1) 40 per cent of gamers are women. That's 4 out of every 10. Do you believe that's the case? Maybe you do. I'm not asking for proof from you. Just asking whether you believe that's the case.

And if the answer is "yes", then I ask, what do you think the numbers are if we focus on shooter and shooter/rpg hybrids like Mass Effect?

Maybe their numbers include lots of Wii group/party-type gamers and I'm just woefully uninformed. I freely admit that may be the case. Heck, maybe those numbers are based on shooter/rpg numbers alone and I'm even more out of touch. I'm going to research it myself. But I'd like to know whether they sound right to you.

I think you have to consider that this study wants to proove a point, that there are more female 'gamers' than most people think, but I have no doubt that the lines of what a 'gamer' is become blurred to benefit the study.  I know a lot of girls whose 'gaming' is restricted to puppy games on the DS.  Sure, they are playing games, but they are far from gamers.  Then you have girls that have multiple consoles, Gold Subscriptions, buy Collector's Editions of their favorite games, start video game clubs on their campuses to hold Halo tournaments and red vs blue marathons, and vow that they can die happily once they complete the Mass Effect trilogy...u know those awesome girls.  No one in particular. Posted Image

Oh yeah, I forgot, the ones who buy hoodies from their favorite game and feel like a beast while wearing it even though it cost just as much as said game...*sigh*  I love my N7 hoodie.

Hi Soma,

First, we need more women like you!

Second, my entire reason for harping on this is to underscore that the study does, indeed, have a big point to prove -- and for those reasons, I strongly doubt the validity of what the numbers are trying to say. And you hit the nail on the head, I'm almost certain they're playing fast and loose with what constitutes a gamer.

Then again, I could be wrong.

Garrus.

Garrus, as hunky and awesome as he is doesn't work for several reasons.

1.  He's not human, but that's not an issue, just an issue as far as this thread is concerned.

2.  He really is like my femshep's brother.  And after watching his romance scene, it is just too awkward in the end...

I try my best.  True female gamers are awesome and rare, so I take pride in being one.  That being said it does bother me when they try to make these claims.  It just seems so fake, and I worry that more and more games will take notice of these types of studies and change accordingly.  Not all games work when considering a female aspect.  Mass Effect is indeed one of the greats, but that doesn't mean I want the option to be a female in Gears of War 3.

I don't want the industry to change.  I love my macho games.  But games attempting to please the true female gamers, like mass effect, are rare and I love them more because of it.

And we all know that Tali has a crush on FemShep.

That's an assumption. I'd say the fact that Kelly does not say that Tali has a crush if Shepard is female is evidence enough that Tali does not feel the same way about female shepard that she does about male shepard.

Jacob is supposed to be the hunky male character. Its your fault you don't like Black men.

It's not that he's black. It has to do with the romance primarily, which many have said reads like pornography. I'm sure his personaltiy is important as well, Jacob isn't exactly new and exciting compared to Garrus and Thane.

I play as a femshep so there will be a total of 4 female humans on my squad once Kasumi enters the picture, which has me a little annoyed.

There are only 2 male humans, and neither of them are interesting at all.  Jacob just doesn't do it for me and Zaeed is an old dude with a jacked up face...so I have come to the conclusion for why there is no hunky human man on my squad to fill the male equivalent gap of Miranda...

it's because maleshep is that hunky guy, which sucks considering he doesn't exist in my Mass Effect Universe.  I'd totally be all over maleshep if he was a character in my crew.  He's hot.  But its like they didn't want another hunky human male taking the limelight away from Male Shepard so instead we get a ton of sexy human females and no hot human males...you know, so the maleshep won't feel awkward when he has to pull Miranda off of the hot vanguard in the port observation...

don't get me wrong, I love thane and he's super smexy, and this isn't really a romance thread at all, I just feel as a woman, that I'm getting the short end of the stick in terms of eye candy on the Normandy.  The only other human male is Joker, who is adorable, but he can barely walk...that's not sexy. lol. Not to mention all the female aliens look hot while some the male characters are total, well, aliens...

anyways, my two cents :wizard:

Sounds like what you really want is another human male LI.

I agree. Not that I'm against any alien lovin but as someone else already pointed out, the alien romance options for a femshep just seem so...alien, while the female aliens have the perfect female physique and closely resemble humans.

To be fair, we've only seen female Asari and quarians. I'll agree that the Asari are basically humans with blue skin and head tentacles, but we don't know what Quarians look like under the suit. Turians, Drell, Asari, and Quarians are all humanoid, anyway.

I wish we would have seen more of Kaidan in ME2.

I'm certain that those who romanced Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara will get a great romance in ME3. in be4 people complaining about ME2

Saying she had a crush was not kinky or sexual. She is in awe of Shepard and has very strong feelings on the level beyond friendship but not sexual in nature. The way she said it and then got all embarrassed about it left me to think it was more than friendship but not quite like she wanted to jump me.

I don't think she has a crush.
a) It's probably just sloppy editing. There were some lines recorded for a Tali and Thane gay romance, but they were both never completed as they decided these characters aren't bisexual.
B) Linking suits isn't necessarily sexual. Tali is just being awkward. Being awkward around the same sex =/= bisexual or crushing. Tali makes it pretty clear if you're playing as male shepard that she would hate for shepard to think that linking suits is always sexual or intimate. I could see myself getting embarassed if my words were or could likely be misconstrued as being sexual or romantic when they actually aren't.
c) Tali doesn't appear to have had many friends, if at all. People treat her like the Admiral's daughter and either be incredibly polite to her because of that or be jealous, expectant, or unappreciative of her because of that. People have gotten somewhat emotional over their friends before, it doesn't mean it's a crush.

Humm, let me check the opportunities

Mass Effect 1 - Men
- Ashley : if you like the Women soldier type. No thanks
- Liara : my cute Liara, love her.

Mass Effect 1 - Women
- Kaidan : his personnality makes him a lot more interesting than crush me I'm Ashley !
- Liara : I agree, Asari looks like female.

Mass Effect 2 - Men
- Miranda : cheer leader kind of girl. It's a nice choice.
- Tali : Very interesting character, but you never see her face.
- Jack : that's not really a woman. Can't do more ugly. And she's psychotic. Don't really call it a choice.

Mass Effect 2 - Women
- Jacob : The soldier. He's pretty cute too.
- Garrus : I agree, he's not cute, but he is a Turian. Difficult to make him cute...
- Thane : he is a drell, but is quite a gentleman and as cute as an alien can be.

From my point of view, on ME2, I see no difference. Males and Females have their human pair (Jacob / Miranda). Males and Females have their ugly pair (Garrus/Jack). Males and Females have their alien pair (Tali/Thane).

I see no reasons to complain.

Nah. I am good.

Another human male LI could be even worse.  BW do many things good, human males LI are not among them. Starting with Anomen (just...no comment...), ending  with Jacob aka the priiize. Alistair and Sky are in minority of good leading human males created by BW IMO. I don't know if I could face another Carth/Kaidan/Anomen/Casavir...Nah. I am good.

On the other hand Zaeed could be interesting.

I completely agree with you on Zaeed, seriously this guy is full of win .
I would have liked to hear more stories from him .
And I already liked Mandalore in the KOTOR series, kinda reminds me of him

How are there more females than males?

Females:

Ashley

Miranda

Jack

Males:

Kaiden

Jacob

Zaeed

Kasumi might not even be released so she doesn't count. Your numbers are way off.

I love Kaidan, he's my favourite character by far, but a sexy renegade type human male would be a great addition to the crew, as opposed to another human female. A romanceable Canderous type would have been awesome and, well, more eye candy is always welcome (ME2 was pitifully low on it for me).

I totally wish Zaeed was an LI.  I think he is sexy and interesting and he doesn't need to be fixed.  Older men are hot.

Oh the age is not the issue with Zaeed.  Older men are super hot, I mean I think Tim Roth is the hottest man alive, but a lazy discoloured eye and a giant scar are not attractive imo.  Unless, well, you're a Krogan.

Well considering you can't really even converse with Zaeed, he doesn't really count in the total as far as I'm concerned...plus he's not even there if you don't get the DLC.  So take him and Kasumi out and it's still off...

You want to know why all the romances for women are not as good as for men? Because most games are made by men, who obviously see things from a male perspective. If the women here don't like it then they should enter game development themselves so that the games industry actually has access to a wider breadth of talent other than young white males who will, surprisingly, write things from a young white male perspective.

Until then, it will be men writing it all, so get out there and do it women, your gender needs you!

Facts are, there are too many humans on our team period.

Kaiden
Ash
Miranda
Jacob
Zaeed
Kasumi
the entire Normany Crew in ME1 and ME2

While we only have 1
Qurian
Turian
Salarian

2 Krogan

and 2 Asari

I'd like to see a more aliens and far less humans in ME3.
