Well before my fresh install on windows 7 32 bit, dragon age origins never crashed. it worked flawlessy. Now however I updated my system to a 64 bit windows 7 and it constantly crashes with an error in DAO : stopped responding.

It is also the only game that has that problem.

Same problem here. Previously I've used windows 7 RC with no problems, not a single crash. After clean installing the win7 update 64bit it randomly starts crashing to the desktop.

I'm using the latest 10.2 drivers for my ati 4800 card, maybe going back to a previous version helps...I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

I'll try to run the game in vista compatibility mode, fingers crossed. Otherwise it's back to 32bit for me.

No luck either in compatibility mode. Anyone a suggestion?

I wish I had but no. Only thing that I can think of is trying 32 bit OS - Win 7 or Win Vista 64 bit. I know I didnt have any problems with Vista 64

This might work: http://social.biowar...8/index/1269766 I tried it and it looks like it helped though my first loading screen looked like this: Image IPB

Sadly, I crash like crazy on Vista 64 with my quad core system. I've tried all the "fixes," and setting the affinity to one core may work, but I lag so much the game in unplayable so I can't really test it.  I also have Nvidia cards - 280Ms in SLI, although I've tried the game without SLI as well.

If you have any mods disable or uninstall them also you can check social.bioware.com/forum/Dragon-Age-Origins/Dragon-Age-Origins-PC-Technical-Support/Crashing-Problems-in-Windows-7-SOLVED-1269766-1.html

I've been having this problem since I decided to upgrade my system from XP to Win 7 64bit. I contacted EA support and they said that this game wasn't tested on th 64 bit platform and would not answer if it ever would be. I tried every single "fix" they suggested and atleast 10 others from this forum with no luck.

I never had any issues with Origins but after installing Awakening both Origins and Awakening often crash or slow down to a crawl. Win7 64bit, Radeon 4850, i5 750 and 2Gb mem. Puzzled.

If it's a fresh install Windows 7x64 install, update your DX and C++ runtimes (you'll need the C++ 2005 and 2008, plus the x64 versions). Also make sure you're using the latest graphics drivers. That's solved most of my stability issues.

If you're running DAO 1.03, uninstall it, reinstall it but only install the 1.02a patch. It's not an ideal solution, but it should be playable, at least. Also make sure you fix the .exe following the instructions here:

http://social.biowar...-1835264-1.html

Also try setting affinity to CPU0 via task manager (seems to work for AMD cpus).

Minimum requirements - Intel Core 2, AMD X2. Hmm, both dual core and both 64bit capable. EA's explanation for failing to test it under x64 would be what, exactly? Not supporting XP x64, fair enough (I'm sure both people still running it will get over it). Not supporting Vista and 7 x64 is unforgivable in this day and age, especially when they neglect to mention it in the system requirements.

I've been running the game for 2 months on Windows 7 64 bit with no problems. So not everyone on windows 7 64bit is having issues.

I'm running an i7 920, with 2 GTX 260 in dual sli. Nvidia driver 196.21

I didn't have issues when I first installed it, but suddenly I started getting very quick and clean crashes to the desktop on my i7 950 quad-core with 8800 GTS 640 MB.

The system is fine, but the 64 bit Windows 7 has def caused problems, back with 32bit Vista I had no problems with this game, and while I was able to play through it, the crashes did hurt me a bit.

Recently, I just crashed on the Amgarrak beginning (right when you're about to get the control rod... so about 4 minutes into the game) and apart from that at least 30 cumulative crashes throughout the middle sections of Dragon Age Origins and the entirety of Awakening.

Sorry to revive this but it is a serious issue.

Since this is the same engine that Dragon Age 2 has, I'll not be buying it if I don't have diamond-hard guarantee of the stability of the engine in the new one... and I'm displeased with the current stability in this...

Everyone is switching to 64 bit now... time to fix things in a game that's a year old.

"Everyone" might switch if they do not play games, but game playing people with some forethought in their favor keep a copy of XP for insurance against this sort of thing. Regarding an older comment in this thread:

Awakening includes the 1.03 patch, which is (too frequently) incompatible with Vista / Window 7, and has never been re-patched tp make it less unstable on those OS platforms.

No gamer I know has a copy for that purpose, granted we have partitions for other programs usually.

I have the updated patches for everything.

Your problem is more than likely because you are trying to run it on a notebook.  Notebooks + Gaming = Bad experience.

I've been having the problem with crashes in both Dragon Age Origins and Awakening, including the DLC Witch's Hunt since I first installed the game on my desktop that is running Windows 7 64 bit. However I recently updating my video card which has immensely improved the graphics and now the game is crashing every five minutes it seems. My system specs: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz, 4.00 GB Ram. And the video card is Nvidia EVGA GeForce GTS 450. Anyone know what might be causing it or should I just try reinstalling under custom?

@Vladrian

A lot of
people have this problem since Patch 1.03, which is included in the Ultimate
Edition.
It seems that
there is no fix that works for everybody, but I was able to avoid crashes by:

1. Deactivating
bump-mapping-effects in the video options

and

2. Setting
CPU-affinity for DA:O to two cores as follows:

Start DA:O

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager

Click on the Processes tab

Right click the process DAOriginsLauncher

Click Set Affinity

Check the CPU(s) that you want it to run on and click OK

Some have
reported that changing only the CPU-affinity was effective, but that wasn't
enough for my game. I hope it helps, but I can't guarantee it.
