Do you have to be "nice" to LIs during missions/non romance talks?

Currently, I'm playing a Paragon Shepard who's being generally nice and friendly to everyone, and consequently will probably have no issues with getting into whatever pants catch his fancy. However, for my next playthrough I was intending to make a Renegade female Shepard and romance either Garrus or Thane.

The problem is that I would love to just choose all the ****y retorts during missions etc (e.g. "Stop with the mopey crap!") but I'm worried that this will put the kibosh on any chance of romance. I know that some of the romance dialog IS actually Renegade, and I can probably pick that out when the time comes ("Hmm, guess that's the flirt with Garrus choice!") but I'm wondering if there's any room for experimentation and Renegade responses outside of the outright romantic conversations (e.g. dialog prior to romance, the recruitment mission, the loyalty mission)

I know that the safe bet (as well as the obvious bet) is to just be nice to them, but that will mean repeating a lot of the same dialog/scenarios as my current Paragon maleShep has gone through. Not to mention that it won't really fit with how I envision the character ("I'm a complete rampaging **** queen EXCEPT whenever I start speaking to Thane, at which point I become sweet and encouraging." lolwut?)

Also, quick confirmation: I know that it's possible to romance characters after the end of the game, but do you still get the scene where the LI comes to your quarters, or is that only part of the plot enroute to the last part of the game (ie like Ilos in ME1)?

People tell me that as long as you are good to them on the ship and when meeting them initially that all should be well.

That's not too bad, I suppose. I think part of the problem is that I want to play a Renegade Shepard (because hey, it's different than the first playthrough) but Garrus and Thane are both so, I dunno, weirdly sweet? Caring? Deep? that I'm not sure how Renegade I can even bring myself to be towards them (perhaps I should go for Jacob for a Renegade femShep XD). Hence why I'm wondering what the balance is, whether Renegade dialog with them will turn them off/make the relationship more of a "fling", etc. Would like to be at least somewhat nasty but warm up to them over time, or something.
