Installing to the HDD from the start would have kept it fine :P

and how has this happened exactly?

Console or PC? Always curious about topics like this as since the inception of cd/dvd's, I have never once had a faulty, defective disc nor have I ever broke one....

That's why I keep my discs in a protective sleeve (in those cases you can hold like 30 CDs) because it seems like you can break your disc getting it out of the CE case.

With full knowledge of how dishonest people can be, don't blame Gamestop.  Yes, there is a 30 day warranty, but most actual defects mature within the first few days of purchase.  Fracturing discs can happen as a production defect requiring usage over time to mature, but it also can occur through neglect and mistreatment by the user.

I believe it is a practice for some game publishers to full replace discs at low cost provided either proof of ownership or shipping/supplying the broken disc.
