Seriously, love interest aside - I'd rather not go captain Kirk on my Mass Effect - there are more than enough gamelay and story reasons for her to be a squad member:
- Powerful and experienced commando
- Can substitute Samara/Morinth if they died in Mass Effect 2
- Knows Saren, Sovereign, Benezia, Thorian, the Cipher etc. - enough for interesting dialogue options about the "good old times" from the original Mass Effect, besides fleshing her out as a character.
- She's hot + she's the only chameleon asari in the Galaxy!

Woulden't want her going all Tetsuo like the ending of Akira on us.OneBadAssMother wrote...
She did mention that her biotics are unstable... could be a twist in ME3...

Perhaps if Shepard spaced her in ME1, it will turn out that she miraculously survived. In ME3 she returns for revenge!
Only if the bullet to the head starts making her speak in a cockney accent and blow up a whole Feros colony just to make a point.
"I'll get you Shepard! I will too, I will!"

Thats why most people play renegade i would assume, to commit such actions, just for the sake of being a d-bag. Rather than handeling the situation rationally. I've long grown past the stage of always wanting to be dark and evil in my videogames, Yeah killing innocents in GTA and comitting other cruel acts was fun... when i was like 9... I allways thought that killing Shiala was the ugliest, most inhuman and despisable of all renegade options. She was the only adversary who truly regret her actions, surrendered entirely to Shepard and tried to make amends.

I don’t begrudge anyone from playing their game in any manner they find enjoyable; especially for making a decision that is intentionally included by the games authors. The player will however have to abide by the decision that they’ve made.
After finishing a main quest by defeating the Thorian, we have Shiala standing before the player waiting for us to decide her fate. I think the timing and the stark choice of life or death paint this as a seminal moment (much like the one with the Rachni Queen).
A seemly important decision like this would only be impactful if it had a consequence associated with it.
So far nothing of much consequence has happened as a result of this decision. Shiala does provide a side-mission on Illum but the game provides the player an alternate source if she is dead.
I therefore think Shiala’s presence on Illum only serves to further develop her character, suggesting to me that the decision to spare her has yet to bare its full fruit.
As the consequences of past actions are made clear in Mass Effect 3, players may regret earlier decisions they made. Fortunately for us all we can relive those choices if we so choose.

To be fair, I never could kill Shiala. I had to settle for a youtube video to say how it would play out.
To those that did: "How dare you, she's a nice lady."

Shiala could play a major part since she is the only known living person beside Shepard who could have accesss via the cipher to some prothean/thorian knowledge essential to bring down the reapers.
Having an entire race's Collective Unconciousness locked away in your brain seems fairly important, seeing as said race (Protheans) are responsible for many of leaps in galactic technology.
Seeing as Shiala and Shepard are the only one's alive who possess the cipher, I'm surprised a Cerberus hasn't tried to abduct her in order to extract said information (seeing as Shepard is either AWOL or too valuable to attempt a risky extraction) in order to further their understanding of Prothean technology.
Maybe possible side quest for ME3?

I mean, Saren is dead, the Thorian is dead, and Cerberus needs Shepard elsewhere.
Cerberus has no qualms with questionable extraction techniques, and the data could very well advance humanity's understanding of Prothean technology.
Would be an interesting mission if Shepard had to rescue her from a Cerberus Science Facility. Also, would serve highlight tension between Cerberus and Shepard.

Excellent idea! Would be a great post-ME2-plot-DLC or ME3-prologue to introduce her as a squadmate.

I'd imagine a sizable portion play Renegade to see how things play out differently, that the first play through if paragon, the second renegade. Though there's probably a lot of people who do it the other way around. But for me at least, my second play through was the renegade one, to see how things would turn out the other way around.
Of course, based on my knowledge from the first playthrough, I also decided his personality would be focused on pro-human with a dose of anti-alien added in. And, you know, I don't really like that part of him. Killing Shiala wasn't a nice thing, didn't like doing it, but, well, she acted against humanity and it was time to pay the piper from my renegade Shep's perspective and since she wasn't human...
Yeah, doing that made me personally feel unclean. The only action that made me feel worse was killing the Rachni Queen. That one I came closest to going back and changing.

The one time I dared to shoot her, I felt the same way. Her surrendering behaviour made it even worse than in case of the rachni queen - at least for me. In some way I guess it was like murdering an innocent because you could not blame her for actions under the influence of indoctrination. Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way.
