I only made 2 playthrough in ME1, both also decided to stop the enemy as 1st priority.
What happen if decision is made to save the Council?
I missed the part in ME1 at end if decide to save the Council...

Some dialogue with the Council, aliens will treat you differently at points. Assumes Shepard is more of a Paragon

The Alliance looses 8 cruisers, which is nowhere near as bad as what the Turians and Asari lost. The Council is saved and Sovereign is still defeated.
Choosing the "concentrate on Sovereign" options makes the Council die, but the Alliance doesn't lose any ships until the battle with Sovereign.
