     My theory on the reapers is that they really like to party a lot, but they're parties really suck there's no booze, and like only two people show up and  it just really sucks. So every 50,000 they come to the milky way to see if anyone wants a party, when people reject that idea they get mad and kill everyone, then they realize what they've done, and go cry in dark space for 50,000 years.

     The sequence of events that leads me to believe this in mass effect series is basically this:

     The beacons were just from bitter protheans when they realized they were missing out on the first good party that the reapers ever did and getting killed from it. This filled Shepards mind of wanting to stop the reapers from partying with everyone. Saren realized that the reaper parties had potential, but with a high paragon skill shepard convinced Saren out of that mindset and caused him too shoot himself in the head.

     In Me2 I think the collectors are just normal people who suck at partying and just go to the reaper parties. So this leads me to believe they just want to have company in their misery. They built that human reaper because the reapers, said they could miss out on a party if they did, the reapers think that the only way to enjoy parties it seems is if an awesomer race like humans becomes a reaper. However they don't realize that they know they'll just be pretending to have fun, and won't enjoy being a reaper.
