My disappointment with Mass Effect 2.

I played the original Mass Effect, gripped by the compelling story, marvelous characters, engaging main quest missions, hours of sidequests, etc. It was the perfect game for me, and as such, I had high hopes for Mass Effect 2.
Until I bought it, new, and started playing.
I quickly realized this was not the same experience. I did not experience any wonderment or joy at what I was doing. I honestly felt I was playing a watered down third person shooter.
I thought to myself why this was so. Was it that the universe was already familiar to me, and thus, unable to reinvoke those same feelings?
Definitely not.
I realized development decisions on how to structure the game are what marred Mass Effect 2 for me. It did not have the long, engaging plot missions the first one had. Don't tell me the reason is because you spend the time recruiting - if thats the case, then why bother recruiting at all? It's an unexcusable justification to throw small, short, unengaging, and ultimately, uninteresting missions at the player. Completely linear, a definite start, a definite finish. No exploration, nothing. The entire time, I felt I was being herded to my ultimate goal. & In an RPG, that is unacceptable.
I never felt like my choices really mattered, either. Not to bring up any spoilers, but there was a side mission (not a loyalty quest) where you are forced to choose (through a menu) whether to save X or B. Having made my selection, the mission was over. I felt no consequences as the result of my actions. None.
Even on locations such as Illium or Omega, I felt trapped, constrained. These locations did not have the same touch or care spent on them as say, Feros or Noveria. Not to say they don't look good - aesthetically, the game is spot on.
How am I supposed to care about Jacob's issues during his loyalty missions if it is so direct, so linear, like a rat through a maze? Or anyone else's for that matter. Some of the characters I would even go so far as to say they are underdeveloped, their loyalty mission felt like a side quest and nothing more.
It is my hopes for Mass Effect 3 you return to the RPG style of Mass Effect 1... But I'm just one person. My $60 won't be enough to deter you guys from doing whatever it is that you are doing... clearly you appealed to some demographic. But do you really want the Mass Effect franchise to sink into mediocrity for the sake of appeasing shooter fans?
I've gotten to the end of ME2... and truth be told, after my forty hour campaign.... I could care less about ME3.
This was not so after ME1... I couldn't wait for the sequel. I was excited, couldn't wait to find out about what was happening in that universe.. only to be given ME2 - let down of the year.
I urge you guys - fight the temptation to dumb down the experience. Make ME3 the best of the franchise yet, with no concessions to TPS fans - ME1 was great because story was king. Immersion was the key. Did not exist in ME2.
Also - forum browsers, if you want to disagree, feel free. However, note that I didn't flame, use names, etc, just expressing my disappointment with the game.

...........TPS..............dumbed down............................no inventory.............
ammo........casual players.......dumbed down..........dumbed down...............no mako..........
dumbed down................shooter..................not rpg....................shooter fans...........dumbed down.
Therefore, Bioware, because of my completely original well thought out criticisms (refer to above), I urge you to ignore the millions of copies of Mass ffect 2 that you've sold and the early Game of the Year nomination and go back to the drawing board in order to make a game that I like because as you should know by now, your game may be receiving universal acclaim but until you get my knowledgable seal of approval, it is still juvenile, dumbed down and mediocre.

Meh, I like them both for their own great reasons. Hopefully BioWare combines the good in both ME 1 & 2 for ME 3.

Really? Because Feros, Noveria, Virmire, the Citadel were free-roaming? Every Bioware game is linear in its level design. The freedom comes from your choices. ME 2 levels aren't more linear. They are as linear as ME 1. The only difference is that in ME 2, the levels are more focused and fast paced. You don't run around for ten minutes before encountering enemies or a story element like Noveria where it was: drive for six minutes, shoot missle tower, drive for five minutes, shoot geth, drive for five minutes, cutscene.
ME 2 wants to guide you into intense firefights and keep you moving, they want the levels to be intense and they were. Freedom's Progress, Horizon, and the Collector Base were all sizable and long.

Huh? Fast paced intense action is NOT what RPG's are about. They should be slow paced with huge inventories to navigate through.
Don't forget about taking five hours real time to travel from place to place, and having to remember to drink water!

I'd say the battles in ME 1 atleast had some flanking routes insead of the always attack from the front you get in ME 2.
I remember there were chances to flank in me2, they were just less obvious.
