Readership is low, and the few who are on hand are likely too impatient to waste time answering anything that has already been answered many, many times, so if you don't actually use the archives, and you do ask a common, oft-repeated question, you shouldn't anticipate any speedy reply.

When the weather turns nice, from late April and early May, forums such as this one start losing traffic and readership. By July, it's a mere fraction of its winter activity. Weekends detract from the numbers of people checking in even more, so the archives become the main way to get an answer.

If any new arrival is to have any hope at all of getting enough attention to encourage an answer via a real, current comment, he / she really needs to follow the established procedures, and fill in all of a proper problem report.

No information in = no answers back. Really simple.

From early May until mid October each year, forums similar to those here on this site go through an off-season slowdown, when they cannot compete with the attractions of other activities, and there are few visitors, but more seriously, few readers dropping in who may have answers.  The odds are already poor for getting answers in any kind of short interval, and leaving the needed data off means your question will be ignored by the few who do come by.

More people coming in today who aren't actually serious about getting answers to their questions, just wasting effort by skipping over the stickies (FAQs and How to Report a Problem).

The Stickies lead the way. The archives, though, are where it's really at.

Forum activity has begun to pick up somewhat, however, the majority of the experienced members have yet to begin showing up, and from a readership point of view, Fridays have always been slow.  Questions without data are unlikely to attract any attention, and questions that are just the same old thing as so many before, are going to be ignored because they are so boring.  Rely on the collection of FAQs, and the archives until next Tuesday or so.

Compared to more normal seasonal fluctuations, all of the forums on the site here seem very slow for this late in the fall. The ME3 forums had been at least somewhat busy, but it has seemed to me that the announcement about the DRM situation finally sank in, and the community lost interest.

Unless or until there are a few experienced game players with more patience than myself on hand, repeats of the same old questions already asked and answered so many times before are likely to be ignored, and the same goes for any questions that are too vague, and not supported by the needed diagnostic data.

You people need to use the Archives, and Kloreep's collection of FAQs, or you'll have nothing.

Kloreep went to a lot of trouble compiling the FAQs.  They are there to help you.  The Social site just didn't hold onto the community of gamers the way that the old Bioware Legacy site had done.  It seems that only ME-3 and the Off Topic forums have much activity any more, so between the Stickies and the Archives in here, those are your best way to get answers.

1. There are perhaps half a dozen experienced game players to drop in voluntarily here from time to time and answer questions, and between us, we just don't know every single answer. The forum archives are a different matter; everything that can happen has almost certainly been recorded there.

2. Neither Bioware nor EA were ever regular participants here. Now, they do not come at all. For official support, see their link at the bottom of every page.

3. Kloreep's FAQs list is very inclusive. Use it, it's meant to help you.

4. If the FAQs and archive don't do it for you, follow the "Read This" guide by Pacifien, to report. No information (compared to her guiding instructions) worth the definition will lead to your question possibly being ignored.

alright so mass effect 2 crashes every time I try to bring up the squad menu by hitting escape. I guess the things called the mission computer.
now the screen pops up most of the time but freezes immediately. then the game stops responding and windows closes it.
this happens every time I hit escape, without fail since I got the game.
everything else works buetifully on full graphics settings, cut scenes and game play. but when I hit escape to try and level up my squad the game crashes. this means one can't play the game.
Hoping thats enough. Frankly it makes no sense to me why I can play the video and game files but I the opening the menu crashes the game

Intel graphics are not supported by the game, and are only suitable for watching movies and making powerpoint presentations.

There is nothing that can be done to help you out of your situation, except for suggesting you buy a machine with a real GPU in it. Consider yourself lucky you are able to play the game at all.

hey the graphics are sweet. the game loads up just fine and plays at high graphics and never had any trouble with Dragon age 2. its only when I hit escape and bring up the menu (typically something that needs like no graphic capacity) dose it decide not to work. and you can't play the game without at least loading the menu at least once.
So any productive advice other than saying my brand new computer is junk.

You asked an unanswerable question, unless you want to know what WILL work, instead of what does not, you have to leave Intel graphics in the trash and move into the real world of 2008 & newer 3D graphics (Intel is a minimum of 3 1/2 years behind AMD and nVIDIA). It's a waste of time trying to be an Intel graphics fan, they do not care about you.

I didnt say it was junk, I said your system is not designed for playing games, especially games with intense 3d graphics. In case you didnt read ME2's system requirements before youpurchased the game or your computer, here they are direct from EA's Origin site for ME2.

Video Card: 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported Chipsets - NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater.
Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

Emphasis mine. Of course, there is alwaysthe caveat that if you do not like the free, unpaid, unofficial tech supoptr that is provided on these forums, you are more than welcome to go to EA's support pages and try your luck. I'll give you 3 guesses what they will tell you about your graphics.

far enough, Im not a fan of intel but I needed a heavy duty computer with a good warranty, if I had the luxury of coming home every night Id have a nice gaming desk top or better yet a mac, maybe Id even settle down and by an xbox. but I need to be able to run DOD software in a pinch and I need a computer that can survive everything up to literally an RPG attack, so my choice of machine was defined by that not what games I could play. though this is the first time its let me down in that regard. but Im off topic.

But the idea that its a graphics problem dosn't make sense that was my first thought to but I know what graphics issues look like. but here there is no lag in the gameplay or video and even if I dum down the graphics theres no change still pops up with the menu and the game crashes. It seems more like a glitch and there seems to be others with the same problem just no one seems to know how to fix it.

Almost the same thing Intel will say.  Intel integrated graphics are always behind the curve, they catch up later by making the hardware iterations down the road capable of limping along with popular software of yesteryear.

To be fair, if your machine has open PCI-E slots, you can upgrade your machine and shut off the Intel Graphics.  You can get a reasonably priced card that plays the game well.

The fact remains that you are running the game on substandard hardware that does not meet the minimum requirements. End of story.
If you want to argue against those who have spent years, or decades, working in tech support for various companies, and thus actually know what they are talking about, fine. If you are so convinced it a glitch that noone here knows how to fix, then by all means, go and deal with EA support for their "professional" assistance.

Myself, and more than likely Gorath as well, now consider this issue closed, as there is literally nothing that can be done to help you, as you refuse to listen to the facts.

Im a engineer I fix military hardware and heavy machinery in the middle of nowhere. my job is to argue with IT pros and ask how to fix the buggy piece of equipment with a screw driver and a prayer. my instincts go to the is there a way to fix this with what I got. and I tried EA support Ill probably hear back sometime next month at which point this problem will cease to matter to me.
so Im not being an ass Im simply asking people who definitely know more than me about these things if theres anything that can be done. its worked verry well in the past especially on this forum.

diebythesward that sounds well like an option if not the one Id prefer. out of curosity what would you recommend?

I would recommend an upgrade using that PCI-E slot.

Your instincts are correct, it is a bug, but it is not one that will be addressed or fixed by EA and Bioware.  They put that disclaimer on the games minimal requirements.  Down the road some number of years, Intel will release a new IGP, and with it a new driver that may address that bug, but that is the absolute best case scenario you can hope for.

AAA Developers design for mid to high powered rigs, ones with powerful discreet graphics from AMD or nVidia.  They will not include S3 or Intel in their QA or QC efforts.  Intel, doesn't particularly have the muscle to do graphics hardware design, and their software fixes to patch problems from their shoddy 3rd string graphics card efforts won't be timely enough to solve your problem.

Go on Newegg.com and search for an AMD/ATI or Nvidia video card in the $150 range, and you'll be able to run the game fine.  Remember, the more money you spend here means more time between upgrades, but the max you can realistically hope for is 5 years.  Make sure your power supply can handle the card you get.  For me, the sweetspot seems to be between $300 and $500 dollars, but other people like to roll cheaper or more expensive.  Sometimes two cards in SLI or crossfire (which requires special component selection regarding your mobo and PSU) can be cheap and powerful.

Its not even a bad idea at times to buy older gear that's better built, for instance, make sure whatever you get has a 256 bit memory bus and at least 1GB or RAM (not just for ME, but for other games you might want to play).

Folks, this is the end of this road. This is my thread, and it's been Off-Topic all afternoon and evening. Drop this line and get back to how the forum works, NOT anything else at all! I can have this thread erased and start it again if that's what it takes.

alright I will apologies didn't mean to hijack your thread. Id like to thank everyone for there help though.
But here is the answer to the unanswerable question.

I just wanted to post here so that people know I found the solution to the problem.
If your PC is running a Intel HD 3000 graphics driver, when you try to open the menu it will result in a crash and will bring you back to windows. there is however a solution that dose not require you to go out and by a new PC the solution is to use the older .2361 drivers.
you can download this from
http://www.wikidrive...MA_15.22.1.2361
once you install that the game will function beautifully. you can hit escape all day long and you won't crash to desktop
Thanks again everyone. See you around.
