Since they're right next to the mess hall, I keep thinking they're something to do with refuse management/recycling... seems logical that whatever they do, those two buttons/lights are somehow connected to them

i assumed they were space bins, but it appears looking at that pic, that they have pipes leading from the med bay. Maybe "excess" fluid containers but why they would be there i dont know

Maybe freezers for food storage since "kitchen" is direct on the other side of those stairs.
