I was looking at the timeline for events in the Mass Effect universe and I saw what I consider a few discrepencies in the timeline. All the profiles for Shepard say that he/she joined up with the Alliance military at age 18. Now, my preferred service record is Sole Survivor, and the timeline places that as happening in the year 2177 CE. This would place Shepard at age 23, since he/she was born in 2154 CE, when this happens, and one of the combined codex entries says that the thresher maw attack is 'your first mission'. How can that be Shepard's first mission if she/he's been with the Alliance for 5 years? How long does training take? I'm just curious, it seems like a pretty wide gap to me.

Maybe there was nothing going on where Shepherd at to fight for 5 years.

Well Sheperd went through the N7 program, which is basically the elite training program of the Alliance. That could explain the extra training time I suppose.

I actually posed the question to my brother a little while ago, he went through special ops training for the air force. He says that the timeline I stated before would be realistic. He says that you basically never stop training. They give you basic training for 6 months, and special ops is an additional 3. After that he got posted to his first duty station, where he had more tiers of training to do as well. So in order for Shepard to have earned the highest ranking, the '7', it woud make sense that it woud take that long. Especially since the entry for 'N7' on the Mass Effect Wiki states that it was an elite training program. Add that to all the lauding they do in the game of how badass Shepard is and it makes sense.
Sorry if I took up space answering my own question. The replies did get me thinking though, and that was what I was looking for. Thanks for takin the time to read this, and hopefully it can satisfy someone else's curiousity in the future.
