Wow. This is quite the thread necro. O.o

@Lord Athena: I would not want to be forced to play an elf just as I didn't like being forced to play as human in DA2.

I believe the elves extended lifespan/immortality was due to a closer connection with the Fade. Fade spirits can impart an extended lifespan, just as the cursed spirit of the forest did to Zathrian and the Faith spirit did with Wynne. It is also claimed that all elves at one time could do magic. If you understand by this that all elves had a stronger connection with the Fade, then they could also have had a stronger connection with the spirits of the Fade. May be spirit shamen were far more widespread. At this time it may even be that the negative emotion demons did not exist or were very weak. Alternatively the creators and their dark counterparts were simply benign spirits and demons. The weaker benign spirits flee in the presence of demons and the latter would grow stronger on the introduction of humans to the scene as there would hjave been an increase in negative emotions on both sides. The elves lost their ability to easily commune with the benign spirits and those spirits had less interest in interacting with mortals. According to legend the departure of the creator "gods" coincided with the rise to power of the humans and the loss of the elven immortality, so the various strands do tie in with one another.
