I have been thinking about the dark energy references in the game for a while now and I believe that I can make some intelligent observations. First, Veetor mentions dark energy in connection with the Collectors. As the Collectors are pawns of the Reapers, the first link is established to them. When you recruit Tali, she is investigating the early death of the Haestrom star. She also mentions concerns regarding dark energy and its acceleration of the age of the star. Since the Haestrom star is located in Geth controlled space, this is the second tie to the Reapers since the Geth heretics are also their willing pawns. Therefore, I feel comfortable in assigning dark energy anomalies to the Reapers. Because Noveria has also noticed dark energy anomalies, as expressed by Parasini on Illium, we can also surmise that the Reapers have expanded their dark energy work within the Milky Way.
Looking back on the event within ME2 and ME1, we can also make another assumption about the reapers. Sovereign and Harbinger are not the only Reapers active within the Milky Way. While it is true that Sovereign was destroyed at the battle of the Citadel decreasing their numbers, I think that there are a minimum of two left within the Milky Way. Harbinger was running the genetic and ascension programs at the galactic core and dealing with Shepard. I believe that another Reaper is running the dark energy project at another location that is equally inaccessible. Hard proof within the game to make this assumption? No, but it is still logical. If Sovereign was assigned as the Vanguard and Harbinger was assigned as the genetic and ascension specialist, it would be sensible to assign a third to the dark energy projects. Otherwise, Sovereign could have run it all by itself and this was certainly not the case in the game.
That leaves us with the question, what are the Reapers doing with dark energy? I admit that there is nothing within the game to suggest the following extrapolation, however further research in astronomy and astrophysics suggests a possibility. The Haestrom star is being prematurely aged in order to provide resources for future races. First, element zero originates from stars that go nova or supernova. If you google nova you will find that a nova emits about 1/30of a supernova and about 1/200 of a Red Giant. This means that the Red Giant is more effective at spreading element zero than is a nova or supernova. This is why I believe that Haestrom is being prematurely aged.
Further, we know that the Reapers harvest all sentient life in the galaxy that is space faring and leave behind no clues as to those who came before or their fate. Only the mass relays and the Citadel remain in order to guide the next races down the preferred technological path until they are ripe for harvesting. This means that the Reapers must seed life in order to insure that there is a new species coming up approximately each 75,000 years give or take. This “farming” would also be the likely responsibility of the Reaper assigned to the dark energy projects rounding out its responsibilities.
That the Reapers would seed life in the galaxy to insure a constant supply of sentient races goes without saying given their mastery of genetics. The repurposed Protheans and the Keepers are evidence of this. Given that their perception of time is not the same as ours because they live for millions of years or more (the Reaper corpse that was boarded to obtain the IFF was there for about 37 million years and it is unknown what its age was when it was mortally wounded). Such corners of the galaxy would need resources and element zero for development along the predetermined technological path. If these resources were not supplied, then the races would stagnate at their current level of technology.
What is disconcerting is that in two years, Harbinger was able to construct a completely new Reaper using human DNA. As the mass relays also use dark energy to negate gravity (mass effect fields render bodies near weightless per the codex) and the Citadel has been cut off to their reinforcements, how likely is it that a new mass accelerator is being constructed to bypass the Citadel and initiate the harvesting of all space faring species? Just as the heretic Geth constructed their headquarters in between the stars where it was highly unlikely anyone would come, it is likely that this is where the new relay would be constructed for similar reasons.
Something tells me that in ME3 we are going to be up against the wall with the Reapers bearing down on us. Depending on where the Reapers re-enter the Milky Way, somebody is going to have a really bad day. I expect that we will hit the ground running in ME3. Hmmm...I wonder what the Volus billionaire found.
