So I have heard a lot of people have problems playing as the ME2 Vanguard. This is mainly due to people still trying to play it as if it's still a ME1 Vanguard. I did it myself. It took me a dead team, no medigel, and a fully loaded shotty to discover how to play a ME2 Vanguard properly.

So let's begin...

Ideas to get out of your head about ME1 Vanguards

-We aren't Biotic/Combat Tanks anymore
Our effectiveness against crowds of enemies has decreased greatly.

-Barrier isn't taggin along anymore in our default power wheel
Barrier was part of what made the Vanguard so damn deadly before. The amount of damage a Vanguard could take with barrier on was massive. But now we are left to fend for ourselves without a precious Blue shield.

-Shotgun has ammo now
We used to pummel our enemies into a corner and shoot them nonstop for about five minutes (Immunity is so annoying). We can't do that anylonger with the new ammo system.

-Adrenaline Burst is MIA
Another powerful Vanguard power was the ability to skip the cool downs of powers and just reuse them once more. No longer there in ME2.

So what's good at all about the ME2 Vanguard?

-Fantastic Hit n' Run class
The Vanguard can take out certain targets with out even letting them get a chance to fight back.

-Effective Close Quarters Combat
Shotgun and SMG with a very strong melee (especially if upgraded) can help in knocking out shields and armor.

-Can take tactical positions by force
Proper use of abilities can allow you to turn the tables on baddies dug in pretty good.

-Good against armor
Incendiary rounds can allow you to take out enemy armor with ease.

What's the bad?

-Unable to hold prolonged fights
Over staying your welcome when fighting a enemy can and probably will lead to your death.

-Shields still gives a vanguard a hard day
Vanguards usually depended on Tech orientated allies to help with shielded enemies. Well... they still do :(

-Power Recharge
The new cool down system stops us from being able to swamp enemies with biotics.

So how do I play a ME2 Vanguard properly?

The best way to play a Vanguard is to use it as a Hit n' Run class. Basically pick out a target, charge, eliminate. Picking special enemies or heavy hitters is good use of a vanguard as they can eliminate a potential problem before they have the chance to be one. This makes many difficult encounters so much easier.

-Pick and Kill Tactic
Very simple and most common tactic I use for Vanguards. Basically pick a potential high risk target. Say Krogan or Vorcha Flamethrower, or even Collectors (Anybody who makes this fight much harder then need be) You lower their shields down and for good measure, their armor. Charge in with a shotgun and follow up with a melee and shotgun shots. This makes the fight quick and keeps the target from defending themselves.

-Taking THEIR cover
You can overthrow somebody using The Pick and Kill tactic and then take their cover. This can completely destroy the enemies' cover leaving them completely defenseless.

-Off The Ledge
Very simple use of Charge to throw a enemy off a ledge. If they are near one of course.

-Pull and Charge
If somebody is too close to his goons for you to make a successful kill without dying then you can pull them towards you and wait until they're within a safe range.

-In The Open
Simply use your powers to knock them into the open rather then trying to flank them.

-Burn them
Use your incendiary rounds. They can help knock down armor.

-Think Fast
Always have an escape plan. Or better yet, 5 of them. Be ready to move fast and quick. Losing focus of why you charged at the krogan can cause you to die.

-Bring Barrier Back
If unlocked already, use it. It actually increases the time you can usually spend in a fight if you activate it when you have full shields. Activating it without shields can recharge them for quick use. This makes either fighting more effective or can save your life a lot.

I'll think of more uses but this is mainly how the Vanguard goes. Try it out, the results I believe will speak for themselves.

I dont understand the point of this thread. The information is nice and helpful but there is already a 50+ page thread on Vanguard tips and tricks.

Slam's more fun and awesome than barrier. Instead of barrier-ing, charge in to regen your shields. Lower cooldown time too

Guess I'm "doing it wrong" then.

First time when I played through as a vanguard I only used charge maybe once? Maybe not at all..

Second time through I picked slam as my bonus power, and maybe used charge 2-3 times, it didn't seem effective at all, even with a point blank shotgun shot.

And before anyone goes "OMFG HOW DID YOU EVEN GET PAST TUTORIAL!" I pretty much played as I did in ME1: a mid/long range pistol user. Since we didn't get throw or warp in ME2, I just used Pull to get enemies out of cover, and sometimes I'd even do a pull - slam combo.

Charging into an enemy's face and shotgunning was never really my style.

Here's my personal easy Vanguard Insanity strategy: Die 5 times on a given map sequence until you memorize the optimal path for a Vanguard to charge through without getting owned, then talk to my friends about how awesome Vanguards are.

Pretty decent OP. I love Barrier as my bonus ability on my Insanity Vanguard. It's great when you just finished off an enemy and need to run for cover. Hitting Barrier buys you enough time to find cover and evaluate the situation before Charging off again.

Hahahaha ... nice sentiment. Applicable only on Insanity though.

Well, you probably won't really die THAT much unless you get that bloody "I can't get a lock" glitch (what I'm too close to my target?!) ... or when a door suddenly opens up BEHIND you and you had no forewarning ... ouch.

Plus I'm sure I died more than 10 times trying to charge everything in sight on the collector ship ... stupid platforms.

Vanguards ARE extremely fun to play though. Awesome ... I think they can clear rooms fastest, and end missions fastest. I finished up maybe 10% faster on my Vanguard playthrough as compared to my next fastest playthrough.

Try using more shockwave with SMG/assault rifle for long distance and some medium distance combat though to soften up enemies. Since you can cast shockwave from behind walls, use it to your advantage by strafing around a high cover throwing shockwaves and shooting staggered enemies.

Heavy shockwave with all of the biotic upgrades(damage/cooldown) combined with champion is highly spammable for battle of attrition or any unsafe charge areas since it does some damage to barrier/shield/armor plus it staggers non-heavy opponents for 2 seconds.

Don't bother using too many points in pull unless you're going against husks (respec to area pull in this case). Pull's not that useful for a vanguard in most situations unless you want to do a warp detonation.

@Sereaph- Dude. If you don't like charging into an enemy and shotgunning him in the face then you're playing the wrong class.

@Spyndel- Sounds like someone fails at Vanguard. At least you chose the right picture.

Meh, it vacillates between way too easy, and frustratingly random.

If I use Tactical pause on Insanity, its way too easy, I can pick targets unerringly , and charge through the level so fast, choking off spawnpoints, it feels sort of pointless.

If I play entirely in real time, like I try to, the experience is too random, because if I charge ahead , sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.  If I hang back more conservatively, I can pick charge targets more opportunistically, but if youre not charging aggressively as a Vanguard, you're just being a sort of watered down adept.  So it ends up coming down to more of a trial and error exercise, more about memorizing the level than actually playing the game. Not to mention, if youre always charging, it absorbs all your focus and the whole game becomes about that, and I feel like a sort of one trick pony, missing out on team strategy.

I can see why some people like it, but I'm not good enough to play in real time on Insanity without feeling like Im just memorizing the level, instead of actively reacting to a given situation.
