So, wait, people from other cultures aren't allowed to co-opt words and phrases from ours? Crap, we better give back all those English loan-words. Everyone should adopt the French model, and have an official list of words and phrases and how to use them, and anyone who doesn't use them correctly should be punished. Heavens forbid that some alien, or foreigner, or whatever try to flatter aspects of our culture by integrating parts of it into their own speech patterns or behavior! How dare they!

Tell me, OP, do you actually read any of the crazy stuff that comes out of your fingers before you hit send?

I've got nothing against the guy, and I suppose he might have been fine as a different character, but I have to agree with the original post. Something about his voice and mannerisms just scream out "not quarian" to me. It's like if BioWare had Woody Allen play a krogan... total mismatch of voice talent to character. I also just found his character kind of pointless and over the top, but that's me.

And having him play male Shepard... no way. Shepard is a big enough douchebag as it is.

Adam Baldwin's voice acting single handedly saved the Quarians from being forever known as a race of space ******. But, if it bothers you that much just stay in cover and the Colossus will eventually change targets and kill him.

Different accents is not the issue, it's the fact that he acts exactly like a US space marine right down to using US military jargon.

You know what? Explain how Asari planets and Turian built prison ships have all their signs and screen information in English and then we'll talk about aliens using US military jargon.

I was originally disappointed when I started meeting quarians that did not have Tali's distinctive gypsy-esque accent, but... well, I guess I got over it. Once it was clear the quarians could have any accent just as a human could, then Adam Baldwin was easier to accept doing the sort of role that he always does. I love Kal'Reegar's "Keelah Selai!"

Oh noez!  Marines in other cultures having a "Lets get the job done and kick some ass!" attitude!

Your only valid complaint is the "Hooah!"  and um...really?  You're gonna complain about one word?  I mean you really gonna **** over every little detail?

I never said it was a huge issue, I am nitpicking no question about it but it's still seems rather silly for a Quarian to speak like that.

That is not the only example.  The Quarians on the flotilla using military salutes and the flotilla having english writing on the walls seems a bit far fetched.

The reason why we have words borrowed from French is because English and French are related having both descended from Latin.

Why in the Hell would the Quarian language share anything in common with English?

Whoa, bad idea to bash Baldwin. Kal'Reegar is a forum favorite, as is Baldwin.
Hell hath no fury like a Baldwin scorned.

Pretty sure Jayne is too...

On a completely unrelated note, I demand that Kal achieve the rank of "Hero of New Canton" in ME3, make it happen, Bioware.

Kal just sound funny because they didn't quarianize his voice up. It's like they didn't pass it through that muffly wavering filter that all the other quarians have. Or maybe Baldwin's voice just isn't susceptible to such filtering.

The truth deserves to be quoted.

I swear, if I see another Little Orphan Annie quarian being all downtrodden in ME3...

Tali'Snorah was bad enough, with the constant need for rescuing. But all these other "downtrodden" vermin too, on every Hub world there was a "downtrodden" quarian in need of rescue...

Because a sentient race of beings that both look and act relatively similar to humans can have nothing in common with them whatsoever,

This is ridiculous anyways, Quarians can sound however BW decides to make them sound. If they have multiple accents, they have multiple accents.

Wait a second, Busomjack. You're blaming Adam Baldwin for saying "Hooah" as a quarian? Did it ever occur to you that Adam Baldwin did NOT write his character's lines? I'm pretty sure one of the Bioware script writers decided that a quarian should say Hooah, not Adam Baldwin. Unless you've got proof that Baldwin ad-libbed that line?

Baldwin made Kal'Reeger the most bad-arse quarian in the galaxy.

I would never call someone who I've never met a douchebag.  But he does sound an awful lot like one.  Sorry.

The first time I saw him on Firefly, my douchebag detection meter seriously went off the charts.

I also don't really get why so many people think the quarians are "space ******" unless they run around with rocket launchers and feel the need to remind you every time you talk to them that they don't know much about nothin', they just point and shoot.  Personally, I find smart and deadly characters like Mordin more badass.  And what, exactly, is not badass about Tali?  She blows up geth by the hundreds, and is the only one on her team who managed to not get killed, including Reegar (unless you save his sorry ass).

So why is it so hard to believe that the translator is, you know, translating some Quarian macho charge term that is the equivalent of "hoorah"?

Quarians have practically become the galaxy's garbage collectors....perhaps there is a use for them afterall.
