In a number of posts I've seen comments about e.g. heavy warp does some damage to shields, incinerate does some damage to shields or barriers, etc. However, when I play an enemy that is shielded can't be targeted directly by warp or incinerate, contrariwise an armored enemy can't be targeted by overload etc.
Are other posters correct that damage is caused to a "different" protection type (to shields with warp or whatever) but you have to do so by e.g. hitting a neighbouring (valid target) enemy within the area of effect to do incidental damage? Or is my inability to target with the "wrong" power something to do with difficulty (playing on insanity) or playing on PC or are they wrong or...?
I'm curious mostly for character design/roleplaying reasons - e.g. for an adept I took the energy drain bonus power to have a character that could damage everyone/everything easily without a weapon, if other powers do work against shields I could do advanced training to take something different/more fun. Or on another playthrough with a different class it would also affect what power/bonus power was trained/taken.
Q. re Damage/Armor Types and Targeting (e.g. Does Warp Damage Shields?)

Many powers, even if marked by the "red arrow of denial" when targeted by the non-specific target type, can still be launched at them, and will usually do *some* degree of damage, though not neary as much as if they were launched agaist the defense type they were designed for.

on end game insanity, as an assault Sentinel with no power % bonuses, i can tell you that warp takes off half of a blue bar on your average enemy. They also track enemies fine even if the box is all red out. On a purple bar on a regular collector will be taken off immediately from warp.
All powers do damage to defenses (except ammo powers).
On the top of this forum, there is a sticky that shows whats more effective against what.
Its up to you if you don't want to use Energy Drain. I can totally understand you taking another power.

There are many talents that can be used, even if they are "redded". Warp and Incinerate are two of them. I used Warp against shields all the time and it did relatively good damage.

Warp does damage shields... just not as much as it damages health, armor, and barrier.

Warp will only be 50% as effective against shields as it is against armor; Incinerate is not quite 42% as good against shields or barriers as it is against armor.

AI hacking and other tech does.

I... Never said Incinerate got a 1.5x multiplier against shields. In fact, I have no idea what you're getting on about with that at all.

Thanks to all for your replies, I had never used a "redded out" power before, but incinerate is still pretty effective against shields (so far).
I'm trying an infiltrator with dominate (so incinerate, or weapons, will be the only means of stripping defenses before using AI hacking or dominate on those enemies not killed by the sniper rifle). So far (just did Mordin's recruitment) it seems to be working well.

42% being 1/2.4, 2.4 being Incinerate's multiplier against armor.
