I am annoyed though that I feel I have to defend my choice of avatar/PC to the LOLOLOL DWARVES ARE UGLY LOLOLOL idiocy that strike up occasionally on the forums, but that's my own fault for being baited ;)

I would prefer that this thread NOT turn into a dwarves are short, fat, and ugly forum.  Going beyond physical characteristics of the dwarf are the concerns I have in regards to dwarf play with DAO.
Hopefully no dwarves were hurt in the making of this thread.

I honestly normally hate dwarves(elves to but thats unrelated) but my dwarf play throughs in this game have been amongst my favorites especially my casteless dwarf Baren

I cant bring myself to play as a female dwarf because of the freakish arms though

I know I'm gonna catch all kinds of hate for this but it'll be the dwarf lovers chance to show me the errors of my thoughts.
I've gone through 10 complete playthroughs but there a couple I still haven't finished which as you can guess is the Dwarf Noble and Commoner storylines. I've taken both Dwarf PCs back home to see where their storylines go and I just can't get myself to continue after that.  I wana move on to a new PC instead.
Is it just me? Am I just a big speciesist or do the dwarf storylines feel rather lax?
Justify playin a dwarf PC woulda been the title thread but it felt rather hackneyed.

Play what you enjoy. If you're only trying out the dwarves because you feel guilty, then you're just not going to enjoy the dwarves at all. If you geninutely want to try to find a way to get your dwarven groove on, then try the opposite race and see if that will click better for you or play the origin differently. (In the noble origin, you can either be framed for the murder or kill your eldest brother in self defense.)

And here's a proper dwarf joke. If it doesn't make you chuckle, then you don't have an inner dwarf.

An elf walks into a pub and clears his voice to the crowd of dwarven drinkers. He says, "I hear you dwarves are a bunch of hard drinkers. I'll give 500 gold to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of extra stout back-to-back."

The room is quiet, and no one takes up the elf's offer. One dwarf even leaves.

Thirty minutes later, the same dwarf who left shows back up and taps the elf on the back. "Is your bet still good?" asks the dwarf.

The elf says yes and asks the pub keep to line up 10 pints of extra stout. Immediately the dwarf tears into all 10 of the pint glasses, drinking them all back-to-back.

The other pub patrons cheer as the elf sits in amazement. The elf gives the dwarf the 500 gold and says, "If you don't mind me asking, where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?"

The dwarf replies, "Oh... I had to go to the pub down the street to see if I could do it first."

I like dwarves enough as companions, but I don't like being one. I've played both origins and they're great, but I can't identify with them as a race. I got as far as Lothering with my DC, but I couldn't get any further with her.

To be honest I don't like elves either, although I did get quite into my city elf (but mainly because I shaved her head and made her gay, and a pretty tough cookie at that.) I am playing a Dalish in my current game. I hate her. I just needed to get the Warden Commander achievement (and the bow achievements, which I've done now) and I can't kill Loghain with a character I like. I have too much empathy for the guy.

At the end of this game my elf will lose everything she love and have a miserable life, and I'll be glad of it.

YOU GET A HAPPY ENDING!

The dwarf commoner sets her sister up with the (new) dwarf king, becomes a living ancestor and gets to bed ALL the romance characters... takes a while but you can get through them all and still finish with 100% approval rating. Not a bad finish at all.

actually i have the same thing with elves. i find the dales and the city elf so boring. They need to grow a beard or at least start drinking. The innocent victims scenario just doesn't rub me right

The reason I avoided playing the Dwarven origins in the first place (next to the fact that I'm petite in RL and thus didn't look forward to playing a short guy in a computer game) was my hate of Orzammar. I'd played the game a couple of times and simply dreaded the notion of having to spend yet even more time in that place (the questline 'Paragon of her kind' was just a tad too long for my tastes). What ultimately changed my mind were a few avid Dwarf posters on this forum and a beautiful fanfic a friend of mine wrote. :)

So, I decided to play both Origins, see where it took me. I loved both my Dwarven characters (and unlike some other people I didn't find them ugly in the least). But unfortunately I didn't make it very far with either character. Not because of the characters themselves, or because of their being short, or because of their dialogue options (which were something really new to me after having played only humans and elves)... it was the Dwarven politics that really ruined it for me. Don't take me wrong, the whole concept of Dwarven society is absolutely amazing, kudos to the writers here! But I found that I really couldn't enjoy playing someone who was actually part of that society: the omnipresence and unfairness of the caste system on the one hand and the deceit and intrigue of the noble caste on the other hand just ruined it for me, I couldn't bear the thought of my characters being subject to THAT all their life. It's different with the Dalish and City elf: here the unfairness comes more from without, in Orzammar it's Dwarven own tradition.
I had the same feeling when I tried to play a really, really evil character once: I just couldn't do it.

Wrote this in another thread:

"Yeah I think a lot of guys feel that it's immersion-breaking to play a female player-character, especially since this game has romance subplots. And that especially applies to dwarven females (unless the player has a midget fetish), because then you can't even look at "something nice" while running around Fereldan.

Anybody who wants to play a dwarf after watching LOTR, or playing Warhammer, probably chose a male fighter. Heck, I wanted to make a male dwarven fighter. Only reason I made a female dwarven rogue was because I wanted to roleplay the most unlikely hero possible.

But now I absolutely love her to bits~!! Which is why I say Bioware/Gaider did a remarkable job with the dialogue trees, allowing you to fully immerse yourself from any possible angle. Unlike my first playthrough (male human noble warrior), I can "hear" this girl when she speaks, I can imagine every conversation she has with a Companion in cinematic format, I grin at her adorable greediness, and my grin grows wider whenever the gratitude evaporates from the faces of the pathetic people she just saved/helped when she shakes them down for "fees".

Most likely, all rogues get the same dialogue options in towns... but it's just comedy gold when the rogue in question is this little cherub who looks like Naruto, LMAO. A male human/elf rogue just won't give the same effect.

I only wish Sten is romanceable LOL, because they're just so funny together.

And now I can better understand why a lot of players vehemently oppose having VA for the player characters in DAO. If there's only 1 female VA, she can't possibly portray what's in my head."

Anyways, there are a lot of approaches you can take when playing a dwarf. I love my dwarf commoner rogue girl (see avatar pic) to itsy bitsy bits. She's just ridiculously adorable (especially when she's being greedy and criminal), even though she's expressionless just like any other PC. Leliana only wishes she's half as cuddly. Sure, everyone looks down at her but that just makes her even more adorable. Besides, I got my man-mountain as silent backup whenever I need to shake down some refugees.

Yes, the orangutan arms problem... oh well, medium armor alleviates that a little bit. She'd be perfect if it wasn't for that.

It's the shortness that I like about dwarves. I always find it funny seeing my dwarf walking around in massive plate armor, especially in scenes where he's standing in front of his squad mates. The little guy is the one protecting the taller humans, and standing toe to toe with the dragons, as the tank of the party, while the humans are all fighting from range. The humans and especially the elves look so skinny after playing as a dwarf. It took me a while to get used to playing as a human.

As for the dwarven traditions and politics, my dwarf noble just happened to be born into that world. He always picks the nice guy options and doesn't act like an entitled prince.

Oh but what fun is there if you don't do the "dwarven" thing? If you're playing dwarven noble, but being a chivalrous nice guy, then you might as well play human noble. If you're playing dwarven commoner, but you care about Fereldan and pay your respects to the Chantry, then you may as well play... um... human noble.

My dwarven commoner rogue pickpocketed every single person in Ostagar, including Alistair, Jory, Daveth, and Duncan. I would have pickpocketed the king if the cutscenes didn't cut in so fast. I also shake down all the refugees, demand payment for every little good deed, ****** off the Revered Mother, and kick beggars out of my way with my stubby little leg. You can't do these things when you play Human Noble. Enjoy it NAO while you can!

I played completely differently to you, and we picked the same Origin. My Brosca sees the Grey Wardens as her life now (she took Morrigan's offer, so she's now official warden commander of Feralden in my universe.)

Now, while she made choices that weren't completely goody goody (I killed Isolde, for example, instead of getting the mages to help the kid) I did see her journey as a sort of redemption for her life a Carta thug slaughtering merchants Beraht wanted dealt with.

The Brosca origin is, frankly, horrible. You are nothing. You start with nothing. Your sister is forced to sell herself and get pregnant so you don't have to, and you have to do as you're told and kill for someone. You're offered a fresh start and a way out of it by Duncan, and my PC decided to try and make something of herself instead of being the casteless duster brained scum everyone expected her to be back home :)

I have to say that DAO is the first game where I liked Dwarves as a race. I think part of that came from seeing Orzammar for the first time. But I haven't played a dwarf beyond Ostagar and nor will I.

Elves will always be my first choice, followed by Humans.

I think the best Dwarven joke I came across was Oghren's, from the character reveal video.

"Warden, you gotta hear this one. This human walks into a tavern."   *mocking laughter*

I wish they wouldn't have spoiled it by adding more lines to it, in the game I mean, but then again, it very much depends on your humor.

The dwarf origins are amazing, and the follow-through is the best of all the origins, IMO. And Bhastian, my dwarf commoner, is easily the hottest thing on two legs. Unfortunately, I cannot handle the shortness over the long term. I am a 5'11" woman and it kills me a little to have my avatar be cut out of frame, and to have to stare at navels and crotches all the time. I do like the stoutness. I have a hard time playing elves because they're short AND slight. At least my dwarven ladies look like they can lift their swords.

I love the dwarven NPC's though, and I am really looking forward to Sigrun in Awakening. Too bad there's no romance.

I love Dwarves, I just don't like playing them. I am a Dalish Elf at heart and enjoy them the most. I usually don't pick humans in games if there are other choices. I have done all of the origin stories in DA:O and couldn't continue with the two dwarves. Maybe I was an Elf in another life.  :D

Thank you for shedding light on where I may have gone wrong.  For the most part I was playing my Dwarven roles all goody goody. The commoner I tried to be bad but it didn't stick and for the most part I was just doin this playthrough to see what a dwarf and Alistair knockin Red Steel Boots would look like hah.  As for DN I again tried to be bad by gettin nasty with the two girls but didn't know i could kill my older brother. Hmmmm... I just may restart that Origin to kill him and see where my badass takes me from there.
I do hav a slight partiality with Elves, dam you Liv Tyler, but I hope that doesn't affect my view on dwarves although from previous posts it seems Elf lovers hav a hard time gettin through Dwarf Origins and the same vice versa for the majority at least.

It's been confirmed that any race can be an Orlesian Grey Warden so if you're wanting to try a dwarf without suffering through a Paragon of Her Kind, I would say Awakening is a good starting point. I've been reading a board where some guy got to beta test Awakening and while he's not giving away details, he did mention that there are some positive developments for dwarves (compared to what they dealt with in the first game).

When Bhelen tries to "warn" you about Trian's intentions, one of the dialogue options (I don't remember which) should indicate that you will strike the first blow instead. Something like that. This is the conversation that will trigger the extra cutscene with Trian later on.

I've been wanting to do a playthrough as a Dwarf, I did both the commoner and the noble but once I hit Ostagar I just ran out of gas. Somehow it just gets this feeling of "and now for something completely different". Now that I think about it, City Elf may have turned out that way too.

Human Noble, upon exiting the Origin, is all about the happy stabbity revenge killing that Howe will ultimately suffer. Dalish Elf still has a story going with trying to get cured of the disease thats ravaging your body and faint hopes that Tamlen is out there.

I do solemnly swear that once I finish this current playthrough (either Female Elf Arcane Warrior Mage or Male Human Pure Blood Mage, any thoughts?) I will make the next one some kind of Dwarf. That should appease the proud stout folk and prevent the bludgeoning of my private bits with the Nugcrusher.

I usually don't like dwarves. This game is definately an exception, as I absolutely love the dwarves in this game. I think they were done very well. Same goes for the elves. The humans make me ashamed to be one in real life though....

This. My Brosca only did what she did in Orzammar for her sister and when she knew her sister would be okay with her patron, she jumped at the chance to be better than what she had been. My character is mostly good, is a protector of the poor and doesn't just jump at the beck and call of the nobles. Heck, my HN is worst than my dwarf.

I'm finally sucking it up and playing an elf, even though I am dreading it. The elves get on my freaking nerves and I dread going to Brecellian. The only elf I've enjoyed playing was my elf mage, who is my third favorite character.
