Nah, my DA:O characters won't even update properly. Even if wanted to change it, I couldn't. Would take a month, maybe.Celrath wrote...

you would think it would be simple enough to implement in to the forum itself.
Must be a pet-peeve of theirs or something. I've only seen a select few people who've somehow managed to use supposedly custom avatars. They've always struck me as the ones who've contributed quite a lot to the community, though. Maybe it's just something special?

My best guess on why user made avatars aren't used is because it requires more moderation and server resources. Some people will try to upload inappropriate avatars, others won't read the instructions and try to upload avys that are too big, and so on. I'm sure Bioware wants to promote their games by having you use Bioware game-related avys, too.
It's not that big of a deal--on a few of the forums I visit, avatars aren't even allowed at all. We're more than that display of a few pixels on the left side of our posts, after all.

The DAO uploader loads images that are stored on your machine and load them up to the server.amrose2 wrote...

It's a matter of tricking the uploader to load up the "wrong" file. 'nuff said.

The boards weren't designed to support custom avatars (other than uploaded player characters) but the team working on the Dragon Age uploading functionality was kind enough to forget to implement an uploading method which would have been more difficult to trick.
The reason for the absence of custom avatars in general is to prevent the boards get flooded by inappropriate content and/or animateg gifs which would strain the system even more than it is now.
ME2 users are no less 'special' than DA:O users are, they only have access to a feature which - unintentionally - makes it possible to work around the site design.
