Denerim is overrun. You're told you can take no more than three companions with you into the city, to do what needs to be done. What choices did you make, and why?
My PC was a dual-wielding rogue, with ranger and duelist specializations, emphasis on ranger. By this time, he can summon regular versions of the wolf, bear, and spider. Good for keeping the enemy busy while my PC either goes into stealth for a back-stab, picks away via longbow, or - as I discovered is possible, with stealth maxed out - sneaks up, tosses a soulrot bomb at a cluster of unsuspecting enemies, and, without de-stealthing, sneaks away again.
I also brough Alistair, because Riordan recommended him (which I thought important for plot reasons), and because I needed a warrior along to complement my rogue PC.
Then I selected Leliana, because her fully-developed archer abilities, plus lock-picking and trap detection, would I thought be extremely helpful. Plus her bardic abilities are always welcome.
Lastly, Morrigan, also for plot reasons, but also in order to have a mage along: with Sleep + Waking Nightmare, and Blizzard, her crowd-control abilities had become quite... helpful, to say the least.
I considered taking Shale, mainly for the support abilities only Shale can provide, but thought these less important in the end than the abilities my chosen companions could contribute. I regretted not being able to take Wynne along, because her ability to heal and revive are always extremly helpful, as well as her Crushing Prison. But by this time I had made use of Morrigan's potion-making abilities and came well-supplied with healing poultices and lyrium potions. Zevran I did not consider bringing, although I liked him by the end. I just didn't think that given a choice of three, his skills would outweigh those of the others.
In the end, my small band did quite well. My PC was able to clear out several areas overrun by darkspawn almost single-handedly, by entering in stealth, and picking off enemies one by one with his longbow, or by using the stealth-bomber technique mentioned above.
The key in most areas is keeping genlock emissaries and alphas under control. They can be troublesome. And the archdemon? Well, keep your party separated; make good use of ranged attacks; if you have a spellcaster with the ability to freeze enemies, that can provide a brief respite, even against the archdemon. And make use of allies. I found I could handle almost all areas without calling in the allies (dwarves, humans, elves, mages), which meant they were available for the rooftop. When we emerged under the open sky, befouled by the archdemon's stench, I called the elven archers to assist us. They did a fair job keeping the archdemon occupied while my band did its thing, although Leliana seemed for some reason to be singled out by the archdemon for its attacks.
I do have a question... there are a couple of ballistae emplaced on the rooftop. I experimented with them, but couldn't tell whether they were actually doing any damage - either to the archdemon, or to any other of the enemy's forces.
Anyway, this is how the end played out for me, in brief. Having played through all the Baldur's Gate and NWN titles, I found this to be an extremely satisfying experience. Great story, plot, and character development. Well done!
Which Companions Did You Bring for the Final Battle(s)?

Spirit Balms (and Corruption and other such gear) are more important than which characters you bring IMO. There are 89 million different ways to win that battle...I think the AD is actually only the third hardest dragon battle in the game if you use all the tools you have by then.
The ballistae are the "easy button" -- just make sure to bring a rogue with Deft Hands and DO NOT stand in front of them when "using" them to fire. (Should be a warning sticker on the ballistae similar to "do not point laser beam at remaining eye"....) If you've convinced Kardol to bring the Legion of the Dead and you use the Dwarves, I think Kardol and the ballistae alone could take out the Archdemon with hardly any potion usage.
I've taken different companions depending on the strengths of my PC and what else I was trying to accomplish, but I always end up bringing a rogue (as noted above) and Alistair or Loghain. PC avatar to the left is almost to the Landsmeet (level 21 already) and will be fighting the AD twice: Once for the Ultimate Sacrifice ending and a second time taking Morrigan's "out" so that I can keep my PC for Awakening. Yep, meta-gaming...
Having Wynne (or another SH with Revival) is definitely helpful several times in that entire sequence through the fort and on the rooftop.

Thanks for the good ideas, Flagondotcom! You're right about the Spirit Balms (etc.): here I was thinking I'd be good to go with my Wade's Drake & Dragon armor, with ultimate fire resistance (both my PC and Leliana were so equipped; could have had Alistair equipped in the dragonbone version, had I thought to switch it from Sten to him beforehand; as it was, Alistair was in the Juggernaut armor, so I guess he was alright). I mean, we're thinking "dragon," right? But the spirit attacks were relentless - I guess that makes sense, coming from an AD, right? guess the 'dragon' was simply the 'shell' assumed by the foul fiend.

I enjoy that final battle. It always 'feels' cinematic to me.
For my last attempt I had
1. PC Warden - Arcane Warrior / Party Healer
2. Loghain - Tank - Sooo ... do you still think that this isn't a true blight? Really?
3. Oghren - Damage - TH is nasty vs boss types & there are pleny on the way up.
4. Leliana - Range Support and romance - just wouldn't have felt right without her
I'll agree with flagondotcom that having Wynne can be helpful for that final battle. I very nearly had her come. But I also wanted to leave the gates well guarded & that factored into my thinking as well. Sten was an obvious choice to leave in charge, Zev for DPS, and Shale for tanking ... but they needed a mage and Morrigan was gone by this time in that particular playthrough....

I'm about to head off to the last battle (cue Europe's "Final Countdown").
I did not accept Morrigan's offer and I forced Alistair to marry Anora.
Final party is Aribeth (mage Warden), Loghain, Lelianna and Shale. Should do okay. No golems, but the Legion of the Dead will show. Other final armies are elves, mages and Redcliffe.
I usually strip any companion before they leave. This time I let Morrigan keep her upgraded robes and Alistair is wearing Cailan's armour and wielding Maric's blade with Duncan's shield. Aribeth will be my Awakenings mage so I'm hoping (against all probability) that Alistair will be wearing what he was last equipped with. He looks really good in Cailan's.
I'm also heading off with more than 1k gold, which is by far the wealthiest character I've ever had.

The only one I remember was my most recent;
Had Anora+Alistair.
PC: BM+Warrior
Sten
Morrigan
Alistair
It took a while to beat it. I was a retard and had the Templars fighting, it was so annoying they would keep dispelling my mage buffs and stuff. i.i

I think the funner ones I did was
my Warden Rogue Archer, Ranger/Bard
Sten Champion.
Oghren Bezerker/Reaver
and Alistair Templar/Champion.
vs the AD Brought in the Golems first, when they went down brought in the Templars, after they went down in came the Dwarves came in to mop up.
I had killed Wynne, Morrigan left after I declined. Shale was dead in the Anvil. Was quite fun the fight at the gates with Leliana running things, with Dog and Zev at her side.

Wow. Guess I was lucky when I won the last battle. I had no strategy and ended up guessing at using the ballista. I had my character (rogue), Allister, Zev, and Lelianna.

Well I used my Mage of arcane warrior arts. Morrigan. Lelianna. and Allister. I believed useing the Ballista was commmon knowledge. Why not equip your best armors and weapons? I sure did and needed no healig magic at all on nornal or hard and beat it first try without death. useing only my health poultics to back me. a battle to remember... i didnt even use my back up forces i forgot they were even there. lol
On my fifth game now and this time around im looking to get achievment first time i was just in it for story.
Good lck man. no need for spirit healers just pure strategy!
Take everything and give nothing back

nice question.
Main character = Dalish elf rogue archer - Ranger+Bard
This is always my chosen way to play. Bear/Spider make good backup while my archer stands back.
Morrigan - blizzard and curse of mortality are very helpful at this stage for doing continuous damage to archdemon.
Wynne - to keep all my party in good health, stonefist is good too.
Alistair - Taunt keeps archdemons attacks focused on him while my 3 other members stand well back.
I called on the Men of redcliffe to help out, they were ok but archdemon was able to take a lot of them out very quickly.
2nd part where darkspawn comes - i take my 3 members to one of the higher platforms and use Alistair and my Spider/Bear to keep darkspawn at bay.
This is normally my chosen party for the harder quests and it never fails, i find having 2 mages very useful as morrigan does large amounts of damage and having a healer means more resources for potions and bombs.

I had PC as Mage (me).... Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana.
When AD was down to 50% health i called in the dwarves who helped to win the battle.
I found it easier than my first attempt...which is not surprising because you know what to expect and can adjust very quickly. Also having Group heal and Revival with Mage boosts your chances very much.
I also use walking nightmare for the darkspawn...thet makes them turn on each other...lol.
I had Redcliffe army, and the dalish and mages to use but never needed them.

PC DW Warrior Templar/Champion (the PC at left here)
Alistair (Fellow warden and fiance and kick ass tank)
Wynne (healing/CC)
Zevran (kick ass DPS)
for troops, I use the dwarves/Legion. They are SO cute, like little mini sherman tanks mowing over everything on the rooftop! YAY dwarves!

Alistair + Shale to hold aggro,
Zevren to dps his heart out, and
my Warden as an arcane warrior/spirit healer...
It was pretty cut & dry. Had no strategy going in, found the ballistas and said I am SO using those. Well worth it. I used the dwarf army for the AD too. It was amusing, though I don't know how helpful it was..

PC: rogue range/assassin full archer spec'ed level 22
Morrigan
Shale
Oghren
This was my party for Orzammar, Forest, many side-quests, Landsmeet, and all of the final battles...
Never used any of the treaty armies, all that work for nothing, really .. For the archdemon, I called in only the golems. Legion of the dead came to the show, but I had no control over them.....

I have finished the game 2 times on the PC, once on the PS3. I'm now on my 4th play thru on the PC. In my last play thru (my favorite) I brought:
Kallian (pictured) --> my City Elf DW Rogue/Assassin/Dualist
Alistair --> Templar/Warrior/Champion
Morrigan --> Mage/Arcane Warrior
Wynne --> Mage/Spirit healer/Arcane Warrior
Kallian pretty much soloed the whole final battle, where my party jumped in when needed. For the Arch Demon, my mages used cone of cold, paralyze, affliction hex as well as mana clash. Initially, Kallian and Alistair used freeze, acid and soulrot bombs, then ranged attacks. While the AD was frozen, Kallian would go in for some DW damage. Alistair also hit the AD with holy smite. Finally, I called in the golems and had Kallian deal more DW attacks, which finished off the AD. Kallian then jumped on the AD neck and dealt the final blows, pretty cool (have a couple of screenshots)
Cheers!
