When I let him out I remind him that I expect him to help out and not to make things worse and he always shows up on his own when the time comes, though Teagan and Isolde seem to be a little pissed that you free Jowan to begin with.
I mean, can you free him so he will run away, not just accepting his offer to help?

Good question... since it's Jowan who suggests the blood magic in the first place, which leads to you asking... 'isn't there any other way??"

If you tell Jowan to run away and reject his help, then Conner must die. Without Jowan there, there is no possibility of learning about another way to kill the Demon in Conner. That's pretty silly, but there it is. For all of Jowan's faults (and they are legion), I think Jowan probably knows more about the theory and principle of magic than anyone else (PC included) except maybe Flemeth and the First Enchanter. The man is a genius when it comes to the theoretical applications of magic. His practical knowledge........leaves something to be desired.

No, its not a random encounter, its just that theres a bug on the 360 and the PS3 that won't show the area on your map.pudi0072000 wrote...
Erm, if you bring Alistair, he'll suggest going to the Circle - I think even Isolde suggests it once you've freed Jowan. So no, you don't have to kill Connor unless you want to. Jowan can show up on another sidequest later, although it's a random encounter and nearly impossible to get without using the console.

You sure about that? To my knowledge suggesting going to the circle only happens after Jowan reveals that there might be another way to save Conner other than killing him. Until then, Alistair and Morrigan seem to have a (very rare!) ageement that the only way to cure an abomination is to kill it, and that is the common wisdom.

I'm playing on the PC, but it was a random encounter between the Dalish camp and the Brecilian Forest for me, which popped up as I was traveling and locked as soon as the area was cleared...xzxzxz701 wrote...

Fairly certain, though it's been a while since I did that playthrough. I remember I was planning on killing Connor, but Isolde had to have begged me a dozen times to find another way. I had the option to leave the castle but I didn't take it. I'll see if I still have that savegame so I can double check, but I could've sworn Alistair or Isolde brought up the Circie.

Dialogue options may have had something to do with it as well.
Or it might have been how much information I pried from Jowan while he was in his cell.
At any rate, you don't really need Jowan around if you want to rescue Connor.

Yes but AFTER Jowan opens up the possibility. Morrigan herself says, "There is only one way to deal with an abomination" (i.e. kill it). It's one of the rare places in the game where Alistair and Morrigan see completely eye to eye.
You do get Morrigan or Wynne to mention the circle but IMX only AFTER Jowan mentions the possibility of another way. This mention will always happen if you leave Jowan in his cell or you allow him to help.
If you don't than I am fairly sure that the only solution left is to kill Conner.

I'll just be safe and tell Jowan to help out but not to make things worst. Thanks for the help!

Then... he suddenly doesn't want to help out quite so much... so I usually respond with... fine, you can sit in your cell then.
I dont take any approval hits from the party that way, either...
Teagan eventually goes to the dungeon to fetch him.

Indeed, and in such a case you will always get the option to save Conner. Indeed AFAIK the only way you don't get that option is if you either tell Jowan to go away and reject his offer for help, or have him take a dirt-nap then and there. Either way, AFAIK if Jowan is unavailable, then you must kill Conner.

On my first play through, I told Jowan to run and that I never wanted to see him again. I had Wynne in my party. There was still an option to ask if there was any other way. Wynne suggested the Circle Tower.

Again, are you absolutely sure about that? The information I have (and the Prima Guide agrees with me for what it's worth) is that unless Jowan is available OR unless you have successfully completely the Circle Mage quest AND saved the mages, you MUST kill Conner. The dialog options give you no other choice. Even Morrigan (who knows a fair bit about magic) says that "killing Conner is the only way" and Alister agrees (a rare agreement for those two).
As for Wynne, you can't have Wynne in the party unless you completely the Broken Circle so that's a non-starter and I know that Morrigan doesn't mention it unless or until Jowan does (and then only to confirm that yes, Jowan has it right).

Here's a thought, complete the Circle Mage quest first

Here's a thought: Alistair (for fairly decent reasons) suggests going to Redcliff first. If you do, then what I said happens.
