The galaxy cannot be saved by an underwear model. Real soldiers solve real problems.

Limited options at the time of the photo.

Anyways I demand a better voice actor too. Someone call Bruce Willis and ask if hes busy.

Jennifer Hale is SO much better than the male Shepard VO.

Mark Meer is fine!  And Jennifer Hale sucks, though that's not necessarily a bad thing...

I really don't understand why everyone complains about the male VO. I find it to be excellent, but on the other hand I'm not thrilled about the female version.

Edit: This thread should be moved to the general forum shouldn't it?

I think it depends on who you played through your first playthrough. I've noticed that people who started a femshep in ME1 ten to enjoy Jennifer Hale while mensheps enjoy Meer. I, personally, dislike Meer because he hardly adds any emotion to the dialogue. He can express anger, but it seems that his tone never shifts between the paragon and renegade options.

Jennifer Hale, on the other hand, does a good job at adjusting her tone to fit the scenerio. She could be empathetic towards Tali on her recruitment mission, Stern towards Kal'Reeger when she tries to stop him from getting involved, or cruel to the Salarian worker at the start of Thane's Dossier mission. Meanwhile, Meer tone sounds the same in all of these.

Here are some reasons that people don't like the male VA and/or prefer the female VA:

1. They like listening to women mimicking the Christian Bale Batman voice
2. They have a fixation with playing a female Shepard rather than a male Shepard and so automatically prefer that version
3. They have never heard a masculine male speak
4. They have never completed a playthrough in either game with a male Shepard
5. Complaints about gender inequality and backlash regarding the possibility of Shepard being female rather than male
6. Reading other complaints on forums and using them as pseudo-objective evidence for why Mark Meer is inferior
7. They like appearing contrarian (AKA internet hipsters)
8. Most arguments against them only serve to strengthen their resolve through indignance as there is no way to objectively prove any one voice actor is superior to the other and end up giving themselves mental "pats on the back" for defending [their pride and not] their viewpoint.

Why does everyone complain about the default Shep being a model, or being pretty or whatever? Do you honestly believe that armed forces in real life have no attractive people on active duty?

I can hear the drill instructor now - "God dammit you MAGGOTS are too damn PRETTY to be soldiers! You wanna get through boot camp? Your sorry ass better pray that someone beats you in the face with a spade!"

Besides, Miranda was in charge of rebuilding Shepard, you don't think she'd fix him up to be her lil doll?

Cause I'm a veteran? And nobody I served with was an underwear model?

Well there was this one guy but he was pretty much Don't Ask Don't Tell if you get my meaning.

But other than that, soldiers aren't pretty...except some of the female ones...and even those are few and far in between.

I'm also a veteran, and my anecdotal evidence counters your anecdotal evidence. While none of the guys I knew were underwear models, there were plenty of handsome men (yes I'm a guy, no I don't swing that way, but I'm secure enough in my manhood to recognize a handsome man) in the military. Hot women though? Good grief, in my 5 1/2 years in I can count the number of in service women I would have hooked up with on one hand.

Probably p. good matchmaking opportunities for ugly gals, with the limited amount of women around and all meaning less competition.

Everything you stated here is dead-on imo.  Including what you say about people playing a maleshep vs. femshep first.  Now...this is just my opinion, but I think this effect is probably stronger for male gamers simply because female gamers have to be desensitized in some form of manner to even be considered a real gamer due to the vast majority of games having male protagonists.  It's simply not as 'normal' or even comfortable for a lot of male gamers to even play a female character, let alone constantly listen to her and 'be' her in terms of decisions, etc.

Personally, I played FemShep first.  But I have also played this type of RPG before and have opted to play a male char. instead.  Right after I finished ME1, I created a maleShep for a 2nd playthrough.  And was appalled.  I had never before played a video game with such drab VA.  I wasn't comparing the two Shepards; I just wanted to have fun and play as a male like I have done in nearly ever other game I've ever played.  And I couldn't.  I got a third into the game and couldn't stand the cardboard dialogue (no offense to Mark Meer! :() and quit.  So it was awhile before I even tried maleShep on ME2.  When I finally did, I noticed he did get better and even had a few really nice VA moments, but was still a bit drab, especially in normal info-getting conversation.

This is something I don't get.  For such a big-name game, couldn't they have gotten someone...better?

Oh man, I have no idea how we got off-topic here.  One minute I was looking at the OP's pretty boy.  The next...

I started as a male Shep in ME1 and stopped the game on Eden Prime because of Meer's dreadful acting. - so for me it wasn't because I was used to a female Shepard. I can see someone not liking Hale but it's hard to deny that at least you are listening to an actual actress. The problem with Meer is he isn't an actor at all - he's a relatively unknown sketch comedy guy up here in Canada - and he isn't all that funny either - kinda painful if you ask me.

ManShep is good, dont be so wah wah. If you reallllllly have such a big issue with Mark Meer's voice acting stop playing him. I seriously dont understand why people complain about things that have no need to be complained about, is your game really ruined because you feel like you HAVE to play as FemShep?
