Different Setting for the Bioware RPG....

Most RPGs seem to favor some flavor of fantasy or Sci-Fi, with Obsidian developing Alpha Protocol, I am very hopeful it will be good. Not simply in the sense that I hope it will be a fun game for my own enjoyment, but that it will open up the genre a little bit to some non-traditional settings.
For example with Red Dead Redemption on the horizon it made me think again how much I would love to see Bioware develop and RPG in the old west setting. I think it would be a lore rich environment for a great rpg with moral choices, different skills to develop, colorful characters, the whole nine yards.
It did excite me to see Bioware do Jade Empire which although still fantasy, ditched the -admittedly enjoyable but overused- traditional European fantasy in favor of an Eastern setting. Reminded me a little bit of the old Quest For Glory games, they started with the traditional medieval Europe, then moving to a more middle eastern, followed by African settings. These I thought were great ideas to play with the grenre tropes a little. I would certainly welcome further Bioware attempts at the JE setting or other fantasy inspired settings outside the mold as it were.
Still the spy rpg seems to hold at least the promise of something unique and fun for the genre. I hope it delivers. Other than the spy and old west settings, any thoughts out there for great yet underused backdrops for a Bioware-style rpg?

maybe this realistic approach can be applied to other settings as well, for example ancient rome or a historical more accurate middle ages instead of "tolkien pseudo middle ages"
a rpg about pirates could also be intresting (set in the caribbean

im not completely sure, but could alpha protocol be the first rpg set in a world with no fantasy elements at all? no magic, no jedi powers etc.

Alpha Protocol is the first rpg I can think of that either has no fantasy or noticeable sci-fi connection. (For anyone wondering about Fallout, I would consider post-apocalyptic to be sci-fi.)
I gotta say I like your idea of ancient Rome. I do believe Disney has a Pirates of the Carribean open world RPG in the works, with former DAO lead Dan Tudge as director. So that certainly has potential.
I've also thought perhaps a modern business rpg setting might work. Something set within the world of Oliver Stone's Wall Street for example. I just love the rpg genre and think there's quite a well of untapped potential when it comes to the setting. Obviously any departure from the norm will be seen as a risk, so funding may be a problem, I don't know.

Apparently, Fable 3 may be your kind of game, at least if (/scoff, scoff) Molyneux is to be believed. If I'm not mistaken, there was even some video presentation where it was shown that you'll be able to sell children into slavery and them trying to resist the process to elicit some kind of emotional response from the player.Noilly Prat wrote...

I'm definitely looking forward to Alpha Protocol by Obsidian, but I want something more fantastic in nature out of BioWare. Not that I'd mind a dash of cyberpunk if it was set in the (not too far) future.

There's way too much fantasy RPGs, some sci-fi, but cyberpunk is so overlooked it's sad. It has so much potential.
Well, I'll keep hoping.
BioWare will probably keep working on the Mass Effect and Dragon Age universes, with SW:TOR MMO, so they probably won't start a new IP anytime soon.

My answer hasn't changed from before. I still want BioWare to do an Urban Fantasy RPG. Preferably something in modern times, but with less overt supernatural elements than say Shin Megami Tensei games such as Persona.
Ok, I can handle that.

There's always Arcanum. It's not much, but better than nothing and it's a great game. Though something modern would be nice.Mr.Kusy wrote...

Also, how great would a 1920's based rpg be?! What with the prohibiton, speak-easies, rum-running, organized crime, rise of jazz and blues. Would be cool.
I really like that idea.

Oh right. The latter Persona games had that.
Oh, and yes go ahead. Just remember you'll probably die afterwards.

Agreed, a "proper" steampunk game would be lovely.Balerion84 wrote...

I would love Bioware to get the rights to the DC Universe and make a Justice League RPG, think of it as you can start as Batman, and since his character can literally be any alignment based on whatever piece of fiction he's in, it makes sense for you to make moral choices with him. Then you have to recruit the res tof the Justice League a la, go to Metropolis for Supes, Themyscara for Diana, Oa for Green Lantern, etc. Admittedly you'd have to fudge a few things to make it reasonable but it could be pretty sick. Albeit, it would be sans character customization on an aesthetic level.
Also it would never actually happen. But still, in my dreamworld it's possible.

Agreed, and not just RPG any genre. I was excited for Damnation and ended up being the WORST GAME EVER. I would like a proper Steampunk game from a good developer.

I've actually thought about this as well. At least in terms of Batman. After playing AA some last summer, it occurred to me then what a great RPG you could do with Batman. This however would seem to get away from what Bioware likes to do in terms giving the player freedom to define their own character. Mass Effect gets away from this some, but Shepard is still customizable in appearance, sex, and background.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of the Fable 3 previews, and it does seem to fit that bill somewhat. I'll probably enjoy the game for the same reasons I enjoyed the last two, but I never really trust those guys to deliver on the story front. For me, Fable is more about hacking and slashing, getting drunk and farting in people's faces, and murdering my wives and husbands as they try to leave me. And the day a Fable game makes me feel even the slightest bit of guilt over doing horrible things to people, is, um... the day that I am very surprised.

Oh right. The latter Persona games had that. The last games of that series I played was Persona 2 on PS1. That head shooting high school backdrop is deifnitely not what I want. >.< No teenagers BioWare! I want adults in my Urban Fantasy!

All right, adults who commit quasi-suicide in an office building!
...Bad idea?
