ME1- old man having trouble!

an older gamer at age 63!
I’ve played quite a few games on different systems over the years
albeit I’m by no means a hard core gamer but just enjoy them occasionally. I
recently purchased both ME1 & 2 as I figured it would be more enjoyable to
play the ME1 first before I got into ME2. (Xbox)
Anyway, to the point of my question on ME1 as I am somewhat confused
which seems to be getting a tad easier for me as I older. Perhaps I rushed too
much through the game as I only did a few side missions/jobs which did not
include going to any of the other planets other than those which are required
to complete the main mission. I’m currently at the end and in the midst of
fighting Saren after he transforms from being killed and having one hell of a
difficult time. I’m at level 36 (whatever that means or for what it’s worth). I’m
using the Tsunami VI assault rifle but I’m not at all sure what ammo I should
be using? The ammo I have available is: Cyro VI, Shredder VI, Proton VI and
Polonium VI. I assume that Saren is no longer organic so what is best to use? I’ve
also read suggestions in the book (which I’ve only given a cursory look over from
time to time) and an Internet walkthrough which suggests using: Lift,
Singularity, Warp and Neural Shock. I have absolutely NO idea what any of those
are or even if I have them! Are any of them some type of ammo and how do you
access them? I got a bit frustrated and
gave into going into the woos mode (casual mode difficulty) and I still can’t
seem to beat this sucker. I found a pillar to hind behind and shoot, hide and
shoot again and finally managed to inflict some damage on him (it?) and got to
the cut scene of all the ships fighting, but after that, Saren seems to come at
me with a vengeance (shoots more often) and I’m toast. Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated
and some info on those recommended uses of Warp, Singularity, etc. and where
they are (if I even have them) and how to access them and use them. Sorry if
these questions sound somewhat ignorant but….there it is anyway!

What class is your character and who do you have with you?

As for ammo type... It's hard to say. Sovereign/Saren isn't weak to any particular ammo type. You just have to keep hitting him whenever you get the chance.
As I recall, Sovereign Saren has a pattern whereby he jumps around a ton, finds a wall to adhere too, and then just pummels you with rockets. Staying behind cover whenever he's shooting is the best course of action. Otherwise, a biotic squadmate casting Lift right when he starts shooting will suspend him in mid-air for the duration of the cast, giving you a prime opportunity to hit him with everything you've got.
After the cutscene showing humanity hitting Sovereign hard, Sovereign/Saren's shields fully recharge. Yeah, it's a pain in the neck to have to deal with that. Overload helps a lot against his shields, and Sabotage helps prevent him from shooting rockets. Use them wisely.

Dethaterr wote…
They're biotic powers. Kadian, Liara and Wrex would have
'em. They also maul the final boss, if you have Liara and Wrex you can keep
throwing the poor turian bastard around the room the whole fight.
Regrettably, I lost Wrex on Virmire. He had to be shot and I
believe Ashley did the dirty deed as I could not bring myself to do it as I
really started to like the fat gruff Krogan! lol Anyway, I finished the fight but it was a 50 minute
shoot out with firing, taking cover, getting off more shots, overkill, shield
boost, rinse and repeat. When it was over I couldn’t get the damn controller out
of my hand from its death like grip! I was fighting the last sequence with
Ashley and Garrus so maybe not the best
choice.

Generally when you're at loss at the start of the game,
reading the manual for starters might be a good idea. I'm not being sarcastic
here, either. People, myself included forget way too often why the manual is
there.
Yep, you’re absolutely right. This was just one of those
games that I simply loaded in and went for it. Normally I do a bit of research
in the book but you know us guy’s….we NEVER read instructions.

Hide behind that pillar and try to shoot him from there.
Yes, there happened to be a large metal like pillar that
offered great cover from his attacks and that is where I spent the entire 50
minute battle.

Wait, aren't we forgetting something here? Hail to the
veteran!
Goth Skunk wrote…Veteran? Veteran of what?
lol …..Well, I suppose technically I’m a veteran as I spent 18 months
in Viet Nam back in 1966 – 67.
I’m also a bit of a veteran as to video games in some ways.
I had the first video game which was “Pong” and quite a few game systems since
then from the first Atari, Magnavox, Intellivision, Coleco (whatever it was
called), Turbo Grafix and on and on through PS1 & 2 and now the Xbox. I can
play a few games intensely for a time and then I’ll simply tire of it and not
play another video game for perhaps up to 4 to 6 months or so. I just recently
finished AC1 & 2 but I played the second game first. Thoroughly enjoyed
both of them but AC 2 was the better of the two.
Well, now that I just finished ME1 I suppose I’ll go on to
ME2 and I’m looking forward to it. This time I’ll take much more care in ascertaining
more info i.e. game instructions, etc. before
I dive in and get myself in a corner again! Hey…I’ve been in worse situations back
about 40 plus years ago! Just wish I had a Tsunami rifle back then. Now THAT would
have been fun. Well, at least better!
Thanks again for all of the prompt replies with my imbecilic
question(s). That’s why forum sites are so great (well….most of the time). I’m on several and I also own and operate one
so I know full well how it can get at times with people who love nothing more
than to be out and out ass wipes but I can easily spot them, as well as my
moderators, a mile away after all these past few years.
Just one more question as long as I’m here. Now that I’ve
finished ME1 will any of my info be transferred to ME2? I’m not referring to
weapons, upgrades, etc. but …..anything? Just curious but probably not of any
importance.

Lift, Singularity, Warp, and Neural Shock are all powers. i'm guessing your a soldier so you can't use them but teammates like Liara, Kaiden, Wrex, Tali or Garrus will have powers that effect your enemies in different ways. hold the right bumper for a 360(idk what it is for the PC) to bring up your powers and select them from the top left or right corner.(the bottom is yours).
Sabotage will stop him from attacking for a while and Lift or singularity make him float around and be helpless for a few seconds. Overload damages his shields. Neural Shock makes him fall down for a few seconds, and Throw knocks him back if its upgraded high enough. just spam those at him and shoot the hell out of him and you can hopefully kill him

seem to get this solved.
As I said, I finished ME1 and I figured that I would then go
on to ME2, which I’m looking forward to, but I decided to play ME1 again before
I do so. The reason being is that I feel I missed out on a few things due to my
not having taken the time to read more on it. However, I’m still having the same
problem as I did the first time I played it and that has to do with those
containers that you find throughout the course of the game which need to be
decoded via the controller’s X,Y,B & A buttons (Xbox). No matter which button I hit and no matter
how fast I do it, it immediately[/b]
says that I failed! I mean WTF, just what hell are you supposed to do exactly? In
the ME1 game guide book it says; “When
presented with a mini-game, a separate HUD interface displays on the screen and
correlates to your four main controller buttons X-Y-A-B, which must be pressed
in time, and in the order displayed, during the task”[/b]. I’ve tried to promptly hit the highlighted
button on the HUD display to no avail! What displayed order as I never get a chance to see any
order whatsoever? I don’t mind solving a puzzle here and there but at least
give me more than a millisecond[/b] to do
so! This is really getting frustrating and I’m tired of always having to revert
to my Omni-Gel to open them all.
Also, I still occasionally run across something that says, “Decryption
to Low” or, something of that sort. Most obviously I, as Shepard, can’t decrypt them so here is
my other question.
I’ve been giving two of my crew, Tali and Liara,
a full complement of upgrades as to “Decryption” and “Electronics” and always
bring one or the other with me on a mission. Just how do you go about having
one of them accessing these blasted devices and computers where you must have
full decryption available to access them?

About Decryption and Electronics: as long as someone in your party has the master version of a skill, you'll be able to decrypt/open whatever is associated with that skill, so you should always try to have party members with maxed versions of both. Your Shepard doesn't need to have them as long as a party member with you does. Your teammates can't actually open them, they just give you the skills to do it.

confused as to the large containers that require Decryption abilities. If, for instance, I have a team member with me
such as Liara who, has full Decryption and Electronics, how do I go about
having that member decrypt something? Is it just automatically done or is it
that something that is on the Talent Wheel? What I mean is that seeing I’m the
one standing by the item that needs to be decrypted how do I go about doing it?
Hope this question makes sense!

Aslong as u have someone in your active party that has a high enough decryption/electronics skill u dont need to do anything except engage the target crate/safe/etc.. like normal.
When u go to decrypt something the game looks at every active character in ur party to see if any of them have a high enough skill, if one of them does then the decryption mini game will start automaticlly. If they dont then it will say u dont have a high enough skill.

Up till that point I treated it like a shooter and since I mostly play on casual for the story I didn't have so many problems. So yeah us younger people don't always know how to use our games to the fullest extent anyway lol.
Oh and Grandaddy if your going to play again before ME2 I'd suggest you do the New Game+ feature, so you can save Wrex
Trust me, the powers system in ME2 are easier then in ME1 and the minigames are far nicer in ME2 then the simon says button combo of ME1.

Also, I managed to get FULL 100% Reneagade already early in the game! Some kind of glitch/cheat in the game?
When I raided the office of Lorik Qui'in to access his computer and returned to him I simply asked him certain questions
(renegade), stopped, returned, and and went through the same questions repeatedly and kept getting 25 renegade points each time I did it until I was at 100%! Should prove to be interesting.
After I'm finished playing ME1 again I'm really looking forward to ME2.

Y'kinda have to, if you recruit him. You can avoid shooting him by either having high Charm/Intimidate or doing his personal assignment, and finding his family's armor. Both lead to him surviving, if you so wish.Grandaddy63 wrote...

P.S.: If it is very important to you that he lives, I recommend saving on your ship before the Virmire mission, and if you end up killing him, you can reload the save and work on trying to save him.
(P.P.S.: His scene in ME2 is fairly awesome, w/o giving to much away. It is worth keeping him alive in ME2. And it ain't fat it's LEAN MEAN KROGAN MUSCLE.)
