You're vastly underestimating the relevance of strength in actual real fight, and the average difference of strength between men and women.
I am talking about men and women who are trained combatants, and with a little martial skill of my own I know that I can be owned by a guy half of my size with no problem, when he's the master in his field.
You can be owned by a guy half your size if he's
considerably better in technique than you are - or considerably stronger for his size, because size is certainly relevant in strength, but it doesn't tell the WHOLE story.
But even with a substancial difference in technique, strength is still relevant, and is a MAJOR element.
People often tend to downplay it because they either are very influenced by action movies with people jumping everywhere (a martial artist doesn't jump everywhere, those who do this are acrobats, not fighters ; the insanely agile ninjas are so prevalent because they are much more spectacular and they flatter the "David against Goliath"/"big guy vs the surprisingly able underdog" idea), or because they imagine an UNtrained strong man against a VERY WELL trained athletic opponent.
But between two "somehow trained" people, the stronger has a very distinct advantage. And the AVERAGE woman is MUCH, MUCH weaker than the AVERAGE man.
Of course, all this doesn't change the fact that FemShep can break someone in half with a hand tied behind her back, not that a trained, athletic woman can perfectly break your ribs in a single well-placed punch or kick. As I said above, people have a lots of trouble differenciating "correlation/statistics" with "intentions" or "particular examples".
