"Are you a baker? Because youve got a nice pair of sodding buns"
* Oghren: (Sigh)
* Leliana: Is something the matter? Are you... are you thinking about Branka?
* Oghren: Branka--?
* Leliana: You loved her, didn't you? I've seen you, some nights, staring off into the distance with such sadness in your eyes. You wonder if you did something that drove her away; you wonder if she would have stayed if you had done things differently. She must have loved you, somewhere inside...
* Oghren: That sodding great dew-licker had a heart clad in iron. She only had one love—the Anvil. and later, the Anvil. Only sighed because I was gassy, and finally let off a good one. (Inhales) Should be hitting you right about now. (Laughs) Silent killer, eh?
* Leliana: (Coughs)
Ill be quite happy with Oghren in my party, id of preferred others but "he'll do"

The problem is that is a personal opinion. You see a hilarious dialogue and laugh at it. I see a bad joke and just roll my eyes and sigh, humor is funny like that.Erucolindo wrote...
-Wynne: I'm flattered..
-Oggy: Well I don't have the equipment for that, but whatever gets you ready..
That's not an exact quote, but it's an example of the kind of hilarious dialogue you get from him. His personal quest was great.
I don't hate him (it's character in a videogame for pete's sake; hating him would be somewhat silly), it's just that he shares the same roll as for instance the Black Whirlwind from Jade Empire; comic relief and I didn't think his jokes or his burping was funny. An unfunny comic relief character quickly becomes annoying.
It also doesn't help that in a setting that already has a lot of fantasy clichés they dumped the dwarven archetype of axe-swinging and beer-swilling on to the dwarf you'll spent the most time with. I can only think of one moment (more like one sentence) where Ogrhen becomes an actual character and not a stereotype.
I don't know, maybe BioWare put some actual effort into Ogren this time (instead of using tvtropes as a resource); we'll see.

I find it hilarious that the same guy voices both Oghren and Gorim. They sound so different, it's amazing.
Oghren isn't meant to be a witty sort of funny. That's just not how he is. He's about as subtle as a hammer to the face. It's just part of his personality. He's very much a product of his society, up bringing, and caste. I understand that some people may not find him amusing, but I do. Then again, I'm easily amused.
I haven't gotten the drunk conversations yet. I need to talk to Oghren more. Which is funny, since he's usually in my party constantly towards the end. I so want to write a scene with him getting my innocent mage PC drunk.
Well I can appreciate that..some folks like the "pull my finger" brand of joking...I just don't hehe. Again I will say I wish they had done something more original with "Oggie".
Come on Feraele he is dwarf that what they do. didn't you watch lord of the rings gimli and legolas always going head to head about the number of enemy they killed. dwarf like they fighting, drinking and women.

I thought he was really funny as well. I don't think it's that people hate him, it's that they think they are better choices if you could only have 1 companion.(Morrigan or Alistair especially)
He's a good character, but doesn't really add much to the story and he doesn't seem as fleshed out as the other characters(more of a comic relief char). Apparently he'll have more depth this time around.
How is a King and a Pregnant Chick a better choice then a Dwarf who needs more character development? >.>
"I SHOULD BE LEADING FERELDEN RIGHT NOW, BUT THE FEMALE FANBASE DEMANDS MY COUNTRY DIE SO I CAN TANK FOR THEM"
"I'M PREGNANT, AND ANGRY, AND I'M NOT WEARING THAT SKIMPY ROBE ANYMORE, **** OFF, LEAVE ME BE, OR I'LL KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU, WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD ****ING IDEA?"
Anyways, I was hesitent of Oghren coming back, but well, he has a kid now, and every trailer makes it look like he sobered up, considering he wasn't drinking because he was a Dwarf, but because his wife kind of dumped him, went insane, started sacrificing people, and created a Broodmother, well ****, I'd drink myself into oblivion to, and hell if I tried to be a commited normal person.

Plus yes part of it is the fact I want Leliana back, the fact she isn't around makes a bit of a mockery of my Origins ending when in all honestly you would have had to cut her head off to keep her from my side.
Though I understand that everybody has their favourites and they were never going to be able to bring them all back, as long as I don't have to use Ogren at any point i'll be happy.

"You humans are all racist!"
Besides I am fine with Oghren coming back, as a comic relief I thought Zevran and Sten were better because they all were developed more (and their characters were much more serious). Besides some of Oghren's antics didn't seem to fit well with the other cast of characters. The sequence if you play as a female and hit on him is hilarious though.

Personally, I've never had much use for him, getting him late and all that, but I made a play-through getting him early and taking him with me a lot. After that, I liked him much better, especially after the gauntlet and the fade. My PC talked a lot to him, and she really felt bad for him and his suffering. Yes, if he is talked to and allowed to make his comments, it shows that he truly is feeling bad. His "hornet" speech is endearing to my PC

Could the Black Whirlwind fit into the Dragon Age universe?
no way. Black Whirllwind is super-awesome, not to say that Oghren isn't, idk, they're just different.

Everyone and their mother got really hyped about their favorite character. When you're promising something to your consumers, you never set the expectaions too high. The higher the hype, the higher the dissapointment. It's a basic marketing rule. Bioware made that mistake. The announcement of Oghren got people going:
"Wait, why Oghren? I hate him. i want Leliana/Alistair... "
So, in the end they managed to make a large portion of their fanbase to dislike Oghren for no real reason.

Leliana makes no sense?scruffyryan wrote...
Leliana and morrigan wouldnt make sense so much if you're playing the new warden commander given their endings Wynne barely seemed to manage this kind of adventure 5 years ago, the dog seems obvious, Sten's ending doesnt really make for much of a return, Zevram was pretty attached to your old char, alistair seems to be king in the videos....Oghren is pretty much the only one who doesnt seem intrinsically tied to your old char or out of the country.
Why does the epilogue say that she returns with my PC to the Grey Wardens to help rebuild the order?
Why won't she then be there with my PC?
You are right with Morrigan, Wynne, Shale and Sten. They leave.
But Leliana, Zevran and Alistair (who can be your husband) really should have been taken over - next to Oghren.

1. Leliana was discarded in favour of Oghren.
2. Oghren was, in the innitial stages, referred to as the "old favourite".
Who's favourite? It can't possibly be from the forum as I have seen a much bigger following for Leliana and Alistair.
My current concern is in which way the (Leliana) romance is aknowledged in Awakening, and I intend to ask people after release to get some inside information without spoilers.

IMHO Zev & Leliana probably would have been the best ones to bring back since there are so many endings where they "help you rebuild the wardens" ... which seems to be a theme of Awakenings ... and since their orginal romances had less connection to the "core story" of DA:O than Alistair or Morrigan it would have been nice to see them given time to shine in Awakenings.
Loghain also would have been very interesting to see as a returning companion. You REALLY don't get to see much of him in game and if you go through the trouble to get him and have him live it would have been cool for there to be a payoff in Awakening.
Pretty much any of the others except for Shale (DLC & she has stuff to do), Wynne (old & has stuff to do if she lives), Sten (went home if he lives), or Morrigan (she's busy guys, ask any new mother - or she really doesn't want to see you again) would have made sense. Dog would probably have been the most difficult to do though since he requires both specialized equipment and talents ... and Alistar might not have been easy either given how many different outcomes his story can have.
I suspect that Oggy was chosen because
a) He's cheap to do
c) He doesn't have a huge number of DA:O endings that would preclude him from helping
d) The dev's probably overestimated how much players like him since "he's funny."

What I don't understand is why isn't the Mabari in teh game. I Know I've complained a lot about this, but I'm not the type to shut up to stuff I don't like. I know they can't improt all the charatchers like, that wouldn't be good, my Zevran told me he was going in adventura with me, but I understand if he doesn't appear, I'm not the nice type of person anyway, but my Mabari... like it's my "dog", he was the only one that never annoyed me in anything.

Bioware's announcement is what stirred up all the hatred. They stated that "an old favorite" is returning and that's what killed Oghren IMO.

That is because for the MAJORITY of players Ogrhen woudl not be in their top3 favorite characters - and also none of his endings suggest that he would be coming back (versus other characters who almost always say they want to continue traveling with you...The only Fan fav that would have been unrealistic to expect would have been morrigan

I bet no romancing was decided on first, which left you with Wynne, Oghren, or Sten. Out of those three I would choose Oghren.
No romances where implemented because this is an expansion, they do not have the budget an actual sequel would, and the dialog alone would probably break whatever budget they had. And Alistar looks to be taking his role as King, so that axes him from the party (If he survived your story, in other case I'm guessing Anora would take his place). Sten leaves for his homeland, and Wynne is on borrowed time, so Oghren also makes the most sense in this case. Also, I'm with you on he's the best out of those 3.
