I'm playing as male dwarf warrior, party main tank. Before i started i thought i would get Leliana (for lockpicking, and romance, so her spot is safe), Wynne (for spells) and Shale (another tank to do heavy damage).

So far i have played over 7hours and just got Leliana. I'm planning going to get Wynne next, but i'm starting to think maybe Shale is not as good as Alister. I like Alister personality and all the interaction among party member, like his compat abilities and i'm starting to think i keep him over Shale.

Is Shale better as tank melee? Does he/she have good personality and party interaction (and plot interaction)? What i most like in Alister is his good nature...he may not be smartest guy, but he is good at heart...can Shale get too "cold"?

I did a 2H dwarven warrior as well. Shale is hilarious and survives combat much better than Alistair. It also does more damage and is versatile; its talents are split between four modes - ranged, attack, buff and defense/tank. You set the mode (it's a sustained talent) and you get access to just the other talents in that line and affect Shale's stats to make it more effective at that mode's role. Very cool, though I just keep Shale set on attack and it pounds everything into a fine red paste. Shale's weapons and armor also modify his abilities more than swords do for Alistair.

Alistair does have the edge once you get a good weapon with three rune slots, though that won't be for a long while in your game it seems.

I had Alistair as my tank for 3 ranged attackers since nearly the beginning of the game. Then I switched to Shale for the Mage Tower plotline and I have to say that Shale is definitely the better tank, DPSer and buffer in every way. Shale's Slam works very well with my Shatter-dependent party make-up. Shale has those crystals that can protect him from elemental damage. I tried taking a certain High dragon with massive firepower and with Alistair at 50% fire resistance, he couldn't take the heat. I switched to Shale and even at just 30% fire resistance, we took down the dragon with ease.

I'm only keeping Alistair in the party for now for his banter but Shale's is pretty good too from what I've seen.

Shale seems to hold threat better than Alistair. I think Shale is a better tank too. I might just not be building Alistair right, but DeepGray was right about his crystals. They really make a difference. I think his brilliant lightning armor crystal has "+15% chance to avoid attacks" and "chance to avoid missiles" on the same armor!

Shale is the ultimate tank, bar none.

Well, Shale is, after all, a walking rock creation.

Which is as close to a real tank as you can get.

In the beginning Shale is bar none the best tank you can have, but once you get to 14+ I think Alistair becomes better since he will have better utility while tanking (whereas shale has to switch between her different 'forms' for utility which creates delays and costs stamina, then include the stamina cost of the actual ability you want to use).

So anyway, Level 6 (end of lothering) to 13/14 Shale is better

14+ Alistair is better because of utility

Against High Dragon use Shale since she can't be eaten.
