I'm not crazy about the male voice actor either. His voice sounds a little nerdy and the Canadian accent kills me.
Not everyone can have a deep "macho" voice. He sounds like a normal man, nothing more or less. I think that's what BioWare was trying to shoot for.
On another note, I really don't notice the Canadian accent. Are there any scenes in particular where it really stands out? I noticed that he seems to say "ween" instead of win during his speech during the last mission, but I don't notice anything else.
It's probably because I'm Canadian

True enough.
I've tried playing a FemShep multiple times but the deep voice turns me away every time. And sometimes it sounds like she's running out of breath at the end of some lines.

I'm relatively certain that his voice (and not necessarily Meer's VA capability) is what landed him the role of maleShep in the first place. "Macho" can be subjective and despite his Canadian lilt, his voice is very 'Americanized' in terms of tone and cadence--think Superman. He has a deep and throaty voice which you [i]will not[i] hear every day unless you watch a movie with an overly protective or heroic character. I think you've watched a lot of movies or played a lot of video games or something because his voice is not normal at all. I don't know a single guy with a voice even close to that. The best way I can describe his voice is 'velvet on rocks.' *Shrugs*

No offense intended. I definately notice the accent though.
Don't get me wrong. I'm realistic. I know they had to pick a voice actor that they thought would go over well with the masses and I think they did a good job. Samuel L. Jackson could deliver more memorable lines but I think that his voice probably wouldn't work for the majority of players lol. Hopefully, some day the technology will reach a level where there is room to record multiple voice actors for the main role; giving players a choice of how they want to sound.
One of my favorite lines in the game is when you do the renegade action to the mechanic before Garrus' recruitment mission. "You're working too hard" bzzzzz. Simple, funny, memorable.
