 1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
All the time it seems - once it happens - it happens very frequently with the only option being a reboot of the computer which seems to buy me more time.

2.       Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
Desktop

3.       What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
64 Win 7

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?
Intel i7 2.79 - no overclock

5.       What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?
Soundblaster xi-fi xtreme audio

6.       What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
Norton Internet Security - silent mode doesn't help

7.       Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
ME2 and DA only.

I'd like to report that my sound issues have been *fixed* by upgrading my onboard Realtek High Definition Audio to an Asus Xonar D1 sound card. NO other system changes were made. This would suggest the cause of the problems to be, in my case, the interaction between ME2 and the Realtek chipset.

The problems I had before the upgrade had 2 forms, depending on whether I was in a conversation or not:

- Outside conversation (combat, walking around, ...): ME2 would freeze up seemingly at random, for anything from 10 seconds to over a minute. It would lock up the entire pc for the duration, no interaction possible (no alt-tab, num lock etc). After that it would pick up again, but in the first second it seemed to play every voice and sound effect that would have happened in the interval all at once (an effect that sounded like the audio had been bottled up under pressure and then came pouring out all at once when the bottle was uncorked).

- In conversation: the voice effects would stop but the written conversation kept going (so a silent chat, doable with subtitles). Music kept playing. If I stayed in conversation mode long enough, the voice effects would start up again after a while (the first one would be out of sync with the written dialogue though, starting too late) and the game would continue normally. If I exited conversation mode while the sound was still cut off, the game would freeze up as described above.

The only area where the game would never freeze or stutter was in the in-game menu screen (esc). I used this to tab out of the game without getting the freeze issue (the game and pc would still freeze up if the game was alt-tabbed out but still running non-menu'd in the background).

To narrow the cause of my problems down to the sound system, I tried disabling the Realtrek completely (device manager). Sure enough, the freezing issue didn't occur as long as the sound chip stayed disabled.

1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or
after a specific sequence of actions?
Randomly.
2.       Are you using a
desktop or laptop computer?
Desktop
3.       What operating system are you
using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the
Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64
bit)?
Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit
4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify
manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you
over-clocking your processor?
Intel Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz, 32-bit, 1333Mhz FSB, 6 MB l2 chache, 45 nm cores, not overclocked? Using an XFX (Geforce) 9800 Gtx Plus video card.
5.       What type of sound card are
you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration
are you using (stereo or surround)?
Realtek High Definition Audio onboard chip (Asus P5Q mainboard). I tried everything from full to no hardware acceleration, with lower (or no) acceleration giving poorer sound but not fixing the problems. Using 2 analog stereo speakers (no sub).
6.       What other applications
are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus
scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
Didn't seem to be a factor as I repeatedly tried running ME2 with every possible background process disabled and the problems still occured.
7.       Do you
experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
I had similar issues with Bioshock 2 (voice effects breaking up, game freezing up for varying periods) - never had these problems with Bioshock 1 though.

1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or
after a specific sequence of actions?
I have noticed it specifically in Shepard's quarters (the music doesn't play), and the cutscenes introducing the Normandy 2 and when you first come on board the Normandy and meet EDI. I am unsure of other locations where the music should be playing and is not. I haven't noticed any other sound is missing besides the music. I do think the music has left the game entirely, because I don't remember hearing it, but only noticed with the normandy cutscenes where I remembered it playing.

2.       Are you using a
desktop or laptop computer?
           Laptop

3.       What operating system are you
using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the
Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64
bit)?
           Vista Home Premium 64-bit

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify
manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you
over-clocking your processor?
Intel Core 2 Duo P8600@2.40GHz 64-bit processor. 6GB RAM.  I don't know anything about overclocking.

5.       What type of sound card are
you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration
are
          you using (stereo or surround)?
I am unsure if this is helpful, but cannot find anything that says 'sound card'. Here are the sound, video and game controllers listed under device manager:
          BlueTooth Hands-free Audio
          High Definition Audio Device
           IDT High Definition Audio Codec
I have no idea what is selected, enabled, disabled, etc.

6.       What other applications
are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus
scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
Just Firefox browser in the background.

7.       Do you
experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
           No.
This did not happen when I first played the game. I THINK it has something to do with DLC or the patch you released for ME2.

 1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?

During grunt's rite, when the keystone is activated, and about to drop... the sound cuts out. It comes back a few seconds later. it used to be fine the last time I played a few months ago.

Also, if the game is running for a long time (at least it seems this is the cause), at the end of any conversation, sometimes the very last word will get cut off.

2.       Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?

Desktop

3.       What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?

7 home prem. x64

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?

i7-920 @ 3.00 ghz.

5.       What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?

Realtek on board. Yes. Stero/headphone.

6.       What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?

Lots typically. Doesn't seem to matter what is running though.

7.       Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?

Nope.

As an aside... the most annoying bug in the game for me is where my character somehow gets up on to invisible ledges that I'm unable to get off of then. It happens constantly and requires alot of screwing around to get off, if at all, or sometimes a save/restart works, but most often I have to reload from an earlier save which is a real downer..... especially since it maxes at 50 saves and I save like a madman due to me1..... I usually finish me1 with around 200 save games, lol

p.p.s. - if you don't bring tali back, and as a romance option, in me3. I will cry, record it, and post it on youtube.

and you will be haunted

I can easily answer these questions.

Number 1. Never know when it will happen

Number 2. Desktop Computer that I built myself.

Number 3. Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit Edition

Number 4. Intel Core i5 750, no overclocking of cpu and have 8GB's of ram.

Number 5. HT Omega Claro with 5.1 speakers

Number 6. Microsoft Security Essentials, which doesn't run while I'm gaming.

Number 7. Only expierence these problems on this computer.

Note, I fixed this problem by taking out the PCI HT Omega Claro, and putting in an ASUS Xonar DX PCI Express soundcard using the latest drivers from ASUS on my computer.

My sound problem : the environment sound is much higher than the others, even if i put it at 1%. In fact, putting it at 1% or 100% is the same. It happens not everywhere, only in cities and vehicles (like the Normandy, the citadel ...). I HAVE to put it at 0, then i don't have any environment sounds (steps, gunfires, vehicle's engine ...). It's pretty annoying :(

Well... I think I am done until this gets addressed. Thankfully I got to play through DA twice before this thing popped up - it really happened to me only after downloading the golem mod although I downloaded several things at that time.

ME2 seems good but within 5 min the audio is gone and it simply ruins the experience.

Motherboard - Gigabyte - GA-MA790GP-UD4H (onboard graphics disabled in Bios) Phenom 940 quad chip 3000mhz not OCed, temp 50 degrees tops. Realtek HDMI onboard, ATI 4890 graphics slightly OCed - Chip 900, Mem 1000, fans at 100%, temp <60 degrees. XP Pro 32 bit, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 - no auto scans etc. I do it all manually. I'm a minimalist, nothing in the background running except Kaspersky &  Catalyst Control center. Problems -ME 1, voice cutout in Gambling club only. I prepurchased ME2 & have been playing for 6 months with no problems (over 300 hrs - retired thank you). I only play games with great stories & this is one of the best! As soon as I installed Overlord the **** hit the fan big time!!! Within 5 min the sound was cutting out, to fix it I would have go to the Control Panel - sounds & uncheck the mute box. I now have the volume control on the taskbar & play in a window to get at it more simply. It mutes at any time, any place in the game ( the worst was 11 times in 15 min!) half the time that it mutes I also lose control of Shepard who just runs backwards, I have to mute & unmute 4 or 5 times in order to regain control! (no controls work, not Esc, mouse, etc, etc). The mute rarely happens out side of ME2, but once in a while it may. I always have the latest drivers & Direct X installed (no hacked drivers etc). As an aside, please make the actual love scenes in ME3 more like the ones in ME1, very romantic. Thank you, JGP

My audio was fine, but after loading the new Aegis DLC, my game sound has gone completely. I tried reloading the patch and the DLC and it is still the same (PC Version).

Any ideas?

I have a Dell SudioXPS with a Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio board with up to date drivers and "fixed" the issue with a set of headphones plugging them into the top jack on the case. I had tried everything without luck, but played the last 10 hours or so with zero issues. Something you might try. It was a free fix using some headphones.

I got rid of my issues I believe by moving to a four speaker setup from a 2 speaker setup. I think somehow - someway, there is a conflict with environmental sounds and how they are made 3D. Don't have a better answer than that. Nothing else ever "showed" this issue but both ME2 and DA were affected. Haven't reloaded DA, but ME2 has been good for hours which hadn't been the case for months.

1. Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or after a specific sequence of actions?
What happens for me is that the audio plays for the first 2 logo screens, but not at the menu (no music playing). When I load my game, it still has no sound. Although it seemed like before I installed a few DLCs it still had a chance to work. I did have sound at one point.
2. Are you using a desktop or laptop computer?
Desktop
3. What operating system are you using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64 bit)?
Vista Ultimate 32-bit
4. What type of processor are you using (please specify manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you over-clocking your processor?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHZ. Not overclocked.
5. What type of sound card are you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration are you using (stereo or surround)?
Integrated sound on an nForce 680iLTSLI motherboard. Initially stero, switched to surround and back to stero, no changes.
I don't know if its hardware accelerated or not. I checked dxdiag, but couldn't find anything.
6. What other applications are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?
Nope.
7. Do you experience these problems with any other games on this computer?
No

1) I'm having a problem with the last word or 2 of each speech in cut scenes being clipped

2) Desktop - Dell XPS 420

3) Windows 7 Home x64

4) Core 2 Duo E8400. Overclocked from 3ghz to 3.445ghz using setfsb. Removing the overclock resolves the issue - but I like the extra ingame performance!

5) Auzentech X-Mystique (C-Media CMI8768_ chipset). Connected to a Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder using the cards Dolby Digital Live output. Driver version 7.12.8.1740

6) Avira antivirus 10, Thunderbird 3, Pidgin im client

7) Starcraft 2 is the only other game affected (which is why I'm on these forums right know - was hoping there might have been a solution by now :D )

Further to my above post I have more info to reproduce the problem.

It only occurs (for me at least) after resuming from an S3 suspend to ram with the CPU overclocked.

If I resume without an overclock then it is fine. If I boot Windows, rather than resuming, then it is fine - even overclocked.

1.       Does the problem happen in a specific location in the game or
after a specific sequence of actions?

The issue happens randomly.  If my system volume is set to normal levels (about a 4), the front speakers drop out almost entirely.  This is especially noticeable during the Galaxy Map navigation, but occurs pretty much everywhere.  Turning up the volume causes the speakers to cut back in normally, but if you decrease back to normal levels, they cut out again.

2.       Are you using a
desktop or laptop computer?

Desktop system.

3.       What operating system are you
using (please specify whether it’s XP, Vista, or 7, whether it’s the
Home, Professional, Ultimate, etc. variant, and whether it’s 32 or 64
bit)?
WinXP Home, 32-bit

4.       What type of processor are you using (please specify
manufacturer, model, clock speed, # cores, 32 v. 64 bit, etc.)? Are you
over-clocking your processor?

Intel Quad 1.6 GHz, 64-bit, no overclocking.

5.       What type of sound card are
you using? Is hardware acceleration enabled? What speaker configuration
are you using (stereo or surround)?

Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro, w/ hardware acceleration.  Currently set up with 6.1 Surround.

6.       What other applications
are running on the computer when you’re playing ME2? Is your virus
scanner doing a scan when these issues happen?

No other apps are up, except passive McAfee (no scan in progress) and GMail Notifier.

7.       Do you
experience these problems with any other games on this computer?

This issue is unique to Mass Effect 2.
