Ok. I downloaded Mass Effect 1 earlier today. No longer had the software for my old copy, so I dropped 21 bucks on the EA download.
Download went seamlessly, as did the install. Now, though theres a problem.
First. No icons. In fact, the only way I can open the game is through either the EA downloader, or hunting the .exe file down in C:
After that, I get the launcher, the music and the opening splash picture, then:
Failed to compile global shader FDOFAndBloomGAtherFallBackShaderPixelShader (Filenmae not found)
Raise Exception() Address = 0x7e812a5b (Filename not found)
Cxx Throw Exception() Address= 0x78158e89 (Filename Not Found)
Gmatrix 2D::Swap() Address= 0x107e83 (Filename Not Found)
Address= 0xe8781b4c
And a hearty WTF was had. I'm dead certain my video card can run ME1, so what the hell is up?
I am now officially annoyed

What are your system specs? For me it sounds like an unsupported videocard.

I think I just need a new set of drivers. My card is an older one (ATI Radeon X800XL) but it's the same card a friend of mine uses, and he runs ME just fine.

This is not possible. The ATI Radeon X800 series supports only Shader Model 2.0b. Mass Effect 1&2 require at least Shader Model 3.0. Also it's not a software thing, it's a hardware thing, so you need a newer videocard to be able to run the game. That's why the game crashes. You don't meet the minimum requirements.
