Why all the hate for Oggy?

If, in Awakening, Oghren is a main character similar to Alistair in Origins, I'll spend my money elsewhere. We all get to vote with our wallets.

I'm not using Oggy or the chick warrior ever in this game. Midgets smell funny and women can't fight. Period. Women make mages and rogues for me. So I have no idea who is going to be my fighter other than my main character. From the lack of characters it looks like I have no choice but to use two mages as it is.
Madness. They should be in the kitchen.
Go make me a sandwich already.
(Yes, I am female. And yes, turnabout is fair play.)
And mages and rogues can fight. If they couldn't, they wouldn't be in your party. So I guess women can fight after all. /sarcasm

But still I'd much rather have nearly anyone else. Not having Dog return is nearly unforgivable. And nonsensical.
Sigh... people including the devs have already explained why dog isn't returning and their reasons are sound... it's not nonsensical, you just really really want him back. I can understand.
A. Dog can easily die in DA:O, sense he isn't easy to implant *see below* putting time and effort into a character players may not even SEE isn't worth it.
B. Dog is not easy to implant. He is very tricky to bring alive, and relys very very heavily upon party interaction to come alive. What appears to be the easiest companion to create may actually be the hardest.
C. Dog needs his own unique new skills to account for the new levels. Thats allot of new skills to create and balance and christ, how much can a dog do?
Puhleeze. There is absolutely nothing going on with Dog that's not also going on with Oghren. Or any other character. Get serious. Its not like Oghren doesnt move or animate. I remember Oghren doing quite a bit of custom 'oghren time' moments.
Heck even the camera angles are nearly the same on the two of them.
Skillwise not a big deal. Dog got skills at a much slower rate than other characters. It would be 2-4 skills tops, and they could be exceptionally lazy and just make them all passive buffs. (Damage, armor, whatever)

As for him being forced, he's only forced on you for a relatively small part of the game. You don't have to take him through the majority of the deep roads, cause after you talk with him at the entrance, it pops up the party selection screen, and he isn't greyed there. You can switch him out.
Second, while mainly done for humor sake, Oggy's anti-social behavior is the result of being an outcast and a laughing stock among is own people. When Branka ditched him, he became the butt of jokes, and at some point he prolly just stopped caring about what other people thought about him and just acted how he wanted to. I'm not saying he was perfect before, it's just that being an outcast exaggerates socially unacceptable behaviors sometimes.
Also, his drunkeness and axe usage are not stereotypical dwarf behaviors. From the Hobbit, the dwarves were kind of gutless cowards, always sending Bilbo in first. Their vice isn't drink, but greed. Greed for gems and precious metals, not drink. It's the Elves from Middle Earth who prolly drink a lot and party.
As for the two handed thing, I agree. I've given him a two handed sword that was better then his two handed axe, and let him use that. Awakenings will allow you to go buy a book, respec him or anyone else, and make them to your liking. Wish they would have allowed that in DA.

That's the only amusing thing he has ever said. I guess it's because it doesn't involve alcohol, body functions and getting it on with anyone in a skirt.Timortis wrote...
Whether it's an overreaction or not depends on how annoying the player finds Oghren and his "funny" lines such as "shave my back and call me an elf". I didn't like him and I didn't like being forced to take him with me, and I didn't like being forced to do the final map of the Anvil of the Void with him.
He reminds me of a relative. A very enhanced version of a relative. I wouldn't go anywhere with that man ever again. Same goes for Oghren. There are other melee combatants to use.

There's good reasons for that, not least that he's a late entry in an already-crowded category (warriors, of which he can be anything from the 2nd to the 5th, and that's not counting the PC!) sharing the 2H "niche" with a character you get much earlier...Oronduil wrote...
I think that quite a few people who aren't happy with Oghren returning never actually used him outside of the "Paragon of her Kind" quest.

As much as I think about it, hes the only char really that could be expanded even further, apart from Zevran or Sten, everybody else you pretty much know everything and the game wraps it all up.

In the case of the sequel, I would probably just take a pass and not buy the book. After all, a major part of what I like about the story is missing - the characters. Bio has done the same thing with this xpac - made a great story and developed interesting characters in the original, then just dumped them all but one. Then, they've given us a really short story in the xpac with much less time to develop the new characters.
Had they kept more of the original party members, they could have focused more on the story and just continued to develop NPCs we already knew and liked. So, its not so much that I hated Oghren, its just that I cared about others more and they're - just gone.

When Oghren walks up to you first time you try to leave for Caridin's Cross, none of the dialog options allow you to tell him to get lost and he's forcefully added to your camp. Then, during the Anvil of the Void, when you first meet Branka, he's forcefully added to your party, and you can't remove him until a new king is crowned. It's reaaaaaaly really annoying.
Oh lord, I hated that bit. You really should have the option to just tell him to bugger off at that point - my personal opinion of him aside (which is actually mildly positive, I like the guy but not that much), it was really annoying to be knocked off my game for that bit. I had a settled party with really tightly-set tactics (I almost never had to pause or micromanage, even at higher difficulties) and in walks this poorly-equipped buffoon who has no clue about how to fight with the party. Really irritating.

I mean just try and imagine, for example, how different Baldur's Gate II would have been if characters like Jaheria, Minsc and Viconia had been left out and the only one returning was someone like Yeslick because of his relative lack of "screen time".
I should add that I actually like Oghren myself - it's just that this argument (which is in the official Q&A, mind you) strikes me as odd.

At the end of the game when everyone gives you their speech before you set out after the archdemon, if you have enough approval (90+ I think) oghrens speech is pretty damn good. I actually found that Oghrens "goodbye" speech is the most heartmoving of all the companions in the game, even leliana/morrigans if you're romancing them.
In short, theres more to Oghren then lewd jokes and belching if you give him the chance.

There are reasons why Alistair/Morrigan/Sten can't come back, and Wynne is kind of old.
But Zevran, Leiliana or Dog would have made a lot of sense. (Dog in particular, what else is he going to do? He's bonded to you. He should be there.)
Now, granted, Dog isn't a favorite either, but Zevran and Leiliana have a ton of fans.
I don't really care, but Oghren, while I don't dislike him, was never one of my favorites.
