Just wondering how well they are written and how thick they are. I saw on Amazon that there are at least three out now, with another one the way.

I have only read Ascention.
The Bad: The writing is quite unimpressive. The plot is paper thin, the twists are seen from a mile away, the climax is almost non existant.
The Good: A decent amount of codex type info. A detailed look into TIM and cerberus. You get an "oh yeah I know what they are reffering to" moment in ME2.
Verdict: Read it, but don't expect a literrary marvel. Borrow from the library and definately don't pay money for it.

If you're an ME fan, you'll enjoy them.

If you're a literary kind of guy, you probably won't like them.
If you are a fan of ME, and you generally don't despise video game literature, then you'll enjoy them.

. . . and you pass judgement on someone else's writing skills?
I think not, my friend. I think not.

P.S. you even managed to massacre the book's title.
