So you only care about the poor based on their race? That attitude really helps "race relations" or whatever you wish to call them.

And there are always some poor, regardless of race, who have found means of living off the welfare system.

No, I do not care about White Men because they are apart of the system that controls this country.  I am not going to discriminate my opinions based on economic level.  Because they have flexed their muscle in the past I do not feel any sympathy for any program that would exclude them.

Because he f*cking is. Bioware isn't trying to make some grand racist statement of an abhorrent nature by making him white, okay? People seem to find any reason to be offended.

F*cking sky. Being blue. Why couldn't it be black?

Edit: oh wait. The sky is black half the time. Can't even choose sides, stupid sky.

Now if this discussion was about poverty in general then I'd be inclined to agree, but I feel no sympathy for those left out of Affirmative Action. Of course my views on education are radical as well so that has quite an influence on my outlook.

This topic is probably going to a place that should be on another forum. Although I am actually confused as to the meaning of this post.

So because Bill Gates is white and is filthy rich, only minorities should recieve government aid? And to say other races aren't a part of the government these days simply isn't true.

I don't know what race you are, but there isn't some "white people club" where we all share money and remember the good old days where we had colonies everywhere.

As a black man  I enjoy saying this everytime I can:

People like you hold all minorities down and keep racism alive.  You're just as bad as any white supremacist.  Everywhere you look you see race and racism, and ultimately you are completely unable to adapt to a society which has stopped looking at everything as a matter of race.

White people go out of their way to not give a damn about race.  You should too.

Basically if Affirmative Action excludes White Males because they are White Males I have no problem with it.  It was intended for Women and if it seems unfair it is because it is actually an unfair system that was put into place as a balancing act.

I do not care about the race, I just believe Affirmitive Action has a place and I do not care for those that are excluded because the program just works that way.  Once it is over then I am fine with that.

*EDIT:  Also I prefer to fight against those in power, if you misunderstand that then that is your decision.  Also I'd like you to clarify what you said to what I said instead of giving me a stock answer.

It's because poor people and rich people do not live together in the USA.  If rich people lived in the same communities as black people then this wouldn't be an issue since the local governments would have plenty of funding for education and other social programs since rich people pay more in taxes.

Why are many poor communities black?  It was less than 50 years ago when many black people were not even allowed to attend college or hold certain jobs in this country.  Even though discrimination is illegal now, lack of opportunity due to economic segregation has prevented many black people from uplifting themselves out of poverty.

I don't know if you live in the United States like myself, but it just sounds like you are just trying to make the case for affirmative action/race based programs. I know plenty lower-middle class white invidivuals who get passed over for the sake of a college or company wanting to meet a quota and thus look good in the government's eyes.

And $5 says somebody will now accuze me of being a racist for opposing the way government aid works these days.

Actually I think the solution is to federalize public education rather than base it on real-estate taxes.  Real estate tax funded education disproportionately effects black people since a larger percentage of black people live in poverty compared to other ethnic groups.
If we were to federalize education funding though it would improve education standards for all poor people regardless of their race.

It's hard to discuss poverty in America though without mentioning blacks since blacks have been hurt the most from poverty.

Thanks for the advice Uncle Tom.  Maybe you should get a job as a stage prop at the next GOP convention.  Right wingers always love displaying token minorities that they can point to whenever someone accuses them of being racist.

I really should feed the beast here, but I'm going to.

So, selective racism is ok? Are all white people racist too?

Overcorrecting to compensate for historical wrongs isn't the answer. There are examples of this all over the world. Here in Canada, the Europeans took the land from the First Nation people, destroyed their culture and now we've created a system that continually pours heaps of money to them which is then abused by people in power within these groups and we turn a blind eye because we're 'righting' a wrong. First Nation culture is treading on thin ice, their children have the highest rates of crime, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse in the country. They have few financial and legal restrictions on alcohol and gambling- and yet, they can have a free post-secondary education. Wanna guess which one is taken advantage of?

Governments believe that injecting money or power will fix a problem. Have you ever heard of a car being fixed by increasing the horsepower? Too many people cry out for fast solutions to problems that need generations to fix.

I'm more concerned with Gender equality as it still exists today.  Abuses happen regardless, nothing is going to change that people do what the must and people will do what they want.  If AA wasn't in effect you'd still have businesses choosing men over women, but because it is in effect and that the US has put such an over the top priority on education then it begins to shake things up.  Once it calms down then it can be effectively pulled back.  AA is a very slow thing that  is unsuccessful in some cases especially with the wage earnings gap, but I appreciate the attempt.

EDIT:  As it should be clear I am more interested in the numbers side than the actual human side.  To me I consider white males more of a variable than actual people, this is why I sound so callous in my posts and I am not going to change that tone.

I agree with this post somewhat.  Affirmative Action should be modified so that it applies to income rather than race.  Therefore, poor people can benefit and nobody is negatively affected based on skin color.  Everybody wins.
Now as for compensating for historical wrongs not being the answer, I dissagree.  During segregation, blacks could not hold many jobs, and very few could attend college.  As a result, blacks basically had no choice but to live in poverty.
Now there are laws which prohibit discrimination but that doesn't magically uplift blacks out of their socio-economic status.  They're still poor, live in economically segregated communities, have crappy overcrowded underfunded schools and live in neighborhoods where crime, drugs and gangs are prevalent.
This all translates into less opportunity and therefore keeps black communities stuck in poverty.

I think the federal government should stop basing education funding on real-estate taxes.  Poor blacks can't afford much property so obviously local governments there aren't going to be able to afford good schools.

We really need intervention to correct past wrongs.  Much progress has been made, but there is still work to be done.
