I notice audio issues randemly mostly the only time it seems to be repeatable (across many playthoughs now) Is during the valve opening section of the last mission. It typcaly happend after a valve was opened and when the fireteam leader called in a sitrep ie cuting out the valve dialoge. I typcaly use storm during that sequence, however on reloads (after I got shot up) I tried walking normaly and the audio still cut off or overlaped..
The only other time its repeatable (for me) is during the first mission when jacob os on the radeo with wilson asking him to find a way though thats not crawling with mechs or somthing. Anyway this entire line fails to play at all and you just hear wilsons responce.

2 I'm using a desktop.

3 i'm using windown xp home 32 sp3 fully updated.
4 i'm using an intel e2140 1.6 duelcore 64bit cpu with no over clocking.
5  I have headphones and a 2.1 suround sound desktop speaker system. I have an onbord realtek hd chip set, when I change speakers i set the config to match. I use full hardware acceleration and my drivers are current. I did tend to note more issues using headphones than my desktop speakers. but the main senareos  i mentioned happen with both.
6 I have the steam colectors eddition so aside feom the steam client the only other program runing typcaly is eset smart security. or msn messanger (shuting down ether make no difrence). eset is not scanning during gamplay.

7 other games don't have any issues.

Thanks for all the hard work and the geat gaming.

1. No - audio cuts out beginning at splash screen for ME2 after the EA splash and before the menu - no audio throughout play, but I can occassionally get it back if I rescan with the binary sysconfig

2. Desktop

3. Windows 7 Home Premium

4. Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 Ghz, 32 bit

5. Realtek HD Audio card

6. No other progs

7. No

* This is an iMac with a windows 7 partition - games runs well, but sound only works 1/2 of the time. Will repost if I can find a Mac based Boot Camp solution.

I found a solution to some of the issues in windows 7. If you turn the volume up you can still hear what is being said, which led me to look at the default sound configuration in windows. Basically, if you have any sort of surround sound setup, the default is a massive 7 speaker uber setup. Since I only have four speakers, most of the sound was being sent to speakers I didn't have. EDI for example was almost constantly silent in missions, cut scenes were fine, but I never heard her in missions.

So go into control panel, and select your speakers, then don't hit properties, but configure (should be on the left hand side). Change the speakers to represent what you have. It worked in solving my audio cut out issues.

And yes, I did just register to post this.

I have a couple of questions on the game audio. Whenever the collector general exclaims "Assuming direct control" all other sounds seem to be muffled or lowered in volume for a few seconds, is this by design? (So you don't accidentally miss it in the heat of the battle.)

And when walking around in the cities there are NPCs having conversations you can eavesdrop on. But if you get close enough to trigger one and then meanwhile move to another pair of NPCs that are holding a different conversation (or a news terminal or similar) and trigger the audio for that one, then the previous conversation will just stop short (no fade-out or lowered volume or anything like that.) Is this also the way it's supposed to be?

1. It seems as if it started when I entered the Citadel, but it occurs everywhere in the game now. I had a about 18hours of playtime when it started.

2. Desktop computer

3. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

4. Intel Core i7-920
    2,67GHz clock speed
    4 cores
    64-bit
Dynamic overclocking Gigabytes C.I.A2 Motherboard functions

5. Realtek Onboard sound. Hardware accelrated (I think). Stereo configuration.

6. Applications running: Steam, uTorrent 2.0, Avira Antivirus, Curse Client v4, Razer Lachesis.
Antivirus scan is not running when this happens.

7. No, I do not experience these problems with any other games on my computer. I have even played through Mass Effect 1 (40-50 hour playtime) without these problems. Mass Effect 2 would be my first encounter with this problem.

tried setting the music and side effects to 30 and 20 with the voice at 100. I could hear it now. but with minor muffled echo like voices. EDI's voice is still missing during missions. Some characters (like the injured blue sun merc in the mission to get the krogan) have slurry speech that I can't understand even with my settings above. I was also relying on the subtitles before, but they too have disappeared. Only the last sentence would appear, if you wait for it for about 20 seconds. this is frustrating...

I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is the same problem that you guys know of, but I'm at the part where you go to Recruit the Warlord. This has happened to me in Mass effect 1 as well. When someone is talking on screen, and you get into a battle at the same time, audio for the voice just cuts off, and you miss the whole line of dialogue. For example, The merc announcing "The krogan are coming, and there's..... " and it just cuts out randomly

1. Any where with dialogue and battle near each other. Doesn't happen all the time.

2. Desktop.

3. Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate

4. Stock I5 -750 Quad core processor.

5. Realtek onboard, and I'm using headphones.

6. Just Steam and Ventrilo.

7. Nope, just Mass effect 1, and Mass effect 2.

I have seen the exact thing on my system severe sound muffling, and it is through out the game.. it pops in correctly at times ..but it is random. It is spefically noted in scenes where you are interacting with people and asking questions, I have yet to hea ror understand anything the smioking man is saying.. the scene where you are protecting archangle the loud speaker giving you directions is completely uninteligble.

1. It only happened to me on an old hard drive, 5000 RPM, but I upgraded to a 7500 one, and only during the scene on Legion's loyalty mission where you see the giant Geth server room and Legion is talking, as well as briefly when asked to choose between Samara and Morinth.
2. Laptop.
3. It used to be Vista, but after the upgrade to a new hard drive and Windows 7, this hasn't happened, and it's home office.
4. I use an Asus GX-50, I believe, which is a gaming laptop, and it is a dual-core intel/centrino processor. I do not know the other information.
5. Unknown; the default, I suppose. I use stereo though.
6. No other programs, as far as I can tell, no.
7. No, as the only other games played were Oblivion, Crysis, CoD: 4, and KotOR I and II.

Hope that helps, because it seems that you need a 7500 RPM hard drive (with 500 GBs of space, but I dunno if that really matters) and possibly Windows Vista 64-bit might cause some of the issues.

1. Anytime there's a conversation or cut scene the audio stutters radomnly like Max Headroom and, as if the the length of the audio file it is using runs out the audio stops. If it's light stuttering you'll lose like the last word. If heavy stuttering, you lose more.

2. Desktop.

3. Vista Home 64 bit edition.

4. Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20Ghz. No Overclocking.

5. Onbard 7.1 no hardware acceleration enabled. With Logitech headphones. stereo.

6. Running Game Booster and Advanced System Care in Boost mode.

7. Nope, No Audio problems with any other of my games.

Update on previous post: Tried playing around with graphical settings with no noticeable improvement on the problem. In fact at one point, I choose one option to allow an old fried to take her comrade with her and it glitched so bad I lost all the remaining dialogue from all characters. Really hurts the ol' immersion that does. Like going to the movies and having the projectionist screw up the film.

1. Happens randomly throughout the game. Sometimes in battle but most of time I found it happened in non combat areas like Ilium or the Citadel when player induced conversations take place.

2. Desktop

3. Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600), had a vista mod added but I removed it since I had a feeling it was causing a memory leak (removed before ME2 was installed).

CPU: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+
CPU Speed: 1.90 GHz Performance Rated at: 3.8 GHz
RAM: 2.0 GB
Video Card: GeForce 7300 GT
Video RAM: 256.0 MB
3D: Yes
Hardware T&L: Yes
Pixel Shader version: 3.0
Vertex Shader version: 3.0

Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio

6. None or sometimes firefox/msn messenger (usually none because my graphics card kinda sucks and I don't want too much lag).

7. No. And I've played SC, SC2 beta, WC3, Mass Effect 1, Starwars Battlefront 2, FF8, Kotor, Deus Ex and WH 40k: DoW (and all its expansions).

I don't think the other specs are really relevant given I obviously had enough room to install and I know that I need to keep around 10% of my hardrive space free for so my computer doesn't slow down and that I obviously have a DVD ROM drive that functions.

1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
This is hard to tell for me.  I played through the ENTIRE game once, and had no sound issues at all.  But then in my 2nd playthough, I had the sound cut out for like 30 seconds a couple of times (different sessions, and I think after the patch too).

2.       Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
Desktop

3.       What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
Windows 7 Home Premium x64

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?
Intel, QX9650, 3.0 GHz, 4 cores, Win7x64, no

5.       What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?
Creative SoundBlaster XtremeGamer, yes, 5.1 surround speakers

6.       What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
Nothing that would interfere with games (at least in theory): Valve Steam, Windows Live Messenger.  Games folder on ignore in virus scanner, but no it wouldn't be scanning anything (no scan scheduled nor downloading during game time).

7.       Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
Nope, but Unreal Tournament 3 sometimes likes to bluescreen in ha20x2k.sys. (But I since have the latest OpenAL installed from the OpenAL site and still waiting for UT3 to crash again.)  heh

1. Typically, the first time I run ME2 the splash screens have audio but there is no audio for the 'press any key' screen, the menu screen, or any of gameplay. none whatsoever. If I quit and restart the game, it usually comes back on that second try. Today I tried 11 times in a row with no luck, getting frustrated enough to just give up and come on the forums to rant.

2. Desktop

3. Win7 Ultimate 64bit (all latest updates)

4. AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor, 2.20 Ghz (not overclocked)

5. Onboard sound (MSI motherboard, uses Realtek HD Audio Manager)

6. Anywhere from no other apps (including shutting down all no critical system processes, etc.), to half a dozen or more various apps running; never seems to have any effect on if this happens or not.

7. Never had sound issues of any kind with any other games on this machine for the past 2 or 3 years or so, since I built it. Have installed/played a couple dozen major titles and several dozens (possibly hundreds)_more shareware/cheapware games.

1. When it happens(I've had to uninstall the game and reinstall it twice now to fix it.) all voices are muffled as if they are in the background. This makes them very difficult to hear and honestly makes the game unplayable.

2. Desktop

3. Windows 7 64 bit

4. Intel® Pentium® D CPU 3.20GHz not overclocked.

1. For me it only happens in Grunt's loyalty quest, specifically after the Krogan PA discusses the history of the Krogan. There's a loud pop, then complete silence, but it comes back after about 10 seconds.

2. Desktop

3. Windows 7 Pro 32 bit

4. AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (dual core 3.11 ghz), not overclocked

5. Onboard VIA chipset sound, no hardware acceleration

6. Norton IS 2010 is running in the background, and no scans take place.

7. Only with ME2 and only in the area mentioned at #1.

Like Christopher Blair on page 1:

1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
It appears to occour randomly but rapidly (1 to 10mn) and it is accompanied with heavy VIDEO stuttering also that makes the game unplayable. Video card is an Nvidia GTX260 by the way.

Additionnaly the sound seldom comes back after a few seconds with a major sound artifact (a "boom" with echo that lasts for a few seconds then fades away), but most of the times the game just crashes back to windows. Had occasional blue screens also. Of course the game is not "virtually" unplayable but is really unplayable in my case.

2.       Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
Desktop

3.      What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
Windows 7 32bits

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores,
32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?
AMD 64 X2 6000+ 3GHz, no overclocking

5.      What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?
Realtek HDA integrated and Asus Xonar D2X (enabling one or the other, never both at the same time). Stereo with Realteck onboard card, 5.1 with Xonar, no differences at between the two.

6.       What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
None, I only use windows to play games

7.       Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
First time I encounter such annoying and persistent problem.

I might add that I played half the game without that kind of issues, that at the beginning I had a Sound Blaster Audigy installed, which I replaced because I really thought the problem came from it (and it had done its time).
Right now I just get headaches and a little desperation because this problem lead to the replacement of my sound card and power supply (that seemed a little light for my configuration), mutliple drivers updates/OS reinstall, and still no improvement. I also thought it could come from installed DLC but after reinstalling the game without it nothing gets better (and I'm unabled to use my savegames)...
