Again another sign of highly proprietary data.  As I said before I don't think it's Bioware because they've NOT protected their save files before.  Use some deduction.  If you want to take this offline I can show you how.

This has nothing to do with Sony.  It's a developer decision.  Atlus locks their saves, Infinity Ward does not.  Ubisoft locked their saves with RSV2, Naughty Dog did not with Uncharted.  Harmonix locks their saves, Insomniac does not.  I can see it being done for online games with leaderboards, but for Bioware(Or Atlus with Demon's Souls) to do this with a single player game makes no sense.

Agreed, 100 percent.

I have a lot of time invested in DAO, and, to be honest, am quite attached to the characters I've created. To be unable to back up the save files onto a flash drive or some other convenient storage medium is disheartening.

And if I were to lose the aforementioned files without be able to back them up, the feeling of being disheartened would morph into something far, far more noxious and less diplomatic.

Glad t see we are all back to where we were on the first page. I don't own a PS3 so this doesn't affect me personally, but it really confuses me as to why Bioware would make this call. I would love to hear an official explanation.

My guess is so that achievements appear more meaningful.

SLOTH: Who are YOU? I'll say and do whatever I want on this site (and thread) because I have an equal say. You're saying YOU have an unequal and biased "say?" LOL get your head out of the sand contrarian. I'm on the topic when it comes to saving sticks and the PS3 because basically, THAT'S THE ISSUE.

Yes, it is the issue because Windows (and the Xbox) are an open architectured system.  Keeping game saves locked keeps it closed.  Open architectured systems have a unrealistic goal, do-it-all for every piece of hardware and software out there, impossible (and hence it's "leaky" track record over the years).

Nice try trying to get out of your short "straw" flub. Your attempts to save face are hilarious.  You defended short "stick" thinking that's what you said when you said "straw".

seriously people, can we have one ****ing thread that doesn't turn into a damn flame bait ?

THE POINT of this thread was that locking saves have caused issues for ps3 owners who have had the hard ware issue, it is NOT about competing with microsoft, does it bring the question up yes, but let me make myself clear this thread is about unlocking save.

my god...

Meh, I guess.  I could understand that more if you could do something with PS3 achievements like you can with XBL..  Don;t gt me started on how the achievement system has been detrimental to gaming.

OK, excuse my ignorance, but what can you do with XBL achievements that you can't with PSN trophies?

Wel, MS has changed thir policies so I guess nothing, now (shows how often I use my xbox)  At one point they had a small selection of unlockable avatar crud for achieivng certain gamerscores, which I am told stopped years ago.

If trophies/achievements is the reason - then two points:

1) Tie the save lock to PSN account instead of the PS3. Other games have done it, same effect, but games can be backed up and restored if you are indeed the owner. You can authorize up to 5 machines on your PSN account, so that helps the crowd that plays in multiple locations. YES, a very small population may swap amongst themselves to cheat but you are talking about <1% since you only have 5.

2) If it was to make achievements mean something, what does this do for the people that get to 98% and have a hardware failure? That is actually where I'm at, just missing the traveler trophy that never would ding for me despite going through all locations on guides.

Usually I care less about trophies but since I played this game so much naturally, I was already over 90% from regular play through. So I was going to make it the one game I actually completed, but so much for that. :/

HA!  Not sure I'd go as far as you.  But, if I lost the combination of my Demon's Souls and Dragon Age saves it would definitely be a good day for the Jim Beam distillery.  My 60G died last summer and all I lost of value was my RSV2 save - It a shame seeing I back up my 320G drive on a monthly basis.

Gotcha.  I know I use my PS3 a lot more than my 360 but I didn't think I'd miss something that obvious.

Interestingly, it looks like someone has already cracked the encryption on the PS3's HDD...

Clicky

So I wonder if I take my old and new, decrypt both, and transfer the saved game info, will the new PS3 read it and accept it.  Hmm.... well I have a weekend project it seems.
